Your Teryl Austin Stat Crib Sheet

Our new DC had just one year as a DC under his belt, with a Florida team that was pretty bad based on their standard.

Stat Of The Day: Scoring Defense

Yea, but you also have to remember that Florida lost a lot more than Texas did on Defense last year. He had to replace Joe Haden, Jermaine Cunningham, Carlos Dunlap, Brandon Spikes & Major Wright (who all went in the first 3 rounds). It is not exactly an apples to apples comparison when compared against Texas this year. You have to take into account strength of competition and shittiness factor of both offenses.

The bigger point

Is that its without his recruits, one season in.

So really, it tells nothing.

If you look at the per conference stats, UF did pretty damn good for being near the bottom in TFL and TOs, and not having TOP on their side (which we did, surprisingly enough).

You have to like that they didn’t get burned for long runs near as much as we did, though thats probably mostly a personnel thing with the safeties as much as an Xs and Os thing, and again he didnt recruit them.

Id rather have 52% TD conversion in the redzone than 60+ we had this year. The 4th down conversion stats are scary, but thats the stat which is probably the most meaningless given the sample size and lack of context.

I think we still largely have no idea what to expect, so I remain hopeful.

I like Coach Chump, I really did

But, the truth is our D sucked this year and we ceraintly didn’t play as tough a schedule as Florida.

I understand why folks are upset that we may not be hiring Shannon, but I am more than willing to give Austin a chance and I think his resume’ looks pretty darn good.

Coach Chump?

…so that’s what we’ve stooped to?

Seriously, these idiots calling Muschamp “chump” or “Muschump” are going to feel pretty stupid when UF wins a MNC in two or three years. The UF head coaching position is arguably the #1 job in college football right now, what kind of idiot gets upset at a guy for taking a promotion to the top job in his field?

by hodad on Dec 15, 2010 10:18 AM CST up reply actions

Well we did think he was ours

I dont think its irrational to be upset, even if you understand that he has to take THAT job when its offered.

However, I do agree that reducing to name calling him for his decision is taking it too far.

I am quickly coming to the conclusion that if we flagged every personal attack in these threads, the mods would be overwhelmed.

I'm not one for name calling but wouldn't it be the same as poking fun at Stoops.

He’s no longer with Texas and is a potential opponent and taking liberties with his name is not “stooping to a new low” IMO.

Just ask Missouri.

Short answer – Hell yes he was. The Bod had many short comings, but clutchtitude was never one of them.

by BoddickerIsClutch on Dec 15, 2010 1:09 PM CST up reply actions

Massive downgrade...

Austin wasn’t overly impressive as DC down at UF. Despite the ridiculous talent he had at hand his defenses gave up over 30 points in half their SEC games, including against offenses as anemic as LSU (92th), South Carolina (50th), and Georgia (48th) . UF even gave up almost twice as many points to FSU as OU did, and OU’s defense is pretty average (not to mention OU took their foot off the gas and let FSU get a trash TD). Statistically UF looked a lot better than they actually were (on defense) thanks to all the creampuffs on their schedule, but whenever they played teams with similar talent they crumbled like a 10 day old cookie.

It surprises me a team with UT’s stature in college football didn’t try to do better than hiring Austin. Of course he hasn’t been OC for long so there is a lot of room for improvement. Still, weird that Mack would settle on this guy. This is a huge downgrade from Muschamp.

I thought you were banned from this site?

If PB let you back in, does that mean you guys are gonna let me back on The Cream.

and what did they do? If they were making fun of the Aggies, I’m surprised the mods even caught it.

2010 Teryl Austin > Will Muschamp

Don’t get me wrong, I worship at the altar or Boom and wish more than anything he stayed on and eventually ascended to HC for us, but when you’re analyzing these 2010 stats you have to remember a few things lost in the numbers, in my humble opinion.

First, Florida only scored ONE offensive touchdown all season. One. Florida still had a winning record and is going to a bowl. Guess what was happening on the other side of the ball to make that happen? And yes, like us, Florida lost a lot of talent on D as well coming into this season. Did our vaunted D carry us to the happy place?

On that note, our D, while full of potential, honestly seemed to quit in the UCLA game and several times later. I understand their frustration, given Greg Davis’ epic failures that put them in bad position after bad position but honestly Will has to wear that. Those were his troops and they didn’t show up to fight. Not saying that response isn’t human nature, but it’s not professional, and not up to the standards of an elite, winning program.

So, while I think most of us would rather that Boom never left the 40, let’s at least be a little grateful that Teryl Austin is even a name being mentioned, and respect what the man did at Florida.

Obviously, kindly forgive that major typo...

I was mashing two things together quick… My point was that the Florida O was perhaps as abysmal as our own… Of course they scored more than one touchdown. Typo. Siento.

Haha I was reading that I was like....

there is no way that is accurate.

AFB Condensed- New name, same flavor.

Quoting yourself doesn't require your own name attached to it. I'm going to assume if there isn't anyone else's name attached it's yours.
