Monday Night Open Thread

Good: A two credit class knocked out by the end of January. Bad: A final exam in January.

I've got a final tomorrow that's keeping me from finishing this week's TBR and from enjoying the two huge Big Monday games on tonight -- Georgetown at Syracuse (34-29 Cuse at the break), and Missouri at Kansas (8 p.m. ESPN). This is your open thread.

For visual accoutrement: my Rose Bowl video, which was too painful to post until the wounds healed a bit. A ten gallon hat tip to _JB_ for putting this together.

I Feel For Ya

I know how ya feel, man. I’ve got high school exams all this week (even though they don’t really compare to college exams!).

Thanks PB

It was a fun video up to about minute 9. Great to see the picture of both of you along with Ryan and myself at the end. That was cool getting to finally meet in person after a few years of being on BON. Even though we lost, I will always treasure being at the NC game as a Texas-Ex with my son, a December Texas graduate and now a Texas-Ex and my daughter, a sophomore at UT.

Enjoyed it

It was a pleasure meeting y’all. I’m sure I’ll see you in the fall — moving back to Austin in June. About. Damn. Time.

Graduate in May. Take the bar in Austin in July. Start work in September.

In reference to law school

I am not a law student and don’t claim to have much knowledge on the subject, but i am guessing you (PB) or anyone familiar with it can shed some light on the topic. I am unsure how these things go, but aren’t the bar exams different from state? Does it make it harder for you, currently being a student in Indiana, pass the bar over the students who have studied in Texas? Do you have to prepare on your own for the minor differences in Texas law, as well as focus on your final semester classes? Just wondering as a few of my roommates are about to graduate from UT and study elsewhere.

by shaqui chan on Jan 25, 2010 11:19 PM CST up reply actions

Makes no difference

Because they don’t teach you what’s on the bar exam in law school, no matter where you go to school. Whether you go to UT or Notre Dame for law school, you wind up cramming for the Texas state bar for 7 weeks prior to taking it.

So yes, the bar exams are different from state to state, but no, it’s not much of a help to go to school in the state where you’re taking the bar. Might help a little bit, but generally speaking, everyone prepares for the bar the same way, irrespective of what state’s bar they’re taking, or which state their law school was located.

Makes sense

Good luck on your final and the bar! If i need a lawyer next fall i might be giving you a call.

That's a high quality video.

Now I feel bad for just screwing around with the camera for like 6 hours. Though that time I followed the Bama fan down the sidewalk for 20 yards while filming his pants totally made it worth it.

And for $65 a night in West Hollywood/Beverly Hills during the national championship game, you can’t beat the Beverly Inn. Especially if you decide to book 2 days before the game. Good times!

For a while it was like watching national geographic footage

Particularly the free range mullet. I understand they can’t grow that large in domestication.

But yeah, way to lose your secret identity BZ. JC25 just realized that you’re not playing yourself in Grey’s Anatomy with Books.

My secret identity has slowly been sneaking out for a couple years, with the preview mags, etc.

Might as well give a face to it….a shocked face as I walked out of my hotel motel only to find myself on video camera.

But yes, I apologize to all adoring Billy Zane fans out there. To ease your pain, here’s this.

by billyzane on Jan 25, 2010 11:13 PM CST up reply actions

Surprise notwithstanding, if you’re going to be videotaped exiting a cheap motel in a shady side of LA, it happened in the best possible light.

Thanks for the wildlife footage, I laughed.

Not exactly the shady side of motel

We were all in Beverly Hills.

I was just glad you didn’t film any Bama faces as you followed them around. The lawyer in you must have instinctively avoided it — otherwise we’d have a lawsuit on our hands!

BZ, a redhead?

Well that explains an awful lot.

Nope. Blonde hair.

Might be the sun in the video giving it a weird tint. Does this explain an awful lot too?

In other open thread news

Kansas has been ridiculously athletic so far. Up 26-18 on the Tigers.

Feeling for you Peter...

I had a crash course in Neurology that finished up on Friday. Every afternoon for three weeks, then a final for 2 credit hours. Good luck on yours!

by ElMariachiLoco on Jan 25, 2010 8:37 PM CST reply actions

Nice

It’s a rough thing in the short term, but great to knock out early in the semester. You’re giving me energy, though. I was feeling sorry for myself going through all this mess on Credit Default Swaps, but I think I’m glad it’s not Neurology.

wha?

there’s a basketball game on?

by horndude on Jan 25, 2010 8:38 PM CST reply actions

Cole Aldrich is going to own Dexter Pittman

I expect Sherron to be limited against Doge. Kansas has some shooters but we’ve shown we can shut that down. They’re athletic enough to run but we can stay with that as well. Aldrich’s outlet passes are Kevin Love-esque. We’ve been slow at transition D quite a few times and will need to step that up.

They may not have an answer for Damion, but I don’t think we have an answer for Aldrich at all. I’m also worried about the Morris twins matching up well against our options at the 4. I don’t think you want to see GJ or Damion inside with them. Looks like you may be able to exploit Henry or Morningstar on D; too bad our only option there is Hamilton. Maybe Bradley; he’ll definitely need to have a good game. Lucas will probably get some run, as Collins is small enough for Lucas to stay in front.

Morningstar just hit a running 3 at the buzzer to put Knasas up 50-30. My goodness.

by jc25 on Jan 25, 2010 8:57 PM CST reply actions

Wow, great half by KU

Jayhawks up 50-30 on banked in three at buzzer. Halftime.

I didn’t think Mizzou had much of a chance but down 20 after 20 min is still surprising.

Not sure I get the mixed "2 'fer" metaphor

of posting your AWESOME MNC video with the Big Monday open game thread. But whatever, it’s your blog.

Since I have nothing positive to say about the Jayhawks or the ’Cuse, I will say the video reminded me of why we are fans. Come rain or shine, In victory or defeat, we prevail. And while that gorgeous day will be long remembered, I appreciate the enthusiasm to share your memory. It truly was a magnificent day.

Dammit, it’s great to be a Longhorn!

There is a hole in my heart

As absurd as it may sound I swear I get a pain like feeling in my heart when I see the players on the field in that video. I’m talkin right next to the place where it hurts when I think about other much more relevant times in my life. I swear until the day I die I will be sour grapes about the fact that the better team lost that game. AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH. DAMN IT! Thank you PB for your dedication to this site.

Yup

by far the most questionable thing about male SEC fans are those pom-poms

How do yuo call yourself a man when you shake a pom-pom at a football game?

And don’t try to call them ‘shakers’, they’re pom-poms.

It’s the one thing dumber than their ESS-EE-SEE chant.

by Beergut on Jan 27, 2010 4:04 AM CST up reply actions

Yah, those male Bama fans should take some man lessongs from your leaders:
The song’s popularity with students at Texas A&M caused some controversy in 2009, leading to disciplinary action taken against a Director of Student Activities. This episode began when a student group, Aggie Yell Leaders (a male only group), uploaded a video of their fun and frivolity celebrating their joy ride to a football game while singing the Ding Dong Song. The song’s popularity is largely due to its euphemistic chorus: “Ooohh, you touch my tralala… Mmmmm, My ding ding dong.” -wiki

And aggy calling out a Bama/SEC chant as “dumb”? Oh, my.
