InsideTexas Says Muschamp Met With Tennessee This Morning
Refrain from melting down for the time being. Lots of faulty sources out there so far (this one has "historic ties to UT Men's Athletic Department", whatever that means) and even if it's true, it doesn't mean anything. Yet.
Follow the ongoing story at SBNation.
[HT to BMC237]
UPDATE (PB): Howevah, same Inside Texas source (Ross Lucksinger) saying Muschamp turned down TN offer. Interesting to see what's what when this all settles.
UPDATE 9:30 PB: Lucksinger's latest: "Recruits have been contacted and told Muschamp is staying." And with that, we're done updating unless it's from Belmont.
FINAL UPDATE (PB): It's over. Muschamp stays, is happy right where he is. Whoever was sourcing Lucksinger was plain wrong. Hooray for needless scare.

Saw that, also this
Source: Muschamp flew out and met with Tennessee. Two additional sources: Muschamp said ‘no’. Radio station in Knoxville: Tenn, moves on.

If I had to guess, I'd say no.
But if this report is correct, then he’s listening. That could mean any number of things. Plenty of people listen for any number of reasons.
Could this be a case of good manners? Turning them down in person vs. just a trite phone call?

Example
Tennessee is a really good fulcrum to pry filthy lucre out of Dodd’s office.

Many, many people do not
Agents typically do, that’s why people hire them.
I don’t think Muschamp would do something like that to renegotiate a contract he signed within the last month, but if there’s anything to the rumors of 3.5 million per that would be a significant upgrade over UT’s rumored offer of 2.5 million per season when he becomes head coach. There’s enough space between those data points that all parties would want to revisit his salary as head coach when he assumes the role.

That 2.5 mil is just the starting point right now. Muschamp and his agent know that. Once he is closer to taking over, that figure will go WAY up.

‘But we can assume his agent did.’ Not even sure his agent was involved. Too many rumors and assumptions yesterday.

I think Dime was merely referring to his agent having thought of it
Lots of speculation sure, and while speculating, I wouldn’t be surprised if Muschamp was never contacted. His agent, however, is a Tenn. alum who operates out of Memphis and represents some of the highest quality coaches in college football.
If you’re an AD, Sexton is the type of guy you would call to find your bearings. Lots of names could have been tossed around, and lots of numbers.

Agreed that "feeling things out" is to be expected
and it is probably in everyone’s best interest in the long term. Scary for us fans, but not uncommon at all. I’m sure Muschamp and his agent were curious to know what he’s worth on the open market and what Tenn was offering. Texas was probably interested too. After all, Coach Muschamp will be in serious contract negotitations with AD MACK BROWN at some point in the not so distant future and having a baseline of what Tenn. would offer in Jan. 2010 will be a starting point. Can you imagine not taking a job because it only pays $3M a year instead of $2.5? At some point isn’t it the job and school and lifestyle over the money?
It is like Mr. Burns Said

Maybe he just wanted to cover his bases
When he interviewed for the Texas job, he claimed that he had no intention of taking the job but felt that he owed it to himself and his family to at least make the trip and hear what we had to say. By the time he left Austin, he had heard all he needed to hear.
I have to say this is a very odd situation. The Statesman reported earlier today that the sports information office confirmed that Muschamp was in Austin today. And considering the time of the Vols’ presser, it makes me wonder when exactly Muschamp was supposedly in Knoxville meeting with them. The Statesman also reported that the media relations people said they had not been in contact with Mack or Will all day today. The whole lack of communication thing is just very disconcerting.

Look Coach Brown and Coach Boom are very close
I don’t think for one moment Coach Boom did this without checking with Coach Brown first. My guess was he was just testing the waters and listening because sometimes with some opportunities you just have to listen even if there is no real interest.
Please tell me you got that.
True.
He may have friends in the Tenn. ath. department and it was just courtesy.
A friend of mine asked me to interview for a job. I really wasn’t interested in going back to work for someone else, but because of the relationship, I felt like I needed to go through the motions.

How awesome is it that we have a DC and HC-in-waiting in this much demand?
And if he indeed did turn them down, that makes me think this transition may happen sooner rather than later.

I think that is one of the greatest compliments to a program; for your assistants to be in such high demand. Didn’t happen too much under the Fulmer regime.

Keep reading that thread
Others chime in saying he said “no.” The ones saying he agreed provide no proof. The ones saying he said “no” link to the inside texas article we have seen.
I did...
Three of them said that they received texts saying that it’s Muschamp. The ones saying “no” are just recycling the nos from earlier in the day.
I hope they’re full of shit. If so, why no word from Muschamp? It’s likely that he’s negotiating with someone right now, either Texas or Tennessee (or both). Which means that a “no” from earlier in the day could have turned into a “yes” with a sweetened offer.
Tennessee has been thru enough
Why falsely get their hopes up? It’s just mean and someone should apologize for kicking them when they’re down.
It Ain't Easy, But It's Worth It.
Not yet
The offer is 7 yrs @ 3 mil per. No out clause for Texas or UGA. No word on yea or nay.

On the contrary
That smoke hasn’t been accompanied by any flames whatsoever. That is the issue. Our side insists there is nothing to these rumors, and their side insists a deal has already been reached. But they’ve offered no proof at all. This is typical SEC behavior.
Although
I will say that I’m a little disappointed that Muschamp hasn’t released some sort of statement. Whether it’s “I’m not going anywhere. You can all get some sleep now,” or “Nothing has been decided, but I would be foolish not to at least meet with them.” I don’t really care which, but I’m not going to deny that it bothers me that he won’t publicly acknowledge what’s going on. I’m sure he has his reasons, but there is a hell of a lot at stake here, and it would just be nice for someone to start talking. The rumors for the past 24 hours have been about as fantastic as I can remember.

Last night on EDSBS the Kiffin stuff was soo funny
and it got my mind off of the NC. Now this isn’t funny. Please stop the nightmare.
Coach Brown would probably not discourage Muschamp from meeting with them
Kind of like that if you love him let him free and if he stays then you know stuff.
And, he may have even talked to them to help let them know what would be his concerns etc. Maybe even discuss references on some other prospect other than himself.
I just wish UT Media would make a statement before recruits get nervous. They shouldn’ since we know Coach Brown is certainly not going anywhere soon, but this has been crazy.
Probably right about Mack
Before VY it was unheard of for a UT football player to leave school early. Now we have 1 or 2 a year doing so. My guess is that Brown doesn’t try to influence them in any way, just tells them to do whatever they think is best for themselves and their families. His approach with Muschamp would likely then be the same.

I would love to see Leach
wreak havoc in the SEC…he would have better athletes than he had in Lubbock…and would instantly make it tougher for someone to go undefeated out there (just like he’s done in the Big 12).

Rumors continued to swirl late Wednesday about Will Muschamp and whether the Longhorns defensive coordinator and head-coach-in-waiting is jumping to the other UT — Tennessee.
However, when reached for comment, Texas football spokesman John Bianco said Muschamp has not interviewed for the Volunteers job. And Bianco said Muschamp told him Wednesday that he is "happy here and plans on being at Texas for a long time."

A “proven DC” isn’t the solution here. Especially one at an underachieving program like Texas. I think Mack Brown is a fraud, why would I want one of his assistants? Muschamp will not keep up with our biggest rivals.

Does anyone at InsideTexas get any repercussions for printing rumors that were completely false? It is one thing for internet fan boards to have retarded rumors flying around, that is pretty much what happens all of the time, but InsideTexas is affiliated with a “news” organization. Plus, if some of our fellow BONers are correct, this could have had negative repercussions on recruiting, and at least gave Muschamp and the AD’s spokespeople an unnecessary headache to deal with.
