Ideas for a new Texas mascot
I've been thinking about our season and the dismal turn of events things seem to have taken over the last few months. Teams like Baylor and Iowa State really humbled us and took us down a few notches. With the assistant prospects so bleak, our messiah turning Judas and leaving us for a swampy wasteland, an ineffective and naive CEO who cares more about his friends than winning games, an interception machine at QB, and our fabulous and fun-filled trip to the Sitting At Home Bowl 2010, it's hard to see how things could get much worse.
I think our problem is arrogance and entitlement. This is most obvious in our use of a proud, tough, majestic and beautiful steer as our mascot. I propose that as a show of humility (or perhaps as a karmic offering to the football gods) we change our mascot to something more representative of our situation.
A chicken cockroach with its head cut off is an obvious (albeit cliched) choice, but rather graphic to put on a kid's T-shirt. Bunny rabbits might be appropriate, but then again, rabbits have a running game. The large, slow-moving Galapagos tortoise has a certain charm to it, but maybe we should pick something more native to Texas?
Let's come up with a mascot that truly represents our program. Good categories to pick from include animals who tend to let wide-open prey get right by them, animals who blindly follow a leader, and animals who eat their young. Discuss!
P.S. Naturally, if we change our mascot, we'll need a new logo, as well. As my suggestion and in homage to the school I currently attend, I've changed my avatar to a medal featuring St. Jude, who as you may know is, fittingly, the Catholic patron saint of lost causes.
P.P.S. I'm supposed to be studying for my evidence final, so let me just add: hearsay. best evidence rule. objection.

I’m sorry, dime. I’ll change it to something else.
If that is a veiled criticism about me, I won't hear it and I won't respond to it.
I was kidding. :-)
But I am on this list of city-dwelling chicken owners and they talk about retiring their hens, meaning they take them to the great free range in the sky. It is awful. My girls get organic spinach from Central Market and black sunflower seeds as treats. They follow me around (my terriers don’t eve do that) clucking for treats…I’m rambling.
Back to the Texans game. I’m not crazy about those red uniforms.

It's delicious
I made a big pot of it a few days ago so I’d have all my meals made and ready to go for finals time, and it’s all mine because the bf does the low carb thing. I’m eating the last bowl of it right now, with an ice cream scoop because all our spoons are dirty. And I’m already a half-assed hippie anyway (i.e., I love vegetarian food and big juicy steaks, and I’m all about the environment but also about long hot showers). Well, the camera always shoots Bevo from the front so we see his face.
We don’t we just spin Bevo 180 degrees and have the cameras shoot him from that angle. What we see being produced from that angle will be apt symbolism for what this season has produced football-wise.

I suggest the armadillo...native to Texas!
The armadillo tries to have a running game, but it gets run over by things that are way faster than it’s prepared for. And on t-shirts, the armadillo can be upside down with those X’s where its eyes should be. D – E – D, ded.

I agree
with the armadillo.
Apparently when our coaches are faced with tough decisions they curl into a ball or dig a hole and climb into it. We can alter the players’ pads to make them look like an armadillo pattern as well.
Yes and they are hemophillias so just like us they are unable to stop the bleeding
Another similarity, Armadillos (mainly Dasypus) make common roadkill due to their habit of jumping to about fender height when startled (such as by an oncoming car).

History lesson
Back in the 70’s there was a big rift between student government, which actually did things back then, and the administration, which was evil incarnate. At one point, the administration revoked most of the student government powers, but they discovered that they had one left — the power to name the school mascot. And so it was that for about a week, the official mascot of UT was the Armadillo. Of course, some local merchants were upset and it was not long before Bevo was back, but the Dillo had its day.

That's wild! Never heard that.
I’m relatively new to UT compared to you guys (I started grad school in 2008), but it sounds from Caradoc’s story that there’s precedent for the armadillo. All the law school peoples on BON should appreciate a good precedent.
"God is in control of my life, no matter what happens I know I am standing on the Rock." - Colt McCoy
And the Armadillo was one the hippie symbols in 70s Austin.
I’m sure there was a logical reason, but I don’t remember much from the 70s.

To continue
Not long after that, student government was taken over by the “Arts and Sausages” party, which ran a character from the Eyebeam comic strip “Hank the Hallucination” for student body president. Hank won easily and that was end of student government at UT.

A plate of fresh, Rocky Mountain Oysters. Bevo may have been castrated, but somewhere in there, there might be a strong swimmer that could spawn a new generation of greatness.

Aoudad Sheep
I spent the past couple of days in a deer blind reading BON and other sites through my old ass blackberry because I could only get signal up on the hill in a blind. I read this post and shortly after a heard of 6 Aoudads walked up to the feeder I had a view of.
If you haven’t heard of them, look them up. They are the toughest SOBs out there. Not huge, but if you’re shooting one you better knock it down with one shot or you’ll be tracking it for a while. I shot one last season and didn’t get the heart. I tracked it for 300 plus yards, down a 30 foot cliff, yes he jumped, spilled lots of blood, but kept going. Eventually my chase led me to the neighbor’s fence which this guy jumped. It was a 5 foot fence. These guys are stubborn, tough and very athletic animals. The one I shot probably was just looking for somewhere comfortable to die after he put up a good fight against biology and my inherent advantage of having a 7-Mag. I saw 3 packs over the weekend and in 2 of the 3 I watched them ram eachother with their horns. They were too young to shoot, but I enjoyed watching their nature.
Attribute whichever parts of our team/staff/fanbase/program as you like to Aoudads. I can come up with many comparisons for each of the characteristics.
glad you're back
you were missed

The first test wasn't bad
It was taught by an adjunct and was multiple choice, so it didn’t fry me. I would rather it have been essay for grade purposes, but at least I was able to go into Crim Pro with a clear head. Crim Pro, however, was a beast. Regardless, I’m halfway down the road to being called “Counselor!”

That's always terrifying isn't it?
I had that problem in Constitutional last year. So, how on earth is a crim pro class that only does jail to bail set up? I’m just trying to wrap my head around it because it seems like we stayed on everything else (searches, Terry stops etc.) forever before we even got to that point.

Our main topics were prosecutorial discretion, grand juries/pretrial hearings, the speedy trial clause, right to counsel, plea bargaining, discovery, jury selection, appellate review and habeas corpus claims.

The same prof teaches the other half
Terry stops, search and seizure, etc. in the spring. My crim professor was really into that stuff so I got a lot of it already 1L year, so I don’t feel like I’m missing too much by not taking the other half next semester. Too many good tax classes offered next semester :-)

As of now, I'm not dead set on anything
But I’m looking towards several areas. Right now I’m really thinking about trying to go the environmental or oil and gas route. Also, coming in I didn’t think I wanted to be in the courtroom, but I’m done really well in Mock Trial here, and I;ve loved it, so trying to do litigation work is definitely in the realm of possibilities. I also find Criminal law interesting, but like you said earlier, I’m not certain I want my clients to be criminals.
Recently, I’ve also had the desire to try to practice in Alaska (I think it would be an amazing experience. I’ve exchanged a few emails with LonghornStl about how to make that happen, so I guess we’ll see.
"It's all bullshit, and it's bad for 'ya." -George Carlin

I may be in the Austin area around New Year’s. Let me know if you have any interest in visiting. Wine (overpriced) at Eddie V’s and margaritas at Matt’s both work for me. I would be happy to share my thoughts with you, for what they’re worth.

At the six-man level. Didn’t play a lot of defense. Our coach didn’t like his center or his QB to play both ways, so I was one of the few that didn’t have to go Iron Man the whole game.

where are you trying to load from? You have to have the actual picture thread (URL) to post it.
There is not a situation or individual that cannot be improved by the addition of chocolate.
If you copy the URL of the picture
and post it in the pop-up box that comes up when you hit the little tree picture in the dialogue box here,,it should work. Hit preview to see if the picture posts before you actually hit post.

Thanks. Before I hand the pic over, this is what I tried to do and it did not work. If you have any ideas let me know.
I tried copying and pasting the location of the pic from my desktop to insert it and it did not paste. I then tried to type in the location of the pic to insert it from my desktop and that appeared to not work as well because when I went to preview my post all I saw was the location/address I typed in and not the actual pic. dont know if it makes a difference or not, but the pic is not a pdf. thanks again!
Did you click on the little tree box above the comment section?
Did you get a pop-up window asking for the URL? Did you double check the URL to make sure there were no “doubles” in it at the beginning (http:// http://?) The picture doesn’t have to be pdf ,,none of mine are. I think possibly some firewalls prevent posting. Something does. I can’t post from my computer at work but have no problems at home.

The URL should look something like this
There is not a situation or individual that cannot be improved by the addition of chocolate.

you have to upload it to a photo site and then use the direct link to the image (not the page the image is on, but the link to the photo ending in .jpg, .gif, etc.).
