Marcus Davis Will Transfer
After being arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and driving while intoxicated, Marcus Davis has decided to transfer from the University of Texas. He had been suspended since his arrest.
The Longhorns aren't suffering from a lack of depth at defensive back and will lose only Deon Beasley, who did not play much this season. However, Earl Thomas could turn pro and both Browns will graduate after next season, along with the possibility that Aaron Williams could leave early. The loss of Davis will likely be felt the most when Williams leaves, as Davis was the likely candidate to replace AW at the nickel back position, crucial to the Texas defense as they face spread offenses every week. The Longhorns will now have to find a new replacement for Williams.
Davis' transfer is helpful in that it opens up a scholarship, potential letting the Longhorns add another player to the 2010 class, with the two main possibilities being Dallas Episcopal defensive end/defensive tackle Eric Humphrey or Lancaster's Tyler Stephenson, a talented and speedy corner committed to Baylor who recently called Duane Akina expressing his interest in the Texas program.
In other news, sophomore defensive end Russell Carter is ineligible for the game after bombing a final. Carter was not expected to play in the national championship game.

Took it down
I will add a note on Carter being ineligible.

wonder if he was pushed outta the program… he’s a talented young man, don’t think it’d be a depth issue.

Earl's definitely gone
All the new mock draft boards I’ve seen has him way up in the safety spot. He’s looking at first round money for sure, everyone’s that high on him now.
In-VINCE-able.
Mock draft boards aren't any indication right now
Lots of them still have Trent Williams as a top pick, in fact. Most of them are done by one or a couple of amateurs who don’t have nearly enough man-hours to get a good look at enough players to put together a reasonable mock draft. It takes a lot of man-hours from guys with good knowledge to put together anything that resembles reality. All we’re seeing are sites that catch a game or two, echo/ripoff each other, and make guesses.
I miss Joel Buschbaum, dammit. As for Earl, he’s 5’9" and unlikely to go in the top 15 picks, IMO. He could possibly go pro, but I don’t think it’s in the cards this year.

Unfortunately, speaking with his family at the Big XII championship
I get the sense if he is graded anywhere in the first round he’s gone. His game IQ is only matched in his physical upside. The kid was born to play football.

That's true
However, the market for 5’9" safeties isn’t very big. I do hope the kid goes early in whatever draft he enters, and gets lots of money, but I fear the height issue will limit him. Ed Reed was considered short, and he’s about 5’11".

What kind of career has Ed Reed had?

My point was that Earl is up to two inches shorter than a guy who went late-1st

I understand your point
But statistically he is on par with the guy that one the Thorpe award.

Absolutely. IIRC, he's actually better statistically, in fact.
But college statistics have only a loose correlation with NFL draft position.

Sorry for the typo
Well, if you’re looking at paper, you got to draft Mays

I just have a hard time seeing him at safety in the NFL
Fuller of aTm was 6-4 and it was no contest on at least one jump ball.

I don't like Mays
But he’s big, fast, and strong. He’s the type of guy who will look better in workouts and measurements, while Earl actually looks better at, y’know, playing football.
My guess is that Mays ends up enjoying the typical “workout warrior” bump in the draft, while if Earl goes for 2010, he suffers a little from the ridiculously short memory of some scouts.

Does this surprise you?
Berry is quite impressive.

Bad news
The kids is a great potential talent. But, the offense was pretty bad. Hopefully he can get things in order and still have a good career. I wish him luck.
GoBR, you heard Adrian White's gonna be a Longhorn?
That’s what I’ve heard from reliable sources, but obviously not gonna put a fanpost up about it.
What I have heard
is that he and his family haven’t told anyone about their decision — he hasn’t even spoken with any of the coaching staffs to let them know. Not sure if some information got out, but if you are indeed talking about White that would run contrary to what other people are saying. Right now I would put the money on Oklahoma State because of the potential for early playing time.

Yeah, I was talkin' D. White.....had heard abut the early playing time comment, but
also that he was gonna be a Longhorn per family member. I don’t personally know a family member, but have a buddy close to the situation. Why in the hell Okie Lite? Early playing time, smearly playing time!

Demarco Cobbs
will this push him to the defensive side of the ball now with the voids potentially being created or what are the other options?
The talk right now
is that Cobbs will not be playing wide receiver, but in respect to information originating from behind a pay wall, I won’t comment at this time on where he is headed, but it’s a bit of a surprise.

The talk right now
is that Eric Humphrey will commit to Tech if Ruffin McNeil gets the job. http://fantake.com/forums/topic.php?id=568#post-3366
Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.
He Wouldnt Get Job by NSD would he?

OB....
….., on their cover page, is reporting 3 players didn’t make the trip. Then mentioned the M.Davis transfer.
--- All roads to the Big-XII Championship lead through OU/RRS. It's not just another game! We're all about championships here. ---
From MBTF.com
Couple of housekeeping issues, three young men are not here. Jared Norton and Brandon Collins are redshirted. Brandon got a concussion, and Jared Norton is not practicing anyway, so they may come when it comes closer to game time, but they are not out here now. Russell Carter is academically ineligible, so he will not travel. He will be eligible for the spring. Marcus Davis, who has been suspended for the previous two games, has informed us that he will transfer, so he is not out here today. We are not sure where he will transfer, but we will help him in any way that we can.
Bad call.
Idle hands and all.
What if Brandon Collins had gone out with the team?

That's too bad...
He seemed to find his way onto the field more than any of the other freshman DB’s so I’m gonna say that he was possibly the best of the bunch (at this point in their development anyways…) I hope he gets his act together and figures everything out
I thought he looked promising
as a nickel back and was looking forward to seeing him play there. Definitely agree with your sentiments about him getting everything together.

I figured he was gone from UT
I think it’s sad things went the way they did, but UT does have Carrington Bynum from the same class as Davis. Also, the 2010 class features three nice DBs and a couple of athletes who look like DBs.
… I think byndom is a part of the 2010 class. The db’s I can remember from 09 were Davis, Barnett and Vacarro. Feels like I’m forgetting someone.
Damn
For some reason I was thinking Eryon Barnett, but typed Bynum. Ah well, same effect. Barnett could be able to fill the void as well as Davis could’ve, and if not, there are the 2010 guys like, uh, Byndom.

The loss of ANY cornerback is a concern
Can’t have too many of those guys, and we’re looking at Williams, Brown and Brown (if Curtis doesn’t jump to the NFL early) as the only CBs in the program. Maybe Barnett is a corner; not sure. That means 1 or 2 of the incoming freshmen will have to be in the rotation pretty fast.
I gotta think one of the safeties will move to corner this spring.
Move Vacarro to CB/Nickel
Assuming we can keep him out of trouble off the field. That guy needs to get on the field somehow.
Re: Earl
The cg game will probably be the deciding factor of if he goes or not. If he has a great game I don’t see him staying, his stock will be skyrocketing. But if he gets torched, he might stay another year.
In-VINCE-able.
I'm 90% sure his decision will be based solely on how he grades out according to NFL scouts
"I live in the tower with Coach Brown." -Bevo
BTW Good God so many receivers...
…I get this bad feeling (probably completely unjustified?) we might be ignoring other positions of need…?
In-VINCE-able.
Maybe next year's class will have a lot of good DB's?
Texas looks forward and sees which classes are strong at which positions. Then recruits those positions for that year. This year there happens to be a ton of good WR’s in Texas.
I don't think we're ignoring anything.
If you think about it, the Ahmad Dixon recruit had us in the hunt for key DB positions, but I think it would be a mistake to just go out and get antoher one to fill a DB role if the proper fit isn’t there? Next year is strong in DB’s and we have a grip on a handful of great ones. I think the same could be said of O-line. We pick up Espinsosa and Hopkins early and the vibe goes soft with all the late rallying we see now with some notables of Hicks, Jeffcoat, and Darius White.
Re: Stephenson
Evidently he burned some bridges earlier in his recruitment. I wouldn’t count on us having a spot for him.
