Poll: Retired Number for Colt?
Should Colt McCoy's #12 be retired? He is clearly an all-time great Longhorn, but he lacks a Heisman and a National Championship. The current retired numbers are Vince Young's 10, Earl Campbell's 20, Bobby Layne's 22, Ricky Williams' 34, and Tommy Nobis' 60. In my opinion, Colt is in the same conversation as those guys and definitely earned a retired number. He is officially eligible since he won the Maxwell Award and two Walter Camp Awards. What do y'all think?

No.
Great player, all-time player, but not quite transcendent. Besides, we’ve got to keep some QB numbers available for the future.
I say a MNC is the prerequisite. He stays in and wins Thursday? No doubt at all.
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
I understand your point
but Colt has done EVERYTHING he could for this program and has always represented Texas in a manner we are all proud of. His accomplishments are too long to name, although the only knock on him is the absence of a National Championship, which he would have delivered had he not been knocked out on the 5th offensive play (not his fault). I thought the other night and no matter how big a fan of Texas we are or how upset we may be, we will NEVER feel the hurt and disappointment that Colt feels. He has NOTHING to feel ashamed for and I look forward to the day (if not yet) when he realizes it was nothing he could do.
It Ain't Easy, But It's Worth It.
You're exactly right
but he does not deserve to have his number retired at this point. Somewhere down the road? Possibly and probably.
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
No.
This kind of thing should not be done for a year (or 3, or 5 years) . . . Give the moment time to settle into context.
Plus, too much of this stuff is done.
I fully expect trip-digit number — “That’s No. 127, Jasper Rodriguez from San Angelo, Texas. Heck of a story with him, Brent. Details after this play.” It’ll happen. Hope I live that long. And I fully expect to!!!!!!
No
IMO, need to be largely responsible for a National Championship (VY), and/or win the Heisman (Earl & Ricky) to have your # retired. Defensive players (Nobis) can get a pass for this bc it’s nearly impossible for them to do those 2 things. That being said, IMO it is questionable that Layne’s # was retired. Colt is arguably the best qb to play college football, but if we start retiring everyone’s number, where does it end? If Colt gets a retired #, so should James Street, Duke Carlisle, The Major, and on and on and on…
No, need championships
but it won’t affect the legend that is Colt McCoy. Everyone thinks highly of Major, even though his # wasn’t retired. Same goes for Colt. He will not be forgotten for a long, long time. He has a lot to be proud of, not to mention he’s an all-time winner in the record books.

Hmmm....
Maxwell Award and two Walter Camp Awards ( both National Player of the Year awards, like the Heisman ).
Most Accurate QB in NCAA history
Winningest QB in NCAA history
That’s a pretty good resume. Biggest scar is Big 12 titles and NC titles, or lack thereof.
Williams is retired without a MNC, as is Durant's.
McCoy is the all-time leader in wins in the NCAA.
Plus, lets retire #12 and say its for Earl Thomas and Colt McCoy.

I voted no
But that’s a great point. The all-time wins, while belonging to an individual, speaks as much to the team. This should be reason enough. But give it a few years.
An emphatic YES!!
As previously mentioned, he has set not only UT records, but NCAA records as well. It is certainly not Colt’s fault that the D could not stop TT last season. He also cannot add cognitive reinforcement to the Big XII brass that used the moronic tiebreaker with OU. In essence, last season’s complete screwover coupled with only seeing 5 plays on Thursday makes me believe Colt should be the last Horn to don #12. Thank you Colt McCoy: for your leadership, your faith, and the fact that you make not only kids want to emulate your ethics, but adults as well.

Hell Yes
I was debating starting a thread on this myself but I’m apparantly too lazy. I would be very pleased to see that Colt and Earl were the last two to wear the number 12. The kid gave up everything but his faith for this program why would we not give him this ultimate honor?
I even named my son Kolt.

This, alas, also falls into the "What if" category
God I wish with all my being that I could justify it in my heart to say “Yes!!, Colt’s number should be retired”. But, my ability to have that thought in clear conscience is inseparably tied to opportunities lost.
No. Alas, no.
"Please God, Send us a Stable of Running Backs!"
Not yes, but HELL YES!!!!
Shit, if you’re going to retire Kevin Durant’s number, this is a no-brainer.
I've been fuelin' my dreams eatin' greens and beans.
Don't Compare Texas' Football Heritage with It's Basketball Heritage
I’m not trying to be critical of your post, but you just can’t compare the standards and tradition of the Texas Basketball programto the Texas Football program. Apples and Oranges.
IMHO, Texas Football is in such an esteemed, lofty place in the college sports pantheon that only the ‘greatest of gods’ should be awarded this honor. A good point of comparison: Look at Dallas’ ring of honor and compare it with the Arizona Cardinal’s ring of Honor. It’s almost a joke by comparison.
"Please God, Send us a Stable of Running Backs!"
Well IMHO Colt has earned his place, without question.

Let me know if I missed something. The only argument is that he did not win a National Championship, but that is not enough to keep his name off the stadium wall, IMHO. He is one of the best players in Texas Longhorn Football history.

I understand the stats. and I want him in too...
but you can’t put him in before James Street who actually won a National Championship. Maybe with time, yes, but for now, I can’t see it (and trust me, I want to see it, but with a clear conscience, and an objective view of all others who have preceded him.
"Please God, Send us a Stable of Running Backs!"
I said, No, due to no Heisman or NC, but 16th Longhorn post changed my mind
Colt, definitely deserving of a Retired Number….Mea culpa, how could i have been so wrong. His list of accomplishments and the way he went about his business says YES. I would be proud to have him recognized that way..he deserves it.
Hooking em to a Another National Championship.
Without Question
Classy representive, academic and football All American – 2 time winner of almost all QB awards, winningest QB of all time? WTF are you no voters thinking????
Yikes, a little bit of a brush back pitch on that one son
Look, we ALL love, respect and admire Colt, and his many accomplishments, but we “no voters” are allowed to feel what we feel if we think he came within one short step of the summit. Show some courtesy to your brethern, and try to view both sides of the debate.
"Please God, Send us a Stable of Running Backs!"
NO
I think Texas will retire his number, but they shouldn’t. He is a great player, but he needed that championship.
That's what I think
He’s super classy and has a million awards (see above), but he’s missing that national championship. I know Ricky and Earl didn’t win the NC, either, but got their numbers retired. Not for Colt, in my opinion.
NOOOOOO!!!
We’re going to run out of numbers. Just make it a tradition that really special QBs get to wear #12, like we used to do with #60 and LBs.
Transcendent players are the only ones who should get their numbers retired. With the offensive system we have in place, the D we could field over the next few years under Muschamp, and the apparent skill of incoming QBs, I’d hate to get caught in a pattern of retiring every good QBs #….just my thoughts.
hmm
I think you are right about it. We could just make wearing number 12 for special QB’s. With that being said, how are we going to run out of numbers? I never get that…

Again, no.
Major Applewhite’s stats were amazing, and he owned pretty much every Texas qb record, and I bet everyone here would have been screaming for his # to be retired after his final game in 2001….then came Colt. McCoy broke almost every record Major owned. What if Gilbert comes along and 1) breaks all of Colt’s records 2) wins 2-3 Big XII titles and 3) possibly a national title? We would look foolish if we just retired every great player’s #. Colt’s UT career ended 4 days ago, let’s not vault him into sainthood just yet. Heck, it took us 40-something years to retire Nobis’ number. Let the dust settle a while and, maybe 10-15 years down the road, it’ll make more sense to retire #12. Don’t think I would ever think that’s a good idea, but who knows. The lessons Colt taught everyone through his play and, more importantly, his character will live on forever anyway.
Yes, but Colt has a plethora of national records as well...
And it (retiring numbers) should be about more than MNCs and Heismans. It should be about his leadership, character, how he represents the University of Texas, as well as his on the field performance. What an amazing athlete and human being…it was a privilege to watch him play. Seriously.

I Voted Yes, But Changed My Mind....
Colt has and continues to represent everything great about the student athlete and the program at large. While he never got his crystal football, he holds records that will more than likely never be broken and is, IMHO, the greatest asset the program has ever produced. Number retiring is for great performances like VY, wearing 12 at QB should be a tremendous honor and burden for future players, much like 4, or 8, really.
apparently not. Since Buckner wears it

I say "yes"
Oh and I think you missed the fact that during the MNC Game they announced that Colt had won the “AT&T Player of the Year” honor too.
Play like you mean it...
eventually
yes, but not yet. all of the awards combined with all time wins should get 12 in the stadium. just not yet.
didn’t it take 3 years or something to retire #10?
combine everything colt did the last 4 years and sprinkle in the forgotten fact that he came in directly after arguably the greatest longhorn to ever live….we should hope to be marginally as lucky with GG.
