Texas RB Tre' Newton Giving Up Football
Over the last two seasons, Longhorn running Tre' Newton has struggled with injuries, including a hip pointer this season. A bigger concern, however, has been his struggles with concussions.
Influenced by all the recent news about the long-term dangers of head injuries incurred from playing football, Newton will no longer continue playing football at Texas. It was a decision that was made despite Newton still having the desire to play -- this was a medical decision. Newton will remain on scholarship and involved with the football team as a mentor to the young running backs.
Mack Brown said at his Monday press conference that Cody Johnson will probably start against Florida Atlantic with Fozzy Whittaker continuing to struggle with a re-occuring stinger.

I love our team with every last cardiac myocyte of my heart,
but I think this is influenced more by something going on in the locker room. Something he doesn’t want to deal with for another two years. He’s not a great NFL prospect, so if I were in his position, I’d take my high-quality University of Texas at Austin degree and live happy and in good health. For him, the risks of staying on the team outweigh the benefits. I’m sure he thought a lot about this, because many of us would sell our souls to don the burnt orange (and especially the all white) uniforms, but we should all respect his decision as the best choice for him. Good luck in all your endeavors, Tre’. Hook ’em.

Well there we go.
Correction made to the post. Sorry I have an opinion…it’s not like you offered one.

Is that supposed to be an insult? Also, I did, it was my opinion that your opinion was wrong.
And it didn’t even involve calling out an injured player for locker room issues!
by BoddickerIsClutch on Nov 15, 2010 12:45 PM CST up reply actions
Come on man, not supposed to be an insult.
I was just wondering why you called me out. I wasn’t “calling out” Newton…I blatantly stated that the “risks of staying on the team outweigh the benefits”. The combination of him being injured with the future addition of Malcolm Brown makes this decision a no-brainer (no pun intended). Before the amendment stating that he still had a desire to play and it was a medical decision, it was a possibility (and my opinion) that the turmoil going on with our team on and off the field could have played a factor in his decision. All in all, this was his decision, and like I said earlier, I’m respecting it and everyone should too. I’m thankful for his commitment to our team for the past few years.

Amen
I have noticed that we all seem to be on edge because of this miserable season. This year has probably been even less fun for the players than it has been the fans and BONers.

Thanks for the good times Tre
Best of luck to you and loved watching you play.
The recent news about Jim McMahon (sp?) having memory related to the numerous hits he took together with all the other news on the matter makes this a pretty wise decision.

Question for GBR
Any chance Shead or Whaley get in a game? I know the rap on Whaley, but why not give him a shot. CJ is hurt. You could tell in the end of the game that he was limping like crazy. Why not see what the freshman Shead can do also?
Whaley is cemented at H-Back
it seems and Shead and Hill are both redshirting. What was once an overload at the position quickly looks thin as paper.

Hey Coach E, you are a good substitute
Thanks. It is alarming how we now have 3 true freshman on the O-line, no Vondrell McGee or Newton at RB and Fozzy is always a sprained ankle away from ending his career. Cody Johnson is hurt too. He was limping like crazy at the end of the game. We also have no second DT (which has really hurt us), and we are going to the bench at CB. What a mess.
But, that should help in not losing the great recruiting class. They all truly have the opportunity to get playing time.
I think this season is a good example to recruits
about how quickly a depth chart can clear out.
by Wescott Eberts (GoBR) on Nov 15, 2010 4:34 PM CST up reply actions
Is that due to recruiting, conditioning, or just bad luck?
"Only angry people win football games." --DKR
I don't understand why they redshirted so many R Backs.
Seems like we could have used one of them this year. With M. Brown coming in, when are any of them ever going to play?
Jeremy Hills
requested to redshirt and I think they never thought Shead would see the field with Newton, Johnson and Fozzy there was no need for him to play.
"I want to be remembered as the guy who gave his all whenever he was on the field."

Isn't there someone named Monroe that we've tried out at tailback?
I think he’s carrying the ball for about 10 yards per attempt. I’m sure there’s a really good reason he only returns kickoffs though.
"Well, a guy did a Horns down to him. You just shouldn’t do that."
he lost the GD playbook and is still looking for it...
Oh and he can’t stand in frot of someone long enough for them to run into him
Don't think they burn the shirt on Shead
I think Whaley probably gets a chance this week, as I think I saw somewhere that he was working at running back some last week because of all the injuries. The coaches seem intent on not playing DJ Monroe.

Best Mack quote today
“…Florida Atlantic, unlike us, have won their last three games….”
Doesn't take much imagination to know what Mack will say
1. Congratulation of OSU. They are a really great team…
2. We played hard. Our players and staff haven’t given up.
3. We cut down on penalties.
4. We cut down on turn-overs.
5. GG continues to make progress.
6. We set a record for fair catches (and didn’t drop a one).
7. We won the fourth quarter again. We own the fourth quarter.
8. FAU is a better team than many think. We are not taking them lightly.
9. We need the fans to come early, stay late, wear orange, and be loud.
10. We can still make it to a bowl.
"Only angry people win football games." --DKR
Tough deal for Tre
I feared that might be coming . . . repeated concussions is a loud alarm bell that it’s time to move on.
Even healthy, though, I think Shead and MB-1 joining Whittaker and Cody is plenty of depth — and hopefully quality — at the position.
So sorry to hear about Tre...
…I wish you the best. We have been hard on you, but we all love you and want the best for you in life. Hook ’em!

no way they burn the redshirt on Shead or Hills
with 2 games left and the season we’re having… they’d put Whaley or Roberson in there first. Maybe even Berryhill. At least I hope.
Tre, we'll miss you.
Bright future, tough to hear. It’s the way this season has gone. Injuries have devistated the defense and have hurt the offense also. I have never seen a team suffer this much from injuries in one season.

It's a miracle GG hasn't been injured given some of those hits he's taken.
"Only angry people win football games." --DKR
Give it time, give it time.
GG’s destined for Troy Aikmen caliber concussions, and probably a torn ACL.
Texas is neither southern nor western. Texas is Texas - Senator William Blakley
Hey. That’s weird that Aikman sustained about 400 concussions, but he sounds completely fine these days with Joe Buck.
Maybe we should have kept Aikman in there for all those games, instead of Babe Laufenberg.
Aikman is the exception to the rule...
Most end up like Terry Bradshaw, where anything can come out their mouths, including slobber.
Aikman is also still relatively young.
He will be 44 this Sunday.

Mack would probably keep him in there anyway
After the brain bashing GG took against KState and Mack refusing to remove him in the 4th Quarter, I’ve concluded Mack could give less than a shit about his player’s health.

That's an odd conclusion to draw
It’s nonsense. GG was getting little protection. His replacement would’ve faced the same. You might have a point if mack had had the option of not putting a QB in the game at all, but unless you’re implying mack should’ve just called for a punt on first down, you’re drawing a ridiculous and immature conclusion.

just didn’t want anyone who read your post here out of context to think I’m in the Mack blasting camp.
Is the world just black and white through your eyes?
Mack either has to be the king of the world or a worthless has-been who doesn’t care if his players get injured, according to you. It would be a lot more impressive if you’d actually address the point, which is that you’re drawing a faulty conclusion with no basis in fact. Grow up.

Considering how much we've used the

I think it's probably too late
unless the staff wants to start pursuing someone who is committed. And plus, the staff is going to honor Newton’s scholarship, so his retirement doesn’t open up a spot in terms of scholarships.

If he is a medical scholarship
Does that still count in the 85 total limit? I thought the medical scholarship leaves him out of the 85 number limit.
Yeah you are right, actually.
If Newton applies for and receives a medical hardship scholarship, he won’t count against the 85. Man, not on my game today.

Would anybody be intersested if Texas offered?
Sims? B. Williams? anybody?
Late breaking news...
…the entire Texas Longhorns coaching staff has come down with a case of concussions and will not be able to participate in the remainder of this season.
Greg Davis was quoted as saying, “I’m pretty darned sure I have had a concussion most of the past 4 years. Fact is, most days I hang out in Starbucks offering to make someone a foofy coffee drink because I think I work there. Next thing I know, I’m sitting waaaayyyy up high, with a bunch of diagrams in my hands, headset over my ears, staring at thousands of people surrounding a field. It kind of sounds like a party, and I always liked those little bubble blowing gizmos I had as a kid, so I always yell out ‘Bubbles! Gimme some Bubbles!!’ Then people start running around on the field. It’s kinda cool.”
(I know, I know…bad form. I truly am sad for Tre, but have incredible respect that he has made this decision. With the legacy of his father in professional football, and Tre’s obvious talent, he could be a star. I’m sure this was a tough decision. It gives me hope that a young man so talented at this level can remember to put his own health and longevity first.)
But it would be an interesting way out of the season for the rest of them…at least GD.

That Whaley may actually see some reps at RB this weekend. Too bad it’s against Florida Atlantic so any success he has will be negated because of that.
I wouldn't say "negated"
If he can do what he’s supposed to do with the football in his hands, that at least forms the basis for carries against Aggie, and perhaps another look as a solution at the RB position.

Which would give the team a lot of practice time over the following few weeks to work on some things, like integrating Whaley, letting some linemen heal up, and developing a one-game plan to build on the two consecutive wins.

GBR,
Do the Horns have any more interest in LaFrederick (Fred) Ford of Kirbyville? Watch his highlights. In my humble opinion, he is as good as Brandon Williams. Major Applewhite attended one of Fred’s games in 2009.
If he gets to play Brownwood in the 3A playoffs that game will be a classic.
