Gtown up 15 on Duke

I was hoping to go but I’m all snowed in today

East coast eh?

I am snowed in as well, in DC… I thought about going to the Duke v Gtown game, but when I heard Obama was going I knew that would be a lost cause, and the snow just made is worse…

Longhorn Road Trip has another good preview. Don’t know why that site doesn’t get more links here.

Do you have KBVO? It is one of the lower numbered stations. I have AT&T and it is #7 or #1007 for HD. They usually carry Big 12 basketball games.

Here is what were are this year:

in teams with equal or greater talent playing us, if the other team aint turning the ball over at a rate of 2:1 vs us, we lose

Michigan State and UNC wins were fools gold. Each of those teams have almost 20 turn overs.

We get past the sweet 16 and ill personally give everyone a $100 check

This is what we are. No more, no less. Anyone else who thinks we are better than this is lying to themselves. No overreaction here.

Slumps happen

Yea we havent been great, no one is denying that.

But to say the first 2 months didnt happen and the talent isnt there to make the elite 8 is a fallacy.

In 3 weeks we could be saying the opposite basically. Thats the nature of college bball

KU v KSU? will this be the first conference loss for KU tonight?

by Ohio Horn on Jan 30, 2010 3:51 PM CST reply actions

This is why I didn't think we had the easiest schedule in the Big 12 this week

Baylor’s strengths happen to be countered by our greatest weakness: Point Guard. How many turnovers are we going to have at the top of the key? We saw our guard play implode against UConn and sloppy guard play is the reason Baylor is up right now.

Oh, that and our inability to make layups and free throws.

by the1austin on Jan 30, 2010 3:51 PM CST reply actions

Season is playing in reverse of my expectations

The way we’ve played the last 5-6 games is how i thought we’d play in the first 5-6 games as this team built chemistry. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be an easy solution for our problems as every game is something different…turnovers, defense, free throws, fouls, poor shooting…you name it.

by feltgod on Jan 30, 2010 3:52 PM CST reply actions

Really disappointed

I thought we finally had the offensive talent we lacked last year. Can’t believe I’m saying it, but we miss Abrams. Definitely could use someone who could shoot the long ball and makes 90% of his FTs.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 30, 2010 3:54 PM CST up reply actions

First half sucked pretty good, but I expect us to wear them out. We’ll lead by 5 mins in 2nd half.

TOs and Missed Layups

Its hard to keep a team from shooting 50% from the field if they get 4 or 5 layups off TOs each half,

Even harder when you shoot under 40% because you miss layups

when was the last time Texas has had a 3 point sharp shooter? Doesn’t seem to have one this year.

by Ryan2907 on Jan 30, 2010 3:54 PM CST reply actions

last year we had Abrams

but yeah, it’s been pretty rare. Lucas is shooting over 50% from three, but we can see he doesn’t deserve a lot of playing time. Bradley is shooting 41.5% from three surprisingly, and James is shooting just under 40%. After that, it’s a steep downfall.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 30, 2010 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

Someone needs to teach Wingman

how to play low post offense. i don’t think i’ve seen a post player with worse offensive skills near the basket. he always seems out of control and in a rush. He doesn’t even give himself a chance the way he just throws shots up at the rim. Very frustrating to watch. he is not good enough defensively to overlook his poor offensive output.

TOs + Composure

Big difference from not having TJ or DJ is the ability to sense the need to reign it in…

We have too many stretches without adjusting to the momentum of the game, slow down and get it to Pitt or Rick needs to call a timeout and reset

everone on here fools themselves of a lot of things. things that when i point out, everyone cries foul.

ive called for a lot of changes in UT sports over the past year and everyone on here says “no, ur crazy,” to things like benching chiles for kirkendoll, like the fact that beasley is a walking PI call, the fact that our team is way too young to make it past the sweet 16, etc etc.

just accept the reality of what is happening. this is our team. they are trying to play their best today against a team that is unranked. and we are getting stomped.

im not saying i dont support em, im just saying everyone needs to pump the breaks on the final 4 talk for a couple of years

by tblog123 on Jan 30, 2010 4:11 PM CST reply actions

I don't think it's a matter of not having heart

we’re just too sloppy, and we’re offensively inept against a zone defense. Turnovers and fastbreak points are demoralizing us. They’ll make any team look heartless.

by tblog123 on Jan 30, 2010 4:17 PM CST up reply actions

We've got to understand how to close games against solid competition

In our losses we’ve let momentum change the dynamic of the game, something that has been fueled by our inability to get to the line, hit free throws and stop big runs. Consistently good defense will always give you a chance. The team needs to learn to stay focused on that end of the court when the offense isn’t clicking.

We all knew that games that come down to FT shooting don’t favor us. Before we blame the refs, we should know that the players had several opportunities to tie the game or take the game with free throw shots, and blew it nearly every time.

Close games = doom.

The GM of the Rockets said “great teams don’t win close games, they avoid them”. We have to avoid putting ourselves in a situation to make free throws to win. Embarrassing, but it’s the truth. Look back to our awful 1st half, late fouls before regulation.

With all that said, Baylor tying the game was terrible luck. Their guy was at the right place at the right time, and the airball went right through them. When you see something like that, you wonder if fate is simply on Baylor’s side today.

While it feels like shit to lose like this, the only thing that matters is trying to get a 1/2 seed. We’re probably a 3 seed right now.

Upcoming week: @ Okie St, @ OU – I’ll be happy if we go 1-1.

How could we have lost?

With such a solid offensive game plan and 100% effort throughout, I can’t believe we didn’t cream them. Plus, the obvious improvement in free throw shooting…

Right On!

by bfaut86 on Jan 30, 2010 5:48 PM CST reply actions

We lost it by not pushing full press full time.

Everytime at half we push full press def and start to get back into it. We shouldn’t be in that position in the first place. We should play d the whole time or none at all. I don’t want to see such half assed effort when we could be up on them and use our depth to kill em by the end.

We should put pour on our defense the whole game from now on.

We just can’t afford to let these teams get up on us like they do almost every game. I’m sick of having to watch us try to mount an assault on a lead because we didn’t play as hard of defense as we could have in the first half.

Not just free throw shooting

We were 38.6% from the field and 26.7% from three. That just won’t cut it.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

by Caradoc on Jan 30, 2010 5:53 PM CST reply actions

Free throw shooting aside...

this team goes only as far as Rick Barnes will take it. He’s gotta step up and get one of his teams to meet or exceed expectations for once. We are slowly but surely developing a tradition of overachieving in recruiting and during the regular season and underachieving in the postseason.

Then we don't get far. Rick has shown in the last 4 games he's not the coach many thought he was.

Is he in their heads? Does he know X and O’s expertly? i dunno. But I know we lose.

Let people have their opinions

And yes I’m questing the man after the last 4 games? Did he forget how to coach? Did the players not execute? I don’t know. But he’s paid the money and he should deliver results. Now 11 years ago. Right now.

I'm not sure why

you can’t criticize coaches anymore? Nobody’s indicting anyone or calling for anybody’s job. Why this knee-jerk reaction to criticism of the coach?

by kellen on Jan 30, 2010 6:04 PM CST up reply actions

I never said anything of the sort.

I was responding to UT2001 who said, knee-jerkedly, that the last 4 games somehow disproved everything that’s happened the last 11 years. I said that this was a ridiculous statement. Barnes isn’t doing anything differently. We’ve hit a bad skid, but Barnes is who he is.

One could argue

that the last four games are in fact an affirmation of the previous 11 years: extremely talented teams underachieving.

by kellen on Jan 30, 2010 6:27 PM CST up reply actions

Perfectly reasonable explanation.

Anyone can think Barnes is a bad coach or a good coach, or have any number of redeemable faults. My only point was that 4 games do not make an 11-year career. That’s all.

by billyzane on Jan 30, 2010 6:31 PM CST up reply actions

just got back from this disaster

this is rick barnes most talented team ever, and they are with a doubt underachieving……my friends, that is all on the coaching. If he doesn’t turn this around, this could be the turning point in his tenure at Texas.

that point sunk in while driving home.

but this is the first time I’ve seen a crowd really grumbling about Barnes…..they were none to happy with him. This team is way to talented to be playing this sloppy was the general theme from the ut fans as they left. I fully expect a lot of heat on him this week from the media and local sports radio stations.

Beginning to think our poor FT shooting is a failure of recruiting

Not a failure of coaching in practice. For some reason Rick has always preferred hard nosed athletes who are solid on D versus sharp shooters (Balbay, Mason, Ward, Wangmene, Ivey, etc). This extends to his recruiting philosophy and distribution of minutes to players on the court. I don’t necessarily disagree as D wins championships (i think), but it is frustrating to watch because…“even i can make a free throw.”

I will not watch another minute of Texas Basketball

until they start playing to their full potential. For how much hype was thrown on this team they are falling way beyond short of it and I am sick of getting pissed over a team that, really is overrated. Ya’ll can call me a bandwagon fan all you want, but this is down right pitiful. In a Conference that is extremely difficult to win on the road this team is struggling just as bad at home, even in the wins. If this team comes out of Stillwater with a win I will die of shock. They are in trouble, have been, and have no clue right now how to right the ship.

Yes this is pitiful and pathetic

Losing does not bother me

it is how you lose. Part of my problem is that I grew up in a family of basketball coaches and I continue to see the same problems and mistakes that is plaguing this team. I am yelling at the t.v. and I am tired of it. I know bad games happen and it is part of sports, but honestly this team really has not played an overall good game in a long time and I am tired of the same mistakes, I am really starting to question Rick Barnes ability as a coach.

Barnes has struggled with out a good scoring PG

Dogus is great don’t get me wrong, but when Texas needs a big shot James takes it.

It used to be Augustin and TJ that took those shots. The offense has struggled for that reason alone.

Too much fouling

Our D was excellent in the second half till we started sending them to the line

by HornsUpInLA on Jan 30, 2010 6:09 PM CST up reply actions

Not specifically this game

but I’ve seen some poor off the ball fundamentals such as poor D of the low post pass and inability to get through off the ball screens.

Confusion over tempo and style of play

Trying to play too fast and end up playin pressure D that is a gimic at times instead of fundamental…

Also aside from post players the team is very young. Unlike when we had Royal, Brandon, and Thomas not a lot of time together to establish chemistry on defense.

I think we’d be better going to more of a sagging man with on the ball pressure, that way help is already there. Force teams to rely on jumpshots.

by HornsUpInLA on Jan 30, 2010 6:14 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with this

The defense was much improved from the last couple games including Tech. Now Barnes will have to work on the offense.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 30, 2010 6:23 PM CST up reply actions

Its the same thing kinda with GD

Bash the offense, but if you look at points per game he is always up there near the top of the big 12 and top 30 in the country.

Additionally

Tough to remember a time when it was easier to get to the hole against Texas

All it takes is getting past the initial pressure and the spacing on D is too stretched to stop the penetration

Does seem that way not that you mention it. We do seem to make up for it with blocks though

but probably should never let them get that deep most of the time

by UT2001 on Jan 30, 2010 6:19 PM CST up reply actions

That is one of the biggest problems I see with the defense.

Pittman looks like he is trying to make a highlite reel every time he is on d. He lets someone past him and then comes and tries to make a block from behind. If Pittman would just get in front of his man and put a hand up when his man has the ball, that would cut half of the points this team is giving up in the paint. Pittman gets 5-6 blocks a game, but they give up 30+ points in the paint. We are going to find out how good of a coach Barnes really is.

I think we miss that chip on our shoulder

We went from Rugged to Confident (UNC, MSU) to Overconfident to Confused (UCONN)

Mainly we just look unpolished, in some of the ways we did at the beginning of the year but there is no longer this NEVER BACK DOWN attitude that I felt like we had early in the year.

by HornsUpInLA on Jan 30, 2010 6:32 PM CST reply actions

ust back from the game, observation’s from the game

• The obvious, we lost because of free throws
• Lucas is a compete disaster at the point
• Jordan Hamilton looked like a fish out of water in the game
• James was good but gave away points on some really bad passes
• Rotation
o (7)Balbay, Mason, J’Covan, Bradley, Pittman, James, Johnson
        o Wagmane when needed
o Lucas as a shooting specialist when needed
o Hamilton when you are desperate
• This is the 2009 team with Abrams for Bradley trade + J’Covan
• Barnes is not getting the most out of a team with 3 Five Stars and 6 Four stars and a team with three starting seniors and a Junior
• No help side defense
• Seems to be little team specific game plan…I think we are completely out scouted and X and O
