According to a tweet from Kevin Morrell, the executive sports producer at Fox 4, the Dallas affiliate, Jackson Jeffcoat will announce his collegiate decision on January 31st live on the station.

No word on the in-home visit Mack Brown had with the Jeffcoats on Wednesday, but there will be few details to emerge from the meeting. Jeffcoat is still expected to take his official visit to Oklahoma this weekend.

I know this is our equivalent of the Hot Stove League

But frankly I’m exhausted thinking of the recruitment of Jeffcoat and Hicks. Not to denigrate those young men at all — they’ve handled this with far more maturity than most — but its just been a long and tiring process. Here’s to landing them both.

ditto

Of course, my exhaustion with it still doesn’t mean I won’t do my google news searches for the latest on them at least four times a day.

No fun for us recruiting junkies

but this is probably the way all recruitments should be handled.

ditto ditto

I can’t believe we have to start this process all over again for 2011 guys and I’m thinking I have major O.C.D. for tracking this nstuff on-stop.

The whole drawn out process is so foreign to me because the moment I saw the tower and the stadium while driving down 1-35 I knew that I was a Longhorn. It would suck to be so confused and unable to commit. How is anybody really torn between A&M and UT? Are you a farmer or a cosmopolitan person….pretty basic to me.

If A&M offers a full ride scholly and UT doesn't

Then it shouldn’t matter.

The headscratcher:

When someone chooses a full ride at atm over UT. Or OU over UT. Unless that someone happens to prefer the rural life.

That's not really the point

I was talking about guys with offers to both schools. Guys like Jake Matthews and Cory Nelson had UT offers but picked the aggies. Even I would suck it up and pick A&M if I couldn’t get a UT schollie.

by Wrangler86 on Jan 22, 2010 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe they want an education in the Vet field.

If had aspirations to be a vet, I would pick A&M over UT. If I wanted to major in anything else, I would pick UT. Faulting someone for simply choosing where they want to go to school is absurd, unless they make mockery of the process, such as a McFarland/Seastrunk/Scott.

I will tell my children that if they want to go to A&M, they will have my undying support. I would love for them to go to Texas like I did, but if they’re getting an education, I care nonetheless. A&M is a damn fine school, regardless of whether my blood runs orange.

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

My baby sister is an Aggie

Kind of strange because she was really close with my other younger sister who is also a Longhorn. She is also the least “country” of all of us. She just wanted to do her own thing, but she sure loved it. I still don’t get it, but I can appreciate that some folks love that place. My neice and nephew both say they want to go to A&M, and they of course have my support—but I tease them non-stop too. It comes with the package.

Hope that you are having a better week Kriess.

was looking at scout.com

for whatever it’s worth, 1 of their “experts” thinks Jeffcoat will end up at OU, the other has him ending up at UT.

However, both think Hicks will end up at Ohio State.

jordan hicks isn’t considering bama/usc, and they don’t even list florida, one of his real top 3
corey nelson has been committed to A&M for forever

Jeffcoat/Hicks

Losing Jeffcoat to OU would be a blow, but we are pretty good at DE (though we need production)

Losing Hicks to Ohio St would be less of a blow, but LB is a position of need, though we have some good young players.

I'd think.....

……. inking at least one of the two is a near requisite for Will Muschamp. We need to know he can reel in the marquee players.

National Signing Day

One thing I’ve seen going around a bit is that some people think that National Signing Day is a deadline for recruits to declare. That’s not the case. It’s simply the first date that they can sign a binding national letter of intent. They have a lot of time after NSD to make a decision, assuming schools hold scholarships for them. I think David Oku and Bryce Brown waited for a month or more after NSD to sign with Tennessee. So while it seems unlikely, Hicks could end up not committing for a few more months.

I don’t think I’d survive that, and that is sad.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 22, 2010 10:05 AM CST reply actions

Terrell Pryor

Is the most famous case.

by jc25 on Jan 22, 2010 12:48 PM CST up reply actions

Terrelle Pryor wsa one of those who waited

until well after NSD.

If Hicks’ intent (my suspicion) has been to NOT pick Ohio State, waiting several months more makes a lot of sense. He’s gotta live with teammates and classmates who’ve been recruiting for the Buckeyes for 2-3 years!

2 Questions:

1) How can I get on Kevin Morrell’s tweets, the executive sports producer at Fox 4, Dallas affiliate?!?!?!

2) Does the Asian dude with the dragon tattoo in all the “GET RIPPED!” ads know karate? Cause that would change how I’d approach him. Just sayin.

So Stoopsie Gets Final Sales Pitch to Jackson Jeffcoat?

Or can Coach Boom go in afterwards? Anyway, if Jackson looks at the careers of Rak and Sergio – I think it would serve him better to attend UT. Sergio was a raw LB and will be a first round Hybrid LB/DE selection. Rak made all rookie team after being an unheralded recruit. I haven’t seen a DE from OU on the All Rookie NFL team for a while.

Even Tommy Harris you can make an argument against

I’m a life long Bears fan and his first few years he was spectacular but you would be hard pressed to say he has been great these past few seasons.

Jeremy Beals

He’s a projected 2011 first rounder (or close). Sam Acho is projected in the second round.

by edsp on Jan 22, 2010 5:15 PM CST reply actions

But those are 2011 projections

And this far out, it’s just guesswork, normally by extreme amateurs. That’s because those with draft evaluation credibility are pretty focused on the 2010 draft.

Also, lots of times the amateur sites base their projections on how the players were rated coming out of high school, which is why guys like Taylor Mays and Early Doucet were rated as top-ten picks a year before they went pro, but dropped a lot leading up to their actual drafts.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 22, 2010 5:22 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think it is as bad as it seems.

He has had his visit here and had plenty of time to become comfortable with what he experienced here and think about it. He is going to Norman (bad enough) outside of football season (even worse) and therefore does not really get the same experience as he did with Texas.

I think it is a real stretch .....

to say the draft history for DEs at the two schools is going to be a factor in Jeffcoat’s decision..

by Arroyo Grande on Jan 22, 2010 6:06 PM CST reply actions

Well think about it.

If his main goal is to play in the NFL, then he should probably choose the team who has the better NFL draft record (if you know what I mean) and if he wants to make more money, if he goes like Kindle in the 1st round thats more money than the second. So, if he’s really thinking about the NFL, draft history should somewhat factor in.

I think knowing who his position coach is key

At OU he doesn’t even know right now. He’d be crazy to commit to them. I just can’t imagine this weekend is anything other than a man to man, face to face break up. Thanks Coach Stoops, but check you later.

by Wrangler86 on Jan 22, 2010 9:16 PM CST reply actions

What does Jackie Shipp coach? Is he strictly dt's?

I imagine he has met his position coach, unless the d-line coach that left was the position coach for de’s.

by 2Cor12:9 on Jan 22, 2010 9:45 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think he has met the DE coach because they don't have one right now

http://newsok.com/ou-defensive-ends-coach-chris-wilson-leaving-for-mississippi-state/article/3432541?custom_click=rss

Chris Wilson was the DE coach, and he left to be Co-Defensive Coordinator at Miss. State. I have not heard who Stoops has hired, but allegedly it is not Jim Jeffcoat because he said he is staying at UH. The Jeffcoats would probably be privy to Stoops’ inside information, but publicly there is no coach currently in the vacated position which makes it hard for me to imagine Jackson Jeffcoat making the blind commit. He does know what he is getting with Stoops, Venebale and Shipp, but still….a risk at DE.

I sure hope this doesn't end up like last year!!!

Where Devon Kennard was between us and USC and JMac was between OU and us and Dre Kirkpatrick was between us and Bama and there was one more that ended up at UF can’t remember who that was right now I want to say Jarvis Jones not sure though but that doesn’t sound right. I just don’t want to get my hopes up and get neither

by kcmorse on Jan 22, 2010 9:35 PM CST reply actions

I think we are already in great shape this year

First off, we got the majority of guys we wanted already. OU was after almost all of our commits, but we got them. We got Connor Wood who was OU’s original pick at QB. They didn’t switch to Blake Bell until after we got Wood’s commit. OU was fighting hard for Darius White and Reggie Wilson, but we landed them already. Also, we got an extra special present in Mike Davis de-commiting from LSU for us. He is amazing and OU would have loved him. Finally, we even raided OK by getting the number 1 player in OK in Demarco Cobbs who is an amazing athlete that is probably going to play RB at Texas while he works on receiving skills.

Also, unlike last year, we were not the lead for the guys you listed except McFarland. Dre Kirkpatrick was always an Alabama lean, and when he fathered a child with his girlfriend in Bama it was pretty clear that he had responsibilities to deal with in-state and that he would be staying closer to home. He made the right choice IMO. Kennard is a great talent, but he was from Phoenix and USC was always the leader for him. We were not the leader for him. As to McFarland. He, his mother, and T.Evans all showed that it was a blessing in disguise not to get that douchebag . Calvin Howell will prove that he was the top DT in the class and will surely outplay McFarland and make us proud.
No matter what happens with Jeffcoat and Hicks, our glass is more than half-full.

Muschamp

I think since Muschamp turned down Tennessee, it proves he’s going to be at Texas for a long time. The recruits last year prabably thought Muschamp might not be at Texas long, and that effected their decision. Texas will start bringing top recruits in the country on defense because Muschamp will be there.

by Longhorns84 on Jan 23, 2010 7:32 AM CST up reply actions

Agree

That was a huge deal he turned down. Has to look good to recruits, even if we don’t end up getting those big two.

by tblog123 on Jan 23, 2010 12:54 PM CST up reply actions

The only job I worry about Muschamp leaving for is Georgia (which is his alma mater). At some point UGA is going to notice that while Richt is a really nice guy and a pretty decent recruiter he’s just not a very good football coach. I just hope that happens after Mack retires and not before.

by hodad on Jan 25, 2010 9:57 AM CST up reply actions

Richt is also good at coaching an offense

I just don’t think he’s very well suited to running his own college program. He’s like Weis in that respect. Of course, this doesn’t negate your original point, with which I otherwise agree: he’s probably going to get fired at some point, because Georgia football is going the way of Tennessee.
