2011 Recruits Sound Off

While all the drama unfolded Saturday night with the departure of Will Muschamp, eyes closest to the program were glued to visiting recruits and the impact the DC change may have. What have we learned since the weekend? Mack Brown did not sit on his laurels and immediately activated Coach Rucker to hit the trail. And while many of us were burning the midnight oil looking at every tweet and post to gleen any information available, current Longhorn recruits were confirming their future. Many are on record confirming their commitment while the big fish are playing their part by being coi (see what I did there?).

ESPN's Jamie Newberg - Changes Don't Affect Texas' Class (you can say that again, brother).
"It's a business," said Texas commit Quandre Diggs, a four-star cornerback from Angelton (Texas) High School. "The whole thing is a business. That is a great opportunity for Coach Muschamp and his family. He did what he had to do. Sure though I was surprised and shocked we have had some other changes as well. But in the end, [Texas coach] Mack Brown has to do what is best for Texas. He will go out and get the best [coaches]. Who wouldn't want to coach here at Texas?"
"My commitment is done. I am stuck on Texas," said Josh Turner, a four-star athlete from Oklahoma City (Okla.) Millwood. "It's a great opportunity for Coach Muschamp. Texas is a great program and we will be fine. I traded some text with some of the other guys [commitments] and they all feel the exact same way I do."
"The coaching changes did not change my decision on going to Texas," (Sedrick) Flowers said. "I didn't decide to go to Texas for a coach. I decided to go because Texas is a school where I see myself being a really good player."
I think these statements are a good sign that THE CHANCE TO PLAY AT TEXAS AND IMPROVE THE ODDS FOR PATH TO THE NEXT LEVEL TRUMP COACHING MOVES AND REALIGNMENT. Whew, thanks for letting me get that off my chest. FORTY TWO former UT players are currently filling NFL rosters (tied with USC and Miami). That's a lunker lure if I've ever seen one.
The one that concerns me is Malcolm Brown given this is Major's "baby". His father says his focus is on Denton Guyer next Saturday at Cowboys Stadium and college "will be dealt with later."
However, Malcolm also had this money quote.
"It's a shock about Coach Muschamp, but I didn't talk to him much," Brown said. "Coach Applewhite was the main guy who recruited me, and I don't know what's going on with him right now. I don't know how to answer all the questions people are asking about it, but Texas is still the school I want to go."
I personally think it a good sign that Major was in attendance at Hero's Stadium this past weekend. In spite of all the changes, Major is a Longhorn first. I think at the end of the day Major would do the right thing, as we heard from Muschamp, and promote the Longhorns over Bama should he leave the staff for seemingly greener pastures. Just a hunch.
[Update 12/14 - Edmond meets with Giles and Rucker. He's in per Gerry Hamilton Hookem247. h/t NeTexHorn]
[Update 12/14 8:30 a.m. cdt - Brown and Russell confirming it's Longhorns per David Flores / San Antonio KENS5.com]
Malcolm Brown says, "It’s made me think, but I’m still fully committed to Texas. It would be a pretty bad loss to lose Coach Applewhite. But I committed to Texas, not a coach."
Sam Houston defensive tackle Quincy Russell and Stevens quarterback Mykkele Thompson also are holding firm in their commitments to the Longhorns.
Russell said Muschamp gave no hint he was considering leaving UT when he visited him at Sam Houston about a week ago. "He just wanted to know how I was doing and wanted to make sure I still was committed to Texas," Russell said. "I can’t be too mad about him leaving. He has to look out for his family. "I really liked the defensive scheme Coach Muschamp ran. It was up front and aggressive. But I have faith that Coach Brown will find another good defensive coordinator."
[Update 12/15 5:45 p.m. cdt - Cedrick Reed is reaffirming commitment per Jeff Howe @ Hookem247]
Reed reaffirmed his commitment to Texas when coaches Major Applewhite and Oscar Giles made a visit to the school following a weekend when Reed took an unofficial visit to Texas A&M recently.
It is uncanny that Coach Brown, in spite of the upheaval, has been able thus far to hold almost all of the commitments in check. Here is a nice compliment from Bobby Burton.
Recruiting is going more smoothly than you can imagine.
Speaking to Gerry and Jeff, we are absolutely impressed with the job Mack and the staff have done to keep the recruiting class in place.
I have been covering recruiting for nearly 20 years now, and I can tell you without question I’ve never seen a staff have this much coaching change and not lose a single recruit. Never.
My hat is of to Mack and to his staff, and even to the recruits, because they obviously chose a school and not a coach, which is what all coaches at every school preach to the recruits.
So whether you like his hires or you don’t, Mack Brown is a master recruiter. An absolute master.

Why
Is Westerman on the fence?
He had to know our OC and O-Line coach were going to retire/be let go for awhile now…..you think he anticipated playing for Muschamp that much as a HC over Mack?
I hate to see Linemen on the fence but
we have a monster class even with the coaching changes and the straddlers. Hope they all come and play for The University. But in the end, 18 year old kids will still be 18 year old kids…..

Why Chet Moss gets one of the first offers!
I just got off the phone with Cedar Park linebacker Chet Moss, who is making the short trip home after his official visit.
He said he’s talked with Kendall Thompson and Steve Edmond since the news of Will Muschamp’s departure. Moss said he feels good about both guys staying with Texas after speaking with them.
“I’ve talked with both of them and they actually sounded good to me,” Moss said. “Its whatever – I think everybody was upset at first but now, I think everybody know that Texas is going to hire the best available coach.”
Moss said he’s going to do his best to keep the class together.
“I’ve talk with everybody who wasn’t there and with everybody who was there,” Moss said. “I think right now everybody is focused on getting to Texas and winning a few national championships over the next four years. That’s our goal.”
In Mack Brown We Trust!
Agreed
Chet Moss may go down as the most important recruit by keeping them all together. He certainly has a future in PR post graduation if football doesnt work out for him. Great kid.

Now Moss will be one of my favorite players to cheer for and I hope he succeeds.
We live in an instant notification and gratification world with the interwebs, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Why Mack thought he could kick back and slowly review OC positions is ridiculous. We have recruits that want to know NOW what is going on….this is part of that old school philosophy and the 18 year olds these days are much diffrent. News is instant. Mack needs to get his butt in gear and keep up with the rest of us. Florida showed him how fast they can react. Mack better get Applewhite on board because if Applewhite leaves it will be a very bad sign and probably much worse then Muschamp’s departure.
Not so fast
“Florida showed him how fast they can react.”
There is speculation running rampant about this fact. Lemme see….Coach Meyer resigns Wednesday and Muschamp tells Brown on Thursday of his intentions so he can discuss with players at football banquet and recruits over the weekend. Is it possible that Will had been vetted out over several weeks perhaps? Did Foley/Meyer back channel the Muschamp hire without notifying Belmont? Did Will tell Mack either give up or I’m gone?
The speed in which Florida finalized the decision leaves many to wonder the real insider story.
If that is true
It was prety crafty and pulled off exceedingly well which is hard for something of this magnitutde. Also, Muschamp must have kept his mouth shut to recruits because they would have talked.
Applewhite. We better have him locked down or else we have really messed up allowing him continuing to contact our recruits.
And UF or UGA vs. UT for Muschamp
I believe that UF and UGA were Muschamp’s dream jobs and I don’t think Mack stepping down would have necesarily kept Muschamp from picking UF over us. His ties are to SEC and his family is from Florida. So, that is just something that we cannot compete with imo.
Hopefully Applewhite is the reverse as to UT over UF.
On the other hand
It’s a business and with Major it would be OC not a HC position. If it was OC v OC he would probably stay. Or HC v HC. However if it is between UF and OC versus UT and QB or RB coach, he would and should go. Business is business.

Agreed
I meant that if MA is offered OC at both schools why would he choose Florida when he has much less risk and better ties at Texas. From a risk/reward standpoint it would be much safer for him to stay under the Coach Brown umbrella, and he might even work his way up to the lead candidate for HC at Texas.
I find it hard to believe that Florida will be OK with Muschamp hiring Applewhite. An “inexperienced” OC and HC sounds like a dangerous combo. Co-OC for Applewhite at either school makes more sense to me.
I wish Applewhite would announce that he is staying put. This is not cool to string along recruits and I think the longer he stays mum the more likely that he has simply agreed not to announce his transfer until Texas has lined up the OC replacement out of respect to Mack. However, if that is the case Mack should have immediately cut him off since he has access to our recruits.
I feel the worst about Cedric Reed
He was already flirting with A&M, and this could be the final thing that pushes him away.
Randy Shannon keeps emerging as replacement...
If that happens, i think we not only keep them all, but pick up a couple more elites by signing day.
Would be fantastic
I have been following the Shannon talk, and am keeping my fingers crossed.
I loved Muschamp, but if Shannon can come in here and recruit just as hard, have passion, and run a better defense, then I love Shannon more.
From Hook'em247.com:
Ken Rucker made a swing through East Texas (holla!) and stopped to check in on Steve Edmond (Daingerfield) and Kendall Thompson (Carthage):
Edmond :
“Even though Muschamp left, nothing is going to change. Everything is going to stay the same,” Edmond said. “I’m going to stick with what I’ve got. Basically, coach Giles and Rucker came today, talked to me. They informed me that they’re going to get the best coaches and it’s good opportunity for me.”
Kendall Thompson:
Thompson added, “I’m 100% Texas. It went real good today.”

A little lot more good news from Malcolm Brown :
"It was really crazy," Brown said Monday as Steele began preparing to play Denton Guyer for the Class 5A Division II state championship. "I was really surprised.
"It’s made me think, but I’m still fully committed to Texas. It would be a pretty bad loss to lose Coach Applewhite. But I committed to Texas, not a coach."

If we can get some recs for this thread, it will pin to recommended fanposts and not get buried downstream.....

There is some smoke
surrounding Christian Westerman and how committed he is at this point. Recruitocosm floated the rumor that he had in home visit from Oregon and could possibly take a trip to Eugene. I believe that he visited UO before committing to Texas, but he is not listed as having taken any of his official visits yet by Rivals. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. He is one recruit we definitely need to keep in the fold.
As an aside:
Westerman’s high school team won its 3rd consecutive state championship last night beating Mesa Desert Ridge 21-13. This was also their 40th consecutive win.
From Jeff Howe @ 247-
I’ll say this about Westerman – his dad told me a few weeks ago that Auburn and USC were still recruiting Christian. We’ve heard that there has been some contact with Oregon. OUInsider.com has said that Westerman was at one time in contact with OU following his verbal commitment to Texas.
Not to force anyone to push the panic button, but I think its fair if the Westerman family wants to take the wait-and-see approach to see who the new offensive line coach will be before they make a resolution on what to do.
As of right now, he’s still committed to Texas and as I’ve mentioned before the family has given me no indication personally that Christian is having second thoughts.
For me, I think I’ll believe what Gerry and Jeff put out…
He is a top rated Run Blocker
We need him and I hope he still loves the Longhorns. How could he not want to block for Malcolm Brown, the best RB in the country? They can be a dream team. MB (as in Malcolm Brown) should be recruiting him and making sure that he is his lead blocker!
Has he recoved from his injury?
Was he in the playoffs?

That's the last I heard, too.
Let’s hope he makes a full recovery and records some serious takedowns as a Longhorn.

Westerman update
His camp is still silent. Oregon and USC are reportedly going to get some looks as he has not taken an official visit. However, it was reported that Major was at the championship game Monday night. We’re hot on his trail but if he is a whiff, we’ll just get the next big ’un who wants to play in Austin. Party town. Girls in cheekless chaps. Christian, are you listening to me?
Holy shitstorm, Batman!

If he doesn't go for the girls in cheekless chaps
Let’s get Malcolm Brown on the phone…..they can be the dynamic duo with Westerman blocking and MB scoring.
Does that violate any recruiting rules?
And I assume by scoring you mean touchdowns.

Word on the skreet is that we've been eliminated by Jamauria Rasco.
I guess now as soon as the new DC gets settled, we should see another offer go out.
Recruitocosm
To add salt to the Rasco wound, it appears that DE prospect Brandon Alexander has been offered by Muschamp.

Reed is probably a goner too
He was already at the A&M-Nebraska game and I’m not buying it for one second that it was so his dad could watch Nebraska. I have a reliable source who said Reed was waffling way back when that happened. My source didn’t say that it was a done deal that Reed was gone, just that he was still considering A&M. It is close to his home, but I can’t imagine giving up a chance to play at Texas and he could get some good realy PT.
Maybe we go back to Hughes. Wouldn’t mind stealing one from OU.
