Coaching dream team to be at UF
No surprise that Muschamp will target friend Kirby Smart as his DC, so Texas can forget about that possibility.
and Holgorsen as his OC... the guy Muschamp wanted here at Texas which Mack had crossed off the list last week. I dread the day we face this UF in the Title Game.
Muschamp
Smart
HolgorsenSame staff that could have been at Texas if the coin falls the other way. You put that kind of talent on a coaching staff in the state of Florida that now has inroads to Texas? Scary.

Make what you Will of it, but IMO there were a few worthwhile pieces of insight here among comments,
http://recruitocosm.fantake.com/2010/12/11/muschamp-to-florida-texas-wanders-the-desert-forecast-bleak/
about what really went down, as well as how damaging this will be to recruiting, with at least 3 commits already waivering. Although that is not a surprise, as all the defensive recruits had said they came here to play for Muschamp.
(BBL, time for brunch and a nap now, as this f*cking nightmare kept us from sleeping much last night)

What Muschamp supposedly told his friend
Below is one of the most disturbing comments, originally posted on OB, supposedly from a friend of Muschamp’s. He basically says that Mack went back on his word to retire.
Shortly after Will was designated HCIW, I made a post that was not believed at the time; the Mack Brown coaching time line. I told you in summer 2008 Mack thought he could make a title run with McCoy. I further explained Mack would coach 1 year after that because he did not think it was right to let a first year guy take over with a new QB the year after a championship. The people who bothered to read the post laughed because it sounded absurd. McCoy was coming off a dreadful sophomore year and Chiles was the QB many wanted. I even told you Mack thought Colt was special. Hell, I even laughed at that at the time.
I posted the same info again last December. My tone was more of a "look how it all turned out, looks like Mack was right" kind of post. I predicted, again, that Mack would step down after the 2010 season and Will would coach in 2011. And again, most of you thought I was full of crap.
I can now tell you that Will was the source of the information. We are friends and he is one of the better people I know. To be fair, I don’t think Mack signed a blood oath, It was more of an understanding between men. I can tell you that in the last 2 years, Will has virtually taken over recruiting because both coaches assumed it would be his team.
When Mack went 5-7, his ego would not allow him to step down. He actually said to the staff he would not go out on a losing season. This caused Will some problems. Mack told Will he wanted to "turn things around" and Will thought that seemed like more than a 1 year deal. He was upset and rightfully so. I knew he had reached out to Miami, I was as stunned as everyone else when he got the job at Florida.
Much of what Chip wrote about the staff divisions are dead on. All of it had to do with accountability. The older coaches just were not walking the walk.
We are going to be devastated in recruiting, at least 5 losses maybe more. I think we may take years to recover. But lay this at Mack’s feet, not Will’s. He is a good man who lived up to his word. When Mack kept the keys, what was he supposed to do?

HCIW til 2017 made no sense anyway
In my opinion, the writing was on the wall when Mack cleverly renegotiated his contract again this year (prior to the Title Game!), to get a nearly 50% pay raise, with subsequent annual raises through 2016.
A guy doesn’t do all that hardballing with an intention to walk away within a few months from $5.1 million/yr role as a figurehead (in his case) to go take on more responsibilities as AD and get paid way less.

What was our Board of Regents thinking, or were they??
Recent contracts for Meyer, Stoops, and Saban were only 6, 7, and 8 years, respectively. Our BoR awarded Mack a 10-year contract in 2004, BEFORE Mack had won the Rose Bowl, much less a national championship.
Then they extend it by another 2 years in 2007 during a crap season. Then a nearly 50% raise last season, again before the Title game.
sorry to continue this rage, but I am STILL so pissed right now at the F’ing country club that it is.

“I think we may take years to recover. But lay this at Mack’s feet, not Will’s”
A top DC leaving for a great HC position lay at Mack’s feet? Will left for Florida not Colorado State. Applewhite and Akina leaving would be at Mack’s feet. Mack is the HC a deserves another try at a winning season before retiring. Let’s slow down with the melodrama. But we should expect drama from someone who picked their screen name from a television sitcom.
Save this post and read it in two years.

Don't shoot the messenger
I didn’t write the quote, a friend of Will’s did. You don’t have to read anything on that site, but at least most folks don’t have rose-colored glasses on. and there is no need to resort to personal attacks.
I don’t blame Will for leaving, not Mack for Will leaving. Both men are acting in their own best interest. But the BoR is supposed to act for the best interest of the University, not create naively planned, inflexible situations.

If Mack misled Muschamp about Mack's retirement,
why shouldn’t that be laid at Mack’s feet? Mack, as Geraldine: “The devil made me do it!”

True
that if (and I’m saying IF) Mack really had verbally given Will that timeline, then he should’ve kept his word, or at least promised to step down by 2012.
He should’ve been (1) more honorable to Will on his word, and
(2) less selfish, and done what was best (which some might debate) for the future of the Texas program beyond one year.
Especially if the difference in timeline would only be a year or two from his desire. But instead he chose to try to repair his legacy (some say “ego”), even though most fans see it as still intact despite this season.
at the end of the day
If Florida offers you a HC job and a pay raise, you don’t say no. Even if a date was set for Muschamp to take over in a year or two, it’s still hard to say no. Florida was the exception, if any other job offeres had been brought to Will, I bet he turns them down but Florida is Florida.
good point
and Will spent 10 years in Gainesville. i believe him when he says this was the only that could make him leave. now instead of us having the ‘dream team’ coaching staff, it looks like Florida will.

Florida timing is a fluke
Like the rest of this damn year. 2010 Sucked. We only have 21 more days until it is over and 2011 has got to be better.
Muschamp probably had FL ahead of TX on his dream list and it is just a fluke that Meyer crumbled. I do not blame anyone—it is just unlucky for Texas that this opening happened when it did. It will be interesting to see how he does.
Applewhite is a diffrent story. He is a Longhorn, and if we can’t keep him on staff then we have deep, deep problems. We better be doing everything required to keep MA. If not, this ship is sinking to the bottom.
Coaching Dream team?
Just like Miami heat, stuff looks great on paper but rarely does it work out like that.
Kirby smart and Will are friends but dont you think smart thinks he is just as good as muschamp? Smart will want to be a HC soon and will bolt too, just like major will.
Just like any major program, Will will have a hard time keeping good coaches at UF. Its just the nature of the beast.
Texas will be fine and after a 5-7 season, im glad this coaching staff is being blown up. Its time to start fresh and usher a new age of Texas football success

so funny..
to see many of the same people that saw the longevity of GDGD as proof he wasn’t any good now so upset that our DC is so attractive that he is offered (and accepts) one of the top five HC jobs in the country. Has to be double his already stratospheric salary.
As far as Mack’s “ego” getting in the way of living up to his commitment to WM — yea, so what? Count that as the real long term tragedy of the 2010 season — that the first losing record of his UT career wasn’t one that MB wanted to leave on. If Deloss or the BoR thought he couldn’t right it, and quickly, he’d be gone. The Muschamp departure is a second (maybe third) order effect of a historically bad season — and only came because Meyer decided to leave now. Maybe if we had gone 7-5 (like UF), Mack would have stepped down and WM would be our new HC. C’est la vie.
If Randy Shannon is the right choice, get him on board now and stop the defensive recruit drain. If he isn’t, and we need to wait until after the bowl games to pull of another Chizik/Muschamp coup, then so be it. All you tee shirt fans (at least the ones with higher LF priority than me!), sit home. I will enjoy this opportunity to improve my seats, at your expense. Like stocks — buy on bad news.
First off I heard muschp is going to be his own dc
Second of all mushchamps friend is blowing smoke cuz I guarantee as long as we keep applewhite and hire a good dc/oc as I think we will then I have full confidence that Mack will make a title run in 2012 or 13 those will be our 2 most talented teams maybe ever

So now rumor is fact?
A guy said it was a friend and that is news? With the pathetic defense that Muschamp put on the field, I am glad he took his talents to South Beach..F…him..
The defense wasn't pathetic
It was one of the best in the league, but I don’t want to go over that debate again here
But I understand the reaction. It’s a defense mechanism/human nature to say someone sucked when they’ve left you.
The point is that IF what the friend wrote was true
and that was the scenario, that Mack would retire after 2010… and had kept his word to do so, or even told Will okay by 2011, then he’s saying that Will likely would have chosen to stay at Texas (we do know that he was committed before and really liked it here), and we would still have him to be our HC next year.
No one ever said what the guy wrote was a “fact.” It wasn’t even a rumor at the time. He was supposedly well regarded on the OB board, though. Like I said, take it for what you want.
Holgersen says no thanks to Muschamp
he’s off to be the OC at West Virginia and will be the HCIW for one year.
