  • Some major changes offensively, especially at wide receiver, where James Kirkendoll is now the starter at split end, displacing Malcolm Williams. On the other side of the formation, that leaves John Chiles at the starter in the slot, backed up by Marquise Goodwin, while Mike Davis and DeSean Hales are co-starters at flanker.
  • EBS is no longer on the depth chart for reasons that haven't been made apparent by the coaching staff, so Barrett Matthews is the starter at tight end, backed up by Dominique Jones. Ryan Roberson is now the starter at the never-used H-back position, passing Chris Whaley there.
  • Garrett Porter and Paden Kelley both back up two positions along the offensive line. Mark Buchanan, who was listed on the depth chart for much of the year but never played, is no longer listed.
  • Defensively, the big change is that Dravannti Johnson is back at the Buck position, passing Eddie Jones, a surprising demotion for the senior. The coaches must not have been happy with his play the last several weeks because Johnson hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire either.
  • Emmanuel Acho is the starter at both the strongside position and in the middle. He would likely give way to Dustin Earnest in the middle if the Longhorns need to play three linebackers, which they will not have to do against either Oklahoma State or Texas A&M. Not sure if FAU is spread or not.
  • Kenny Vaccaro is the new starter in the nickel, with Aaron Williams moving to right cornerback, backed up by Carrington Byndom, likely the first player off the bench if Vaccaro moves to left safety during the game, where he is a co-starter with Christian Scott.
  • Adrian Phillips remains the punt returner, with Darius White making his first appearance on the depth chart there as a co-backup.

I see the coaches haven't lost their sense of humor

“Fullback” and “H-back” are still listed as actual positions on this team.

Correction?
Garrett Porter and Paden Kelley both back up two positions along the offensive line, with Trey Hopkins surprisingly not showing up on the depth chart.

Isn’t he at Left Guard?

Yes, he appears to be.

At the presser, Mack noted that three freshmen played in the OL but didn’t comment on how well they played, how they graded out, anything.

A tree full of owls....

You sneak up to the tree and hit it real hard with a baseball bat.
All the owls fly.
Then they all fly back into the tree, a few on different branches.

Certainly sounds like a plan to change the way things are going.

so Barrett Matthews is the starter at tight end, backed up by Dominique Jones.

Dom Jones has one catch on one attempt for a (meaningless) touchdown and looks much bigger than Matthews (who has dropped more balls than he has caught), and Dom is the backup?

Ryan Roberson is now the starter at the never-used H-back position, passing Chris Whaley there.

Is this the same Whaley that was the sure fire, can’t miss recruit, hand picked by Mack Brown himself to be the next great RB at Texas? Now he is behind the FB for a mythical H-back position. Who does Mack hold accountable for that?

I'd like to see DoJo (or to Mavs fans, the 'other' DoJo) start at TE also

He, in the extremely limited sample size we have, looks like he could actually be somewhat of a threat both blocking and receiving.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

Garrett

Is there any indication Garrett will be held accountatble and have to compete for his spot this week? I’m shocked that you don’t try and go with another guy to at least give your team a spark. At this point I wouldn’t think a replacement could do worse. Besides McCoy’s redshirt is already burnt. Why wasn’t Mack this stubborn about replacing Qb’s during the Applewhite v. Simms debacle?

Save Brown first...

Brown wants to save his behind first. The last coach not to get a bowl appearance (and to lose to UCLA) was Mackovic (4 and 7 season). He was forced to retire after that season. Granted Brown has done more and I think he should be okay without a bowl season but…he wants a bowl. Once that is lost…McCoy will start. This has nothing to do with the players at this point. Has everything to do with the typical “no mistakes” + “no risks” offense that has worked for them for 10 years. Even though every one knows what play they will run…not many teams over the years beat them.

You're being all rational and shit

Mack Brown doesn’t roll that way. Mack Brown decides on something and by God Mack Brown is going to ride that decision into the grave, even if it has to do it on GG’s carcass.

People can learn from their mistakes.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Poor Okafor still starting at DT.

He just isn’t big enough and gets thrown to the ground constantly. Baylor and KState ran at him all night and Okafor just got pushed out of the way all day. I think S. Acho would of been a better option at DT.

by cj43 on Nov 8, 2010 2:46 PM CST reply actions

hopefully he will be put back at DE next year

looked at the roster and the incoming recruits at DE and there has GOT to be one or two (depends on if randall comes back, how many we need) that can play a true DT

I really feel bad for this guy

by trueorangeblood on Nov 8, 2010 5:00 PM CST up reply actions

DE is suddenly very thin

And DT is looking like there is at least hope with Desmond Jackson and Quincy Russell coming in, not to mention the large number of bodies already on campus. Okafor needs to move back to DE next season.

Agree...Okafor has taken one for the team

We really needed Howell but the concussion things happen.

by Wrangler86 on Nov 8, 2010 5:22 PM CST up reply actions

Not that it matters...

QB that struggles with accuracy and all WR that can’t finish routes (or even start them without getting pushed around)…it’s not going to matter who starts.

If you can…watch them get man handled off the line. Neb showed everyone the WRs get pushed around easily.

Listing two QBs after GG is such bullshit

Who are you kidding, Mack? PFFT.

The depth chart for QB should look like below:

QB Starter: Garret Gilbert
QB Backup: Forfeit Game

Anybody wonder why we seem to always use a defensive back to return punts

when most defensive backs became defensive backs in the first place because they were fast but couldn’t CATCH anything that flew their way?

Mike Adams was a pretty fair punt returner, as was Eric Metcalf, and neither played defensive back for us. Defensive backs who can return punts are pretty rare in college football. Admittedly, over the years, we’ve had a few DB’s who could do return punts effectively but most defensive backs aren’t really talented when it comes to catching things flying through the air.

Shipley and Cosby weren't DBs either.
