Darius White: D-Money to Texas

Flash onto Darius White, ready to commit. First thing to notice -- no Okie lite hat on the table. Uh oh, hidden cap trick? Naw. A pause for a second, waiting for the anticipation to build a bit, then a reach. Right for it. Burnt orange, with that horn on it. D-Money, to Texas. After all ups and downs, the summer fade by his longtime favorite, back to where he was last fall when he seemed like a lock. Now headed to Austin.

This is your celebration thread. And it's probably also appropriate at this time to thank Mack Brown for coming to Austin and reflect on the greatness of the rest of this class.

I don't think so.

Florida added Easley and the way that they were drooling over him (understandably, he was a force) he’ll soon be a 5-star in ESPN’s rankings. I think we sit at 2 unless if we pick up hicks and jeffcoat

Have a hard on for measurables. Davis isn’t tall enough and he’s not the kind of blazer that those guys usually give five stars to. IT and BOB’s (RIP) state rankings are much more well thought out.

2010 Class WRs

We have 7 WRs in 2010 class??
Darius White, Mike Davis, DeMarco Cobbs, Chris Jones, Darius Terrell, Adrian Phillips, and John Harris.
Is this going to be a problem sometime in the future? We are going to have like 20 WRs on the roster next year.

by austinite on Jan 2, 2010 1:17 PM CST reply actions

Cobbs may not play WR, and Terrell may be a TE

Five is still a high number, but not terrible, considering only Timmons committed at WR last year.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 2, 2010 1:21 PM CST up reply actions

by SpiritOfTheFedora on Jan 2, 2010 1:26 PM CST up reply actions

Phillips is considered an athlete who might not play wide receiver

Terrell is supposedly going to be beefed up into a tight end.

Rumors are that Cobbs will switch positions, to either running back or safety.

And, yes, attrition will (have to) take place at WR. I suspect the coaches know of at least two who will not return next summer. No names — check the roster at MB-TF and figure it out.

You make a good point about Phillips and Harris. Except . . .

Once a player has been a commit as long as these two have (9-11 months, I’d guess), they’re already thinking of themselves as Longhorns. Have been all summer and fall.

Our coaches are telling them not to worry about who commits, who signs, just come and play. Starting jobs don’t always go to the 5-stars (this means you, Tray Allen); sometimes they go to the 2s and 3s (this means you, Blake Gideon and Colt McCoy) who listen to the coaches and work hard.

The Longhorns have been riding a wave of momentum on the recruiting trail. This week in practice, White got an up close look at the strength of the Longhorns’ recruiting class.

“I was looking at the practice field and said that if I did choose UT that we’re going to have a real good recruiting class on the offensive and defensive side,” White said. “It’s going to be really good.”

Needs to develop route running skills

But shear athleticism is off the charts. If he shows up to play the way he did today then he’s definitely considered in the rotation.

by orangetower on Jan 2, 2010 1:41 PM CST up reply actions

Agree

Ahead of him in the rotation will be Malcolm Williams, Brandon Collins, James Kirkendoll, Marquise Goodwin and possibly DJ Monroe. Then add in Mike Davis and Chris Jones, Davis has better route-running skills at this point and Chris Jones might just surprise everyone, he’s got loads of talent also.

But White will find a spot in the rotation, he’s a natural playmaker.

by SpiritOfTheFedora on Jan 2, 2010 1:51 PM CST up reply actions

wr rotation

Am I right in assuming Buckner will be asked to bulk up & play a more traditional TE role? That would take him out of the mix. I don’t think Chiles will be an impediment to these guys playing time, & if Kirk doesn’t take it up a notch neither will he. Collins will need to come back strong & Goodwin will need to continue his development (very hopeful on these two). To me it seems Williams is the only sure thing. The rest (Timmons, Hales, etc.) don’t really have substantial game time so I can’t consider them “ahead” of the new guys. I very much think these guys have the opportunity to get PT as true freshmen, though I’d doubt the whole group avoids the red shirt.

by hungry on Jan 2, 2010 2:22 PM CST up reply actions

Good question

He’s not a good blocker for a tight end or H-back. And he did catch a 51-yd TD against Missouri playing WR his freshman year, his true position. He’ll probably remain at the flex until a bona fide tight end (Trey Graham, D.J. Grant or Darius Terrell?) steps up. Then does he join the WR mix or the tight end/H-back mix?

by SpiritOfTheFedora on Jan 2, 2010 4:52 PM CST up reply actions

I've been hoping TE/H-back

I have this hope that the 2 year hole at TE is replaced w/ an overabundance next year, but that would take a remarkable change of luck. Looking for Mathews, Graham, Grant & hoping for Buckner.

You need to think back to 2000 . . . .

We had two freshman receivers who had comparable stats to A.J. Green and Julio Jones. If Mike Davis and Darius White do what B.J. Johnson and Roy Williams did I doubt anyone would complain.

That’s a good start. Saying all the right things. This class is looking like it will compare favorably with the first set of triplets – Roy, BJ and Sloan. And given our struggles at RB the past two years I couldn’t be happier.

by SpiritOfTheFedora on Jan 2, 2010 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

I think Gilbert needed to get some snaps

My sense is that the coaching staff has made a bit of an alteration concerning redshirts. They’re looking ahead and calculating the depth chart for the next season: If a player who might redshirt now is a decent bet to start next season, they try to get him as ready as they can by putting on the field.

Gilbert needed to play. Mason Walters needed to play, and did, until sidelined by injury. All three DBs played, because (I’m sure) the coaches figured they had a good DB group coming behind them and because so many DBs are needed for special teams and they wanted to get game activity for them. Coaches may (should) still be regretting the redshirt decisions made for Earl Thomas and Christian Scott in 2007 (and the price the ’08 team paid).

by edsp on Jan 2, 2010 7:08 PM CST up reply actions

Mack Had No Choice On GG

If Mack trusted GG to win a potentially big game more than he trusted Sherrod – he had no other option. He had to get him snaps and get him prepared. Everyone knew that this was a season with MNC possibilities. You don’t mess around with that for shirts.

by realmccoy on Jan 2, 2010 8:09 PM CST up reply actions

It's hard to say whether he would've trusted GG more than SH in an emergency situation

And, with just one game left in the (con)quest, I hope we never know. This can remain a what-if forever, as far as I’m concerned.

I don’t really know whether the mop-up snaps for Gilbert are much of an indication of what would’ve happened had McCoy gone down with the outcome in any sort of doubt (knocking on wood). But regardless, I sure hope the 26 pass attempts on the season turn out to have returned enough benefit for GG’s development to make it worth the expended season of eligibility.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 3, 2010 12:01 PM CST up reply actions

If You're Asking About Gilbert's Potential

Then without a doubt, YES. Potential has to be proven though and I like the odds of it with this kid. He is a lifelong Horn fan and has proven his ability and moxie on the biggest stages of higschool football anywhere with 2 Texas state championships. His head is on straight and he makes good decisions with the ball but most importantly still considers himself as a student of the game. He can make any throw, run, and manage a game. He definitley has all the right stuff and now has the right tools to work with as well.

One of the things you have to love about Greg Davis and Mack Brown is their ability to adapt to the starting QB strengths and adapt offense to those strengths. And the recruiting rankings is really just fun for us geeks, but usually on Rivals they award 30-35 guys 5 stars

Currently:

Jeffcoat – 6
Hicks – 12
Wilson – 24
D. White – 26
Tevin Jackson – 34

All of them will have a shot. And with the outstanding play late in the year of guys like Bible, Dorsey, & Mike Davis… who knows?

Dominique Sanders-question for GBR

Interesting that he was still with Darius White and that White even brought a teacher to the game. I think he has a grasp on “family” and will fit in great at Texas.

When the announcer asked White about Sanders’ likely commitment school, he was very hesitant and didn’t really answer (which is cool, he should let Sanders announce for himself). I know we didn’t offer Sanders and don’t have room for him on schollie, but any chance he will be a preferred walk on? Kind of like the WR from Lake Travis that played with GG? He does look like Div. 1 talent and may be a surprise?

by Wrangler86 on Jan 2, 2010 3:24 PM CST reply actions

He has offers from a ton of great schools

I’d really admire a kid who had such a big desire to play for UT that he’d prefer to walk on there over taking a scholarship elsewhere. Look at his offer list, and you’ll see that he has a lot of good options if he wants a scholarship.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/dallasnews/football/recruiting/player-Dominique-Sanders-91510

I decided not to walk on at UT or Baylor for track because I didn’t want to incur any debts fo school, so I took the scholarship elsewhere. But Sanders might be in a different situation, so good for him he if does indeed get a preferred walk-on “offer.”

IMHO 40's have little to do with football speed

They’re very dependent on the timer and the track. This is the great thing about summer camp evaluations. Interesting thing with him is he took official visits to Minnesota, LaTech and Utah while receiving offers that included Okie State, aTm and Tech but no official visits. Maybe he visited unofficially. SMU and TCU also offered him which makes me wonder if he might stay close to home.

Does anyone know how many stars Williams, BJ, Slaon? I know they were the No. 4 ranked Team but cant find individual ranks….

Ohhh well. I love this years recruiting class everything else is icing on the cake.

I’m not greedy but we need to be contending annually and winning a championship every few years. THIS IS A GOOD START!

You're right

Maybe it was SuperPrep where I saw the #1/#3/#8 rankings.

WRs

With all these elite Receivers, competition should be good come spring practice + GG. + Connor Woods. We should pick up Leach and let him do his thing but with actual athletes. (He should be able to find a crabtree among our WRs)

Love the New Mack!

I think Marquisse Goodwin is a great example and recruiting point for the Horns. Comes to camp as a 3 star recruit – we didn’t have to burn the schollie if he redshirts, and still earns his way into a meaningul role for a team headed to the MNC. That speaks volumes to everyone.

Hooked on Texas commits
In the fourth quarter, the Texas Longhorns continued to build on their top three-ranked recruiting class with the commitment of five-star receiver Darius White (Fort Worth, Texas/Dunbar). As it turned out, it was a big day on and off the field for the Longhorns.

Davide DePas for ESPN.comFive-star WR Darius White is part of what will be a group of playmakers heading to Texas.
White combined with fellow commit Mike Davis (Dallas/Skyline) to score three touchdowns in the Black team’s victory. White’s big day started with a punt return that he nearly broke for a TD. The White team wasn’t so lucky the second time around. He also caught an 11-yard TD pass.

“On the first punt return, I cut back and kind of ran into my teammate and somebody got me from behind,” White said. “On the second return, coach [Todd] Lawson told me to act like I was at home, and I did. I cut and saw an opening, made people miss and ran to the zone. On the quick slant, the dude on defense was telling me that I better not run a quick slant. I was like, ‘OK.’ I ran the quick slant, was right there wide open and kept him from my body and made the catch.”

Davis, who led all receivers in the game with three catches for 53 yards, got in the end zone on a 25-yard reception. The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder timed the pass from Alabama-bound quarterback Phillip Sims (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Frommel), perfectly, leaping high in the air with extended arms bringing down the ball over two White team defenders.

“I think we are fixing to give people trouble,” White said. “It’s going to be real bad. Mike can play, and I’m looking forward to playing with him.”

Chris Jones (Daingerfield, Texas/Daingerfield) and John Harris (Garland, Texas/Naaman Forest) join White and Davis in the 2010 class of receivers. The Longhorns have three receiver commitments ranked in the ESPNU 150, with Jones checking in at No. 68.

Taylor Bible also collected a fumble. Impressive day for the next crew of burnt orange stars.

Speaking of trouble

… will there be a scuffle over who gets to wear #4 once White gets to campus?

He needs to switch to #16. In his new role, I think David Thomas is a better role model!

Mike can play, and I’m looking forward to playing with him.
