Support Doctors Without Borders In Haiti
I just made a donation to one of the best organizations in the world, to help with one of the worst situations in the world. I urge everyone to consider doing the same. Even the smallest of donations helps, whether to Doctors Without Borders, the Red Cross, the Dalembert Foundation, Partners In Health, or anyone else who is working to provide relief and recovery.

Well done PB
You can also text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 (charged on your cell phone bill).

$5
PB, thanks open up this humanitarian thread.
For those who can’t afford $10, Wyclef Jean is telling everyone that they can text “Yele” without quotation to 501501. A $5 will charge to your phone bill. You can do as many as 6 times each month if you want to.
Also
canned food, blankets, BOTTLED WATER***** (sold for ~ 2.50 for a 24 btl pack at a Food Town near you), etc can be donated to your local donation centers. haiti’s water source has been contaminated, and cholera can spread fast. Diarhhea and dehyradtion are probable. Water is the next best thing to money you can donate
Water
Another good way to donate water is gallons or other large containers. Dollar-for-dollar, more water can get to people who need it if it’s sealed one-, two-, and five-gallon containers. The big water-cooler bottles are nice, but the deposit will eat into the impact, and it’s not like they have dispensers. Gallons really work well, and they’re readily available even at grocery stores.

But
I heard an interview yesterday with the head of the UN Humanitarian Relief Division who said that attempting to send items (i.e. food, water etc.) is actually counter-productive. The main problem right now with getting relief to people is the transportation infrastructure and putting food and water etc. in the “pipeline” just adds to the problem. Rather, she suggests cash donations to organizations you trust that have the ability to actually deliver the aid. In other words, a $2.50 donation to Feed the Children or some other charity is going to more easily translate into water getting to the people that need it than taking a 24 pack of water to a donation center. Anyway … that is what she said.

Matching contributions
I usually try to find funds that will get matching contributions, and while my employer does this for the Red Cross Haiti Relief fund, it probably wouldn’t be a smart idea to post my employee number and password online, even to allow people to contribute with matching funds from my company. Does anyone know of another mechanism for getting matching donations?
45,000 was the estimate reported yesterday by the Haitian ambassador. That country was barely starting to stabilize, and was in no position to sustain a disaster like this. Despite the deaths and injuries, I hope the country comes out of this with strength to keep up the positive gains it had been making the past two or three years.

Dollar for dollar matching
Try and find corporations that are doing dollar for dollar matching. I know salesforce.com was doing something along these lines, so my employer matched 2500 worth of employee donations, sent it in through salesforce who matched and our total contribution became just shy of 10k.
Thanks for posting this PB

Awesome
In general, it’s sooo hard to tell whether your money actually makes it directly to the Haiti efforts. Even the text message efforts, which have raised millions of dollars, won’t get to Haiti for 90 days (although the Red Cross says they will advance some of the funds).
Here is another good one: The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, where 99.5% of the monies go directly toward Haiti.
