Shannon and Harsin
Do you guys remember 2007 when we were all hoping for Shannon at DC? He ended up staying at Miami as head coach, and we ended with the disaster of McDufff/Akina. Well, fast forward to today, we again have a shot at Shannon which is a very well respected defensive mind. He said to be an excellent recruiter witout the coach in waiting drama. IF we get him, and Harsin for OC along with some decent OL/DL/conditioning coaches, we will be in a great shape IMO. I just feel positive this morning. How do you guys feel? Hook 'Em.

Randy Shannon
I’m ok with him is dc we went aft him instead of muschamp in the first. Place
Shannon has put up some pretty decent defenses over the years.
As in top 10 nearly every year.
Plus he is a good recruiter.
You could do alot worse than that.
Caveat
I hope he does come and excels as DC.
I just hope that if that happens, Texas doesn’t automatically assume he is head coach material a few years later (we have a tendency here to promote/keep folks based on a good-ol-boys mentality).
I think Miami has provided some evidence that he might not be. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have the magnetic fiery personality & leadership which Muschamp had, which was perfect for a HC position.

We do, and hopefully a few winning seasons won't cloud our vision
just like how quickly fans/owners in the NFL (not as bad in NCAAF) can change their sentiment and treatment of a coach… over one season or sometimes even overnight (over a win/loss).
examples: Gruden, Caughlin, and currently Josh McDaniel, Jack DelRio, Jason Garrett, Chizik
None of the above..
Shannon would be a great pick but there are a lot of great coaches who would want these jobs..I hear Major is headed to Florida with Will..Hope it is not true..
Losing Applewhite would be symbolic too, in a bad bad way
Because Muschamp is going for Holgorsen
If Applewhite left too, losing a Texas ex-player/alum would truly be an indictment on this program and Mack’s ability to oversee, compromise/work with, and ultimately retain anyone more intelligent than a yes-man (GD)
Thus that may be another reason for Mack to try to keep Applewhite at this point (i.e. desperation move)

oops
“because Muschamp is going for Holgorsen” was meant to be a reply to the message about AW not leaving, not a reply to my headline

I'd say
DC- Shannon
OC- Major
I think it’s time we hire this guys in a day or two, no reason for us to wait around and let all these rumors impact recruiting. I hear Major plays a key role in Malcolm’s committ to Texas. I doubt any new OC could turn our offense around without a stud RB to work with.
Why Major at OC?
He sucked at Alabama, and I can’t see for the life of me why is he a better option than Harsin? He can remain as a position coach.
In Mack Brown We Trust!
I don't think he sucked at Alabama
I just think that if there’s a transcript for everywhere he’s coached, he’d get an “incomplete” for that year.
Syracuse QBs: D-
Rice OC: A-
’Bama OC: I
Texas RBs: C
He’s earning his stripes, though. I do honestly wish that he would someday become the head coach. Obviously it looked like that would never happen until last night’s news, but now it’s a possibility. The problem is that Major’s probably not going to be ready at the same time Mack’s ready to retire, so it’s a real question as to who would be the right person after Mack.
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

GD and McWhorter were already axed anyway
If the vote is going to include the hypothetical situations like that, why not the more recent one: Muschamp and Harsin/Applewhite
JS from Recruitocosm reports via Twitter....
that Applewhite is staying and is working to keep the 2011 recruiting class together. This is significant, imo, because JS was one of those saying Major was gone last night.
REJOICE!
Mark my words…this is a positive turning point! Mack will do what he does best…manage! What we are witnessing is Longhorn football making a much needed transition into “new-age” CFB that most of the powerhouses have already undergone. I believe that our coaching will finally be on par with recruiting. Out with the over-privileged, complacent, and unmotivated coaches and in with a new batch of hungry/motivated assistants!
I’m going to call it right now….a 11-2 or 12-1 season…perhaps even a BCS appearance. Watching Texas play Nebraska and Oklahoma this year was proof enough that the problem is not with the talent/ability…but coaching!
Expect great things.
i enjoy your optimism
nice perspective. hopefully Mack gets in gear.
