This one's entirely on the coaching staff

1) No meaningful snaps for your back-up all year, for no reasons at all, when half the UT community had been screaming for it.

2) Once you do put the back-up in, you give him absolutely no chance to succeed. If they had continued the game-plan that they had designed for Colt, sure GG was going to make a few mistakes, but there was at least a small chance we’d maintain momentum. By calling no real plays for 4 straight possessions, and giving Alabama all the momentum, we had NO chance.

I HATE I HATE I HATE these offensive coaches.

Actually been pretty impressed with GG

both of his first two drives were ended by receiver errors
Buckner had a first and Malcolm had a touchdown and both dropped catchable balls from GG

by GGoffense on Jan 7, 2010 9:13 PM CST up reply actions

Yes receivers were at fault but both times he threw missles. And he also had 1 forgivable and 1 unforgivable TO.

Gilbert

But it’s a test for both Muschamp and Gilbert. Do we have a chance?

by hornprof on Jan 7, 2010 9:13 PM CST reply actions

Coach Boom had better shape up the defense

GD…well, he needs to put Gilbert in a position to do ANYTHING positive. That’s not a very high bar, but damn.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 7, 2010 9:13 PM CST reply actions

The defense is doing as well as they can against an incredibly talented back. That’s why he won the Heisman. What concerns me is the time the D is on the field. They will just tire with Ingram beating them down on every run.

by dimecoverage on Jan 7, 2010 9:15 PM CST up reply actions

As well as they can?

Is that what you call almost 10 yards every touch? Or a 49yd. run to Richardson?

I think Boom’s boys could do better than that.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 7, 2010 9:17 PM CST up reply actions

Gilbert

You could see the emotion and tears in his eyes. His teammates need to build him up at halftime. He can do this.

And the receivers need to step up and give him some damn help.

by dimecoverage on Jan 7, 2010 9:13 PM CST reply actions

Absolutely

Malcolm whiffed, big time. I put 14pts. out of the 21pt. difference on him.

This is not on GD...

GG is young, this is his very first real action of the season…against the Bama D.

Not the same, but there is at least a string of similarity. Ohio State lost their first round NFL talent Ted Ginn on the opening kickoff. McCoy means exponentially more to Texas than Ginn did, but with him gone the Buckeyes couldn’t get past the Florida Press and ended up getting blown the hell out.

I might be hopelessly confident, but I have faith. Whether Colt comes back or not, I think if we can keep opening up the playbook, make some plays on offense (looking at YOU WRs), and get our stops when we need them we can have a shot.

Start gaining some confidence with this 1st drive. We get the ball back to start, lets go!

Horrible Coaching, Tackling

Our defense is acting like they’ve never been taught to tackle correctly. Arm tackling, grabbing at feet, flailing about, trying to dive at the ball carrier with a shoulder. Seriously, it’s like a bunch of 10 year old epileptics out there trying to play defense.

Our coaches are pissing themselves and cowering in fear and confusion. I don’t care how awesome Gilbert was in HS, this is Texas vs. Bama in the NC. I don’t care if they have to put an offensive lineman in at quarterback, the coaches need to get somebody in there who can make plays!

by mrh079 on Jan 7, 2010 9:28 PM CST reply actions

Even though I'm a KU fan, I feel for you guys and for Colt right now

But you aren’t out of this yet. Bama still can’t pass so if Muschamp can figure out how to hamper the run a bit in the second half you have a shot. Gilbert is going to have to come back swinging, but I’m guessing half time is a giant pump up session right now. Theres a reason they play two halves.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 7, 2010 9:37 PM CST up reply actions

Because McCoy plays for the Longhorns?

The guy that won 44 games? The guy that caused Jevan Snead to transfer? The guy that is the reason you haven’t needed a QB for 3 years and couldn’t get one for the same amount of time?

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 7, 2010 9:38 PM CST up reply actions

Wow.

Anyone who thinks you can get by with a star QB and no skilled backups is a moron. And apparently was in a coma when we lost McCoy to K-State (and he was out of whack for almost 2 years).

by mrh079 on Jan 7, 2010 9:39 PM CST up reply actions

That Gilbert’s not playing as well as McCoy might have?

Okay, point taken.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 7, 2010 9:40 PM CST up reply actions

My point is . . .

. . . that GG is obviously not prepared, and that falls squarely on the shoulders of coaches who didn’t prepare adequately. A better backup should have been in place. And to continue to use GG is moronic.

by mrh079 on Jan 7, 2010 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

I'm saying you can't get good backups when you have an entrenched starter for several years

Thats why Jevan Snead left, its why you couldn’t get any good QB recruits till this year

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 7, 2010 9:42 PM CST up reply actions

He's a true freshman

It’s questionable whether even a seasoned senior, as we saw with Tebow, Crompton, and some others, would be ready for a game against a very good defense.

It only betrays your ignorance when you imply that Gilbert damn well should’ve been.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 7, 2010 9:44 PM CST up reply actions

Because nobody plans

For their starting QB to get hurt. That’s just a fact of life in college football.

Alabama would have been similarly screwed if McElroy had been hurt in their first series of the game.

This situation is what it is. You’ve got a choice as a fan.

Either bitch and moan, or get behind your guy.

No one to blame but ourselves....

Sure Colt got knocked out. That end of half TO really killed us. I think we still might have won if if we didnt give that turnover. Garrret gilbert showed some bright spots, but i feel very uneasy if he started next year. Bama fans should be thanking Texas not there own team. They were worse than us, we shot ourelves in the foot

Agree

with most but I feel pretty confident about Gilbert next year. That wasnt a bad defense he played against and outside of a couple plays, I thought he did a great job considering the circumstances.

He was thrust into the biggest game of the year, under the worst possible circumstances, against #1 and he had his team within reach of winning the MNC.

From a Bama Fan

I have watched the forums all night and I must say, the state of Texas has some excellent fans.

I was very impressed by your team as well. I have always grown up loving to hate the Big 12 but you are a classy team and fought a great battle. Your backup was FANTASTIC for the settings.

Saban is a dick. A machine really that just grinds it out and up until the score, which I just saw as moving the clock more, and then Greg doing the horn was unneeded and tarnished an enjoyable game.

And hey, Colt had a great season and while he should have gotten it last year, that young man has a great future! Had you had him all game it may have been different, had we had Ingram all game we can say the same.

Great game, UT. Know that not all Bama fans are raging lunatics and assholes.

Ya'll are a little ridiculous

I was watching to enjoy a good game, but this classless accusations? If you can’t stop them when you know they’re going to run, they will score. It wasn’t late enough clock wise to kneel down, still 2 minutes + left. As for Horns Down, its a hand symbol. Get over it. Both teams played an excellent ball game, and that Gilbert kid’s going to bring the Longhorns back to the title game. Colt getting hurt sucks.

by Branta on Jan 7, 2010 11:25 PM CST reply actions

There was ONE MINUTE LEFT

Second down. Texas had one timeout. Go blow.

In-VINCE-able.

by iamjackburton on Jan 7, 2010 11:27 PM CST up reply actions

By the end of the drive, yes

But that drive started with nearly 3 minutes on the clock. 1 time out or not 3 kneels and a punt is not going to run out the clock in that situation. Plus, if you’re a so called Longhorns fan, you should still believe your team can win it in 2 minutes or at least tie. TD, onside, FG and its OT. Its not impossible, improbable though. I don’t see a problem with it from an outsiders perspective.

by Branta on Jan 7, 2010 11:29 PM CST up reply actions

There was 47 seconds left

When Bama scored. That was on 2nd down. You guys could have easily taken a knee and chose not to. It was running up the score, pure and simple. And this is coming from a fan that isn’t exactly heartbroken that the bane of Nebraska’s existence went down in a gutwrenching fashion tonight.

For that, I give your coach the stamp of “classless.”

by dubhookzem on Jan 7, 2010 11:51 PM CST up reply actions

wish we had a couple of things...

i’m honestly not too upset. here’s what i saw:

i give these kids high marks for not giving up and fighting ‘bama until the end. well, most of ’em. i counted six dropped passes that were catchable, and that may be short. the entire receiving corps should be sat down and their jobs given to others that can produce when it’s important

33 seconds left in the half, and we’re behind 17-6. you either a) take a knee twice and be happy to go to the locker room (my choice), or b) you’ve got two chances to heave the ball forty yards downfield and hope for the best. the texas play caller calls a sweep. that’s okay. then calls a time out. huh? WTF? and then he calls a shovel pass to the middle of the field. against a defensive line that’s stuffed it up our ass for two quarters. and we give up a pointless touchdown with 3 seconds left in the half. and we’re fighting that score the rest of the game

we come out and take charge of the game, and outscore ‘bama 14 points in the second half. but we’re still behind. because of that dumbass call at the end of the half. it’s breaking our backs. so we still have to roll the dice, and we can’t do it one more time. the texas offensive coordinator, who called this crap at the end of the half, should be fired. sorry, but i have no pity for failure. texas has been the worst at managing the last two minutes of a half this year that i’ve ever seen in my life. yes, i could do it better. this guy needs to be fired. it almost cost us the nebraska game. it did cost us the championship game

’bama is the best team in college football. scoreboard said so. all my respect to them

my last two thoughts: apparently, it’s okay to commit defensive pass interference against texas. it happened a lot. a whole lot

and i gained a lot of respect for ‘bama tonight. i thought saban’s remarks, both at the half at the end of the game, were very respectful. and the kid that intercepted the pass with less than two minutes to go simply fell down. these are class acts. you won’t see that from ocho-what’shisface or any NFL player or coach. they have no class. i grew up in texas, and i really wanted to win this game, and i have a lot of respect for ’bama tonight

by smokeman on Jan 7, 2010 11:57 PM CST reply actions

Nice reasonable post.

I’m proud of our guys – fought back and came very close. I think they earned the respect of the nation, too. And certainly all of the sports bloggers, commentators, etc.

I don’t really respect Bama. I was feeling generous until they showed some classless antics at the end. Even without that, they won by default. A win is a win, sure, but even Saban knew that his team didn’t perform up to what everyone thought (and so tried to pile on points). Given our mistakes and the loss of McCoy, they should’ve creamed us! Instead, they almost lost.

by mrh079 on Jan 8, 2010 12:06 AM CST up reply actions

I don't have respect for Saban or McElroy

Saban didn’t take a knee to run out the clock in the victory formation, because he didn’t want the history books to show how close he was to losing to a Freshman backup QB.

And McElroy… First, I’m not too upset with the upside down horns at the end of the game, one in which he personal was dominated, because all other teams are jealous that we are the only team with a cool hand sign. That, and he hates on Texas like almost every body else in the nation.

Second, the way he was so excited when they ran up the score at the end of the game, a game again inwhich he was one of the worst players and totally shut down, shows he has no class like his coach.

And then in an after game interview, was talking about how disappointing that they came out flat in the second half. Please McElroy, don’t try to be like your coach or you will never be happy in life. Or have any class. God love ya, but I don’t repect ya.

by erndoggiedog on Jan 8, 2010 12:06 AM CST reply actions

i agree, somewhat...

yeah, i didn’t think ‘bama needed to score at the end. they should have taken a knee. but don’t blame the kids, blame the coach. you can’t tell the kids not to try their hardest. the coach has to tell them to sit on the ball. i thought this was a poor point for saban. but i thought his remarks at the end of the half were quite classy. i was surprised to see ‘bama not sit on the ball at the end, but it didn’t matter.

we still need a new offensive coordinator. and a new receiving corps

by smokeman on Jan 8, 2010 12:22 AM CST up reply actions

You are right about our coordinator and receivers

Greg Davis isn’t the worst OC out there, but it has become painfully obvious that he is also not one of the best. For every good play call, and we had a lot to get back into it, there is one that is just boneheaded. That shovel pass sealed the game for us against a great team. 18 points was just too much. I know it is usually a safe pass, but with your Frosh QB getting beat up and 10 seconds on the clock, just go into halftime and figure it all out.
I hope our incoming freshman will pain out quick and not drop EVERY FRECKIN BALL. Just terrible.
