Bumped. Suzanne Haliburton speculates this wasn't Buckner's first time in trouble with the staff.

The Chronicle is reporting that Dan Buckner will transfer. I guess this is a combination of behavior issues and the fact that Greg Davis couldn't seem to consistently work Buckner into the offense's scheme.

Wow...that was fast

It didn’t seem like his arrest was really that big of a deal. Either there was something big behind the story, or the arrest was merely the catalyst.

veteran WRs getting low

He might be missed. He was a tall, thick body WR that could get up the middle of the field. He will be missed until soemone steps up. He made some big catches for us early on and gave us some good snaps. Were going to need some of these Freshman to step it up. I wish they were here for the Fall semester. That would have been big for their development.

coaching staff is trying to make room

This gave them a reason to “open up” some space on the roster. Buckner looked promising in the first 3-4 games but really disappeared all the rest of the year. Its sad to think that about 3 years ago the recruitniks were all over this guy and we were so excited to have him. He had above average hands and height, but was too much of a tweener. My main criticism’s were his inability to recognize where he was on the field, often falling down wrong and just missing first downs by a yard or so. He didnt like contact and had Chiles-esque “elusiveness” on screens. He ran like he had weights on his ankles.

by owenh on Jan 14, 2010 6:20 PM CST reply actions

I think that just goes to show that we should temper our expectations

People are already saying that White, Davis, Jones, etc. are ready to start (and that’s just at WR), but the fact is that there’s a failure rate. Out of those top three WRs, odds are that one does well, one is a role-player, and one never amounts to much of anything. Paging Jordan Shipley, Nate Jones, and George Walker…

by burntorangehorn on Jan 14, 2010 6:28 PM CST up reply actions

Wow. A George Walker reference.

Neve thought much of Buckner; however, I’m not a huge fan of losing upper-classmen with big-game experience either.
This is all a bit suprising. A kid from the blan suburb of Allen? Who are the leaders on this team and why are their efforts failing?

Hah.

I reside in Allen. And them teens can be crazy.

by Hobbes881 on Jan 14, 2010 7:27 PM CST up reply actions

Why didn't you think much of Buckner?

I wasn’t on BON when he was being recruited, I don’t think, but I don’t recall many Texas fans having anything but optimism for the guy.

There are going to be as many Paynes and Webbers as there are Sweeds and Shipleys, I’m afraid.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 14, 2010 8:28 PM CST up reply actions

I was on BON back then

… and we were all ecstatic when he committed. Thought he was the next Big Roy. And when the season started we all thought he was a star in the making. So let’s not kid ourselves, this is a huge loss. Maybe he wouldn’t have ever made the next step, maybe he was trouble, but he’s not going to be easy to replace next year. Especially since it appears Irby is unlikely to ever see the field again.

Still a Blaine Irby fan

by patienthornsfan on Jan 15, 2010 3:47 AM CST up reply actions

That's what I was thinking

I lurked here a little, but never posted in those days. I think people get really optimistic about recruits, until they end up not setting the world on fire as true freshmen, at which point many have already moved on to getting excited about the next crop of incoming recruits. The reality is they need a little time. Buckner just expended his time.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 15, 2010 6:57 AM CST up reply actions

I wouldn't call it a huge loss

Sure, expectations were high, but he never lived up to them. It is a loss from the standpoint mentioned above about him being an upperclassman with experience next year, which would have gone a long way toward breaking in a new starting QB. But his performance on the field left a lot to be desired. I didn’t expect him to turn into a superstar next season.

by bassale47 on Jan 15, 2010 11:35 AM CST up reply actions

Never lived up to them?

He was a sophomore. It wouldn’t have been fair to write him off as having failed to meet expectations, especially in light of how he contributed more than Shipley and Cosby did at the same point in their careers.

by vinnyrox on Jan 14, 2010 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

Guess my point is freshman can contribute in bunches

by vinnyrox on Jan 14, 2010 8:56 PM CST up reply actions

On rare occasions, yes

But usually not when said freshmen are stuck behind equally- or similarly-heralded talent, as is the case with White, Davis, and Jones. With Roy, BJ, and Sloan, they came in with no one really in front of them, as I recall. Cavil was UT’s leading receiver the year before (and set the 100 receptions school record that Shipley just broke), and he graduated. Ryan Nunez, the second-leading receiver, was also gone. I think Montrell Flowers and Hodges Mitchell were the other top two, and while Mitchell was a pretty solid receiver as a RB, Flowers was more of a sprinter.

In short, there was almost no depth of any significance ahead of that best-ever trio of WR recruits. Also, note that it was the best-ever trio of WR recruits in school history.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 15, 2010 7:15 AM CST up reply actions

RYAN NUNEZ!!

I was trying to think of his name the other day and for the life of me couldn’t remember it. My recent conversation was about how I saw him play in high school at Westlake…in the same backfield with Drew Brees. And it’s not hard to argue that Nunez was the best skill player they had…inCLUDing Brees. It seems to me that they ran the triple option…with a wishbone look…and Nunez was in the backfield and not split out.

Anyway…off topic, sorry.

I wonder

If Mack thinks in 3-4 year cycles… this will set up nicely for a Senior Garret Gilbert throwing to Darius White, Mike Davis, Chris Jones, & John Harris (all would be true Juniors) at the 2013 Orange Bowl (BCS National Championship).

Hopefully hes not a deadline decision. This has been a crazy off season so far for College Football!

Um

this, perhaps? That was yesterday, no news since then. As for Jeffcoat, he actually did some interviews last week, but didn’t say anything. The only news is that he canceled his Florida visit that was scheduled for this weekend.

Scholarships

With everything that I’ve read we’ve gotta be getting close to max scholarships given for a year. I think this bodes well for getting Jeffcoat and Hicks. Wasn’t that the reason Jeffcoat cancelled his Fla trip? Not enough scholarships? This would open one up wouldn’t it? I was of the thinking that when D. White signed it was curtains for one of the two.

Yea i think he had a great body for WR but had speed for a TE but did not like contact, nor could block worth a dang but yet came in very thin as a fresh. Hes done a good job of putting weight on but when you have no speed to begin with and you try to add weight, its hard to get faster with that combo.

by grantnjones35 on Jan 14, 2010 7:50 PM CST reply actions

Yup

When you have no explosiveness or elusiveness, it’s kind of hard to be a good true receiver.

Mixed feelings

While I hate to see a guy with good physicals and experience leave the program, Dan wasn’t dominant. More importantly, no matter how good a contribution can be on-field, it’s just not worth it if a player isn’t disciplined enough to show respect for the team and its rules, let alone the law. Even if we could win a few more games, it’s not worth turning into Miami or Oklahoma in the process. This is Texas…a place for pride and class to compliment our on-field success.

Hopefully Dan can get on the right track and catch on at a good program. He’s just a kid and deserves a shot to learn from this and come out better for it.

Loads of WR talent but consistency will be a huge issue

A new QB would have growing pains regardless, but as of now he would be relying heavily on Malcolm, Kirk, and Chiles. Yikes. Goodwin and freshman to be named (I’m guessing Davis) might be our most reliable receivers.

Really unfortunate to see this from Buckner and Collins before him. Both have loads of talent and could have been leaders for the offense. Sounds like both guys got plenty of chances along the way.

Other receivers currently on the roster

Everyone seems to have forgotten the receivers we’ve gotten the last couple of years so I’ll just throw their names out as possible contributors next year as well.

Timmons – looked great in the All Star game/practices and was one of the players who received a decent amount of buzz this summer. I’d be fairly surprised if any of the incoming freshman are ahead of him on the depth chart next fall.

Hales – looked electric in high school. Needs to put on more bulk. Hoping the lack of buzz on him and 2009 playing time is a function of a logjam ahead of him at receiver.

Fitzhenry – pretty much same story as Hales. I believe he was injured in the summer or fall, but can’t remember many details.

by Horncasting on Jan 15, 2010 12:15 AM CST reply actions

Don't forget the WR that walked on from Lake Travis.

Interested to see if he get’s any playing time next year considering the bond he already has with Gilbert.

Cade McCrary?

Is he really good enough to contribute as a sophomore, seeing as how we didn’t think enough of him to offer a scholarship?

Every time I feel down and depressed, I think of seven simple words by a true wise man, Matt Leinart: "I still think we're the better team" and I usually end up hurting myself by laughing so hard.

by SurferHorn257 on Jan 15, 2010 10:43 PM CST up reply actions

True...

but Goodwin’s track speed is what got him a scholarship to begin with. The fact he was able to do something with it and run excellent routes was just an unexpected bonus. The thing with McCrary is that it seems people are ready to move on to another set of “roommates.” (I don’t if they are actually roommates. I meant this more as a commentary on their familiarity with each other from years of HS experience.)

by SurferHorn257 on Jan 16, 2010 8:17 PM CST up reply actions

Actually, it was his jumping ability that got him the scholarship

More specifically, his triple-jumping ability. For a track scholarship.

My point is just that Goodwin was an example of a guy the Texas staff didn’t think was good enough to offer a scholarship, and he certainly proved them wrong. While it’s obviously no guarantee, I was just addressing your question about whether a player who did not receive a football scholarship offer could possibly contribute early in his career.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 17, 2010 11:43 AM CST up reply actions

Other receivers

The buzz on Timmons was that he is a lot like Quan. If true, that will be awesome.
Also, don’t forget DJ Grant as a true TE. He was doing really well before getting injured last Spring.

by ttazhorn on Jan 15, 2010 2:25 AM CST reply actions

Timmons vs The Quan

Timmons is taller than Quan for sure. He’s also alot slower than Quan. Timmons is the guy who was highly underrated during the recruiting process last year, but he has hands of glue and his routes are run as precise as you can be for a HS Sr.

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

Maybe I am just naive....

but, if I ever had an opportunity to be a scholarship athelete for the University of Texas, I am going to respect that with all that I have and do everything I can to not lose it. There are tons of kids that wish they could go to UT, but it seems some of the guys we have act like its not big deal.

by future_longhorn_dad on Jan 15, 2010 7:16 AM CST reply actions

Alot of these kids are from small towns and think they can do anything...

because that town tolerated that behavior when that is not the case here in Austin. Also, the recruiting process inflating these kids egos to mammoth proportions only exacerbates the situation. Rucker needs to change things up obviously. I think we had an increase in arrests/incidents from last year to this year but I’m not positive. Can anybody confirm?

Up or Not

1 is too many. It does appear that Mack is 1 and done lately. I know the Collins thing was exceptional due to the gun and felony charges, Davis was over at “but coach”. This one I think was minor by comparison. What do these guys need to understand though? Will Buckner have to sit out a year if he transfers to another D-1 program?

I think the tone is set that no one person is above the team.

by orangetower on Jan 15, 2010 8:41 AM CST up reply actions

1 and Done?

I don’t think Mack is 1 and Done or he would have gave the boot to Monroe most recently for the DUI that became a lesser charge and Sergio earlier in the year for nailing the apartment building with his car past curfew. Maybe, Buckner just wanted to leave. Maybe he wants to move closer to the chick that has made him look like a chump or get further away. Maybe this wasn’t the first time he has been in trouble and the coaching staff has kept it quiet.

by ttazhorn on Jan 15, 2010 9:28 AM CST reply actions

Chaisson

The Chaisson story was notably underplayed last year, as it lacked the sensationalism of the guy that got a scholarship to Tennessee after being involved in the rape of his cousin some years earlier.

There's also that former Sooner that arrested for child molestation and child pornography

This guy

http://www.koco.com/news/20557118/detail.html

They have had their fare share of arrests. Demarcus Granger (shoplifting) and Loadholt (DWI) to name a few. Some of the lady Sooner athletes have also been arrested as well.

No university is clean of arrests. However, we tend to be leading in that category as of late.
