Our resurgent Gazelles were seeded overall #9 in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. They will host the 1st and 2nd rounds next weekend at Gregory Gym along with the regional rounds.
The opening round game will be against UTSA on Friday December 3 with time TBA. The Roadrunners are 22-11 and were granted the automatic bid for the Southland Conference by winning the conference tourney. UCLA and American will play in the other first round game.
The second round game against UCLA will be a barn burner. UCLA is ranked #9 in the coaches poll and Texas is ranked #8. This draw has shades of 2006 when #7 Hawaii was sent to Austin and played #8 Texas in the second round. Hawaii upset the Horns that year for the trip to Penn State.
# 1 Florida, #16 Purdue and #8 Illinois are the seeded teams in the Austin regional. If Texas can get past UCLA, this draw is a really good one for the Horns. They will likely face two teams, Florida and Illinois, who beat them back in September. Illinois has had injuries and has limped along to end the regular season. Texas lost to Florida in Gainesville 13-15 in the fifth set. They played that match with a lineup they had never practiced with and only had a walkthrough of in the hotel prior to departing for the arena. Needless to say, that is one rematch I would love to see.
I can't stress enough how badly the team needs a packed house. It will be the difference between a Final Four berth and an exit as early as the 2nd round. Just ask Nebraska how hard it is to play in front of 4,000+ screaming Texas volleyball fans!
