Update: The scoop on what had happened:

"Buckner was visiting a woman at her apartment complex at 614 Holleman Drive East in College Station when the two of them got into an argument and Buckner was asked to leave, Sigler said.

Buckner refused to leave, and neighbors called police to report the disturbance.

The Longhorns receiver refused to get in the police car, Sigler said."

-from the Statesman

Strangely, neither pay site is reporting Buckner's arrest at this time and neither is the Statesman. It's legit though, as the link over at BC connects to the real deal Brazos County jail records. Buckner marks the fourth Longhorn football player arrested since the middle of November -- while it's not a streak as bad as the 2007 summer, it's getting close.

Ken Rucker's move into what basically amounts to a babysitting position on the team was supposed to stop some of this behavior, but this falls on the players -- the coaching staff cannot monitor them every second of every day, particularly in the off season. As a team, all the players must collectively make better decisions and some of that falls on the senior leadership.

When Brian Orakpo and Roy Miller were seniors in 2008, this type of thing wasn't happening because the players all knew better than to cross them. Who fills that void now, especially with leaders like Lamarr Houston and Colt McCoy gone? --GoBR--

College Station should be declared off limits

to UT football players not inside a stadium, bus or team hotel. Only bad things can happen there.

Well

It looks like Buckner is definitely a legit 6-3, if not a little taller when he stands up straight. So at least we have an accurate measurement of his height now…

Between Buckner and Collins it looks like the “What do we do with all these receivers?” question is starting to answer itself. I hate it when this stuff happens.

Probably getting ahead of ourselves with that one

but White definitely looks like Big Roy with the way that their body parts seem to be going in all directions at once. Personally, I don’t think Buckner deserves to wear the number and the coaching staff should make it a point to make players earn the right to wear it. But I might be a little biased about that, as my handle on here might indicate.

As for as punishment for Buckner it’s all speculation until the details emerge, but the charges wouldn’t seem to warrant a quick dismissal like Brandon Collins, though certainly a suspension is no doubt in order.

by Wescott Eberts (GoBR) on Jan 14, 2010 9:43 AM CST up reply actions

I made a post about how this trend was becoming disturbing...

…and this just adds to it. Damnit, Buckner. I’m not ready to convict yet, and I’m really interested to read the details, but this is just dumb. Why even go into College Station?

I’m really hoping this turns out to be an “over-charge.” There are so many ways a criminal trespassing charge could result from something that wasn’t all that big a deal, like maybe being at someone’s house, and then not leaving when told to do so, so the person jumped the gun and called the police. I really hope that’s it, but I get the feeling it isn’t.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 14, 2010 9:40 AM CST reply actions

he’s just a dumbass. on his twitter he talks about living the life of a texas football player and how great it is. if he’s too dumb to realize what he has in front of him, he doesn’t deserve to be on our team. we’ve all done stupid things, but we all haven’t been to jail. just another bad mark on the team’s record.

by Duffs_Delicious_Salsa on Jan 14, 2010 10:10 AM CST up reply actions

Yes

calling him a dumbass is excessively derogatory. Clearly, Buckner made some type of poor decision and then most likely compounded with another poor decision directly thereafter. I haven’t seen his Twitter feed, but he hasn’t had any other incidents or disciplinary problems that would indicate a pattern of behavior.

All conjecture at this point

I was once arrested by a less than stellar cop who trumped up my three beer scenario. It was promptly thrown out and she was reprimanded.

My brother was arrested for DUI and resisting arrest was added.

I was there the entire time. What happened: he had one beer three hours prior, spilled a little on his shirt, and later swerved to miss a dog. Cop saw it, tested him, and arrested him despite the negative test result. When my brother rolled his eyes and turned his head in disgust (he did not otherwise move), the cop cuffed him and told him that he had been resisting arrest as well. All I can say is that my brother walked scot-free once it was all said and done, and for good reason.

Resisting arrest is one of the most abused charges out there, IMO.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 14, 2010 10:03 AM CST up reply actions

This was in Austin

several years ago. I didn’t use a turn signal and was stupid enough to admit my three beers when I was stopped. I failed the field sobriety test (cop’s judgement) because my knees were shaking in the freezing wind and cold then passed the breath test downtown (.03) and they still locked me up for a few hours. I don’t donate anymore to the police fraternity organizations.

star-crossed romance at the core?

The Statesman blog mentions that he was visiting a woman and the address (how many minutes til the press announces who lives there?). He refused to leave when asked then “resisted arrest” by refusing to get into the police car. People do unintelligent things when frustrated (in football and in love, perhaps?).

by KevinJ on Jan 14, 2010 11:55 AM CST reply actions

Wow

So it’s as I predicted: a complete over-charge. What was described will almost certainly not stand up as criminal trespassing, unless local laws are even more effed-up than I could imagine them.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 14, 2010 12:00 PM CST reply actions

What exactly is the definition fo 'criminal' trespass?

Obviously he was in the house legally….

I guess it becomes ‘criminal’ when he wouldn’t leave, but that’s pretty ridiculous. If I’m at my gf’s place and her roommate asks me to leave, am I am criminal now if I don’t leave?

by Jhal2315 on Jan 14, 2010 12:07 PM CST reply actions

IIRC...

I’m no lawyer, but I’d imagine that once 911 is called, the warrant is automatic.

Interesting

So if I don’t like my neighbor I can call 911 and make some complaint and get a warrant for him?

Obviously it won’t stick, but the embarrassment of the arrest would linger.

Seems flawed, but whatever.

by Jhal2315 on Jan 14, 2010 1:27 PM CST up reply actions

Very

I’ll save you the gory details, but the landmark case Lawrence v Texas that overturned the TX sodomy law was all based on a vindictive neighbor that called the police on his gay neighbor and lied to the police by saying a burglary was in progress. The police showed up and when they broke into the gay guy’s house to stop the alleged burglary, well, we will leave it at that what they found. The victims were prosecuted but bravely fought it. Imagine that embarassment.

I never heard if the a-hole neighbor that lied about what was going on was charged with making a false complaint, but I would imagine so.

by Wrangler86 on Jan 14, 2010 4:50 PM CST up reply actions

Nope.

The complainant has to swear the warrant. The 911 call has nothing to do with the CT.

Don’t get me wrong, our entire athletics program is sterling, but at the end of the day when you think Texas (the school, the state) you think football. This leads to publicity, pressure, and ego…none of which are helped by the fact that football players tend to be more aggressive and risk-taking by nature than kids rowing crew or playing softball…

by KevinJ on Jan 14, 2010 2:58 PM CST up reply actions

Don't we have

Bigger problems in the world, such as murder and rape, to be dealing with than stopping people for going 2 miles over the speed limit, having a beer or two, or not leaving a house. I feel like we have big issues and all cops ever want to do is make money and pull out radar guns.

However, it’s possible I feel that way because media is slanted to only show the negative and annoying side.

Also, if the argument was a violent argument that’s different, but if not than people should leave it be.

Bad Idea

We should not be making decisions based on how much need we have at that position. Each situation should be evaluated separately, but we should keep the same standards, no matter if the need is big or small. Otherwise you build resentment within the team and let the stars think they can get away with murder.

I bet this gets thrown out…..she isn’t going to file a charge and the police just needed to get him out of there since he wouldn’t leave. Probably wanted to get his jersey back or something equally stuipid. Nothing to get too concerned. Cops were probably not taking any chances because of his size.
—Side note- The Houston Metro lightrail train is on an honor system how you pay and get access to ride it. There are no police or agents stop you from getting on for free, but they do randomly check and if you are riding without a pass/ticket you get a $120 fine. My friend emailed me this morning that Metro cops were doing a random check to see if riders getting off had a valid pass/ticket. The cop waived him by without even asking him for his pass, so he walked on by in his suit and tie and then he stopped. He looked back at the line of folks waiting to show their tickets—all minorities. He went back and got in line and asked the cop to scan his ticket too.—

Social networking sites are just tools for personal expression. The tools we have to communicate play a big part in how we represent ourselves and interact with others basically helping form social standards on the fly.

I hope that made sense. I’m not exactly sober at the moment.
