Brewer Met With Davis Wednesday
As reported on 104.9 The Horn, Lake Travis quarterback Michael Brewer met with Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the quarterback situation at Texas and the potential for a scholarship offer.
With Denton Guyer quarterback JW Walsh off the board, Belton's David Ash and Brewer are the only quarterbacks currently on the Texas radar and Brewer was reportedly only offered a grayshirt by the Texas staff.
The Wednesday meeting suggests that the Longhorns may be interested in offering Brewer more than a grayshirt -- Mack Brown and company may be willing to offer Brewer a scholarship in an effort to land the talented but undersized signal caller, whose father played the same position for the Longhorns.

My heart says we oughta offer somebody who so clearly
wants to come, somebody who bleeds orange, and is a proven winner.
My head says it’d be smart to see where the chips fall over the next 4-8 weeks at least. It may be he’s better off going the route of Riley Dodge (N. Texas) or G.J. Kinne (Tulsa, after a year at UT) — if he wants to play. If Brewer really wants to be at UT, he can walk on and try to prove to the coaches they were wrong in not offering a scholarship.
Brewer has offers
from spread teams like Baylor, Auburn, Texas Tech, and Tulsa already, with more surely to come in the near future. In other words, he’s too good to ask to walk on or take a grayshirt. If the Longhorns want him, they need to offer a scholarship and soon. Even then, I’m not sure that he doesn’t pursue better opportunities elsewhere.

Is he Texas good, though?
If he had a normal pattern of development would you feel comfortable with him having the reigns for one or two seasons?

Would like to see some film on him
and unfortunately all that there is on YouTube is just LT highlights. From what I know, he has the running ability to be effective in that part of the game and is taller than Todd Reesing. I think he’s probably borderline Texas good, but I don’t think any of the quarterbacks ranked lower than him are better than Brewer, so if it’s not Brewer or Ash, than who is it? I think that’s as much of a consideration than if Brewer is Texas good or as good as Wood or Case McCoy.

Thats a good point
It doesn’t kill us not to take a QB in this class though I prescribe to the same line of thinking of you that it is preferred we do. I don’t think we should chase after Walsh, though I knew he’s your flavor of the year for QB. I think we should offer both Brewer and Ash and take the first one. I saw Ash play and I think he can be good. Brewer is coming from the same system as GG with decent measurables so it seems safe to me.

Agree with that philosophy.
And I think that may be what ends up happening.

Ditto
I saw Ash play on television and he seemed to me to have Texas potential. I actually kind of liked him and thought he had good leadership skills, etc. I suspect that Brewer is in that same borderline boat. What if they both want to say yes, do we take them both? Wonder what the QB situation is like for 2012. I saw that Brewer may project on defense also, if he is a possible there that helps to justify taking a chance on him.
I see a GJ Kinne comparison in the making

Any Dual-Threat Athletic QB's out there?
I think one could find a niche in the next 5 years behind Gilbert, Wood & McCoy, none of which could hold up a season running option. It’s possible, such an athlete could be groomed like Sherrod Harris minus the injuries.
You know, GoBR, that said many of the same things about his dad.
He sorta came out of the blue to take the job. Many said he couldn’t throw worth beans, couldn’t run that well…turns out he could do both and was a damn fine football player.
Getting a three-peat is tough. Brewer, from most accounts I heard from veteran watchers of LT (they are in our district) was that he was quicker than GG and a little better runner; passing was closer than most would suspect. Of course, LT has been running that same offense for almost 20 years and most would say GG was the best of the whole bunch.
But remember, lest we forget, that QBs are mortal and #2 can be just as important as #1.
Nice, what kind of a haircut did he get?

Do we really need a QB or 2 in this class?
Just saying this because of the fact that we have Gilbert, Harris, McCoy, and Wood. Not sure if I missed anybody, but imo I figure we should be good on the QB recruits til 2012’s class. Sure wouldn’t mind beefing up on the OL though since we have a stellar Def aswell as WR class!
Probably not absolutely necessary
but I think in general the coaches want to take a quarterback every class and they want insurance for the future, although taking a quarterback in the 2012 class would be a similar type of insurance.

The numbers make it look like either one or none, but...
…would it be so unlikely for Texas to take the first out of Ash or Brewer who commits, and leave an offer on the table for Walsh for a while in case he re-thinks it? While I’m normally against poaching commitments to other schools, I don’t think it’s any big deal almost a year before the signing day. It’s not like the last-minute crap with Perriloser.

Possible reasons for snagging a QB
I think Texas would ideally prefer to avoid having to start freshman QBs. It just takes one transfer and then an injury before Texas is using its emergency QB. Also, not every QB pans out. Chiles did not live up to expectations and for some reason Harris has never been given a shot. What if both Case and Wood don’t develop or one transfers? Then Texas could be in trouble.
Although, it feels like we have played the 4 or 5 of the last 6 seasons without a legitimate backup. We have been lucky so far.
Risky
Chiles and Harris were both a little risky based on the fact that they were known as running QB instead of a throwing QB who can run. Less risk with Wood and McCoy because they both can pass the ball a lot better than Chiles or Harris ever could or ever would.
Isn't some of that hindsight?
Wood has had a lot of issues passing the ball at times as well, and while I didn’t follow Chiles as a high-schooler, it sure doesn’t seem like the guy was looked on as a much worse passer coming out of high school as Wood.

I coached Chiles in 7 on 7 during my summers playing college ball
He truly didn’t play QB until his senior year and the whole offense was built around him making plays with his feet. While Chiles was/is a decent passer he never had an overly strong arm or had to make any difficult throws. His athleticism was his biggest asset. He really is a good kid and I hope he finds some success in his senior year.

As it stands, I really would rather we didn't sign a QB until next year.
I mean, do we really need 4 taken up at once as soon as is possible when we have other needs to look at keeping slots open for?
TEXAS FIGHT
Seems like (besides Vince) most of our good QB's have been undersized...scrapers
by Dawnpatrol on Feb 11, 2010 8:54 AM CST via mobile reply actions
Gilbert isn't undersized at all.
He’s the next good one.

We've only had one not-undersized QB besides VInce in the Mack era
And while he frustrated a lot of people, he was at least a decent college QB.

I think we should take one. I think Harris is more or less done. He’ll be on scholarship and on the team, but I bet Connor or Mccoy2 is the back up. The kid just never seemed to make it past his injuries to contribute. If he had, he would have stepped in to replace McCoy during the NC game.
There are a lot of good reasons to take a QB this year:
1) You never know who is going to pan out. Odds are that at LEAST one of Conner, Gilbert, or McCoy doesn’t (see: Chiles, Harris, Snead, Simms…)
2) Gilbert may be gone after 3 years. Assuming 1 doesn’t pan out, that leaves RS-So/Jr Woods/McCoy and a true freshman as our rotation
I dont think its as much a knock on Harris
As it is a vote on Gilbert. I think Harris is OK, but Gilbert is not the type of talent that easily gets beaten out. Besides Colt and Vince, Gilbert may have taken the starting job his freshman year from any other QB Mack has had. Its no knock on Harris really that Gilbert passed him up, any more than its a knock on Mock that Vince passed him up.
by BoddickerIsClutch on Feb 11, 2010 10:11 AM CST up reply actions
I don’t think it was a knock on Harris either. When you miss as much time as he has due to injuries it is hard to be successful.
What I’m saying is that there is probably a 50% chance that Gilbert is gone after 2 more seasons (if McCoy had a ‘stronger nfl’ arm, he’d been a lock for the 1st round last year because of his stats and achievements). Odds are also good that one of Conner or McCoy will never contribute becaue of injuries or just not being talented enough (it can happen to 4 and 5 stars = Chiles). That means that we’d have QB in his 3rd year gettting his first snaps as a starter (baring injury to Gilbert) that is being backed up a by a true freshman.
I don’t like that situation. If our backup that year is a true freshman, fine, but at least make him beat out a RS-Fs or true sophomore that we take in 2010.
Take Brewer
He’s a Texas legacy (like Gilbert), an Austin kid his whole life (like Gilbert), a champion (like Gilbert) and has gaudy stats in the spread (like Gilbert). I graduated from LT so I am biased but the kid seems to have all the intangibles. And screw a greyshirt.
Goofy Ash anecdote.
I watched the atm game in Salado with Ash and some my girlfriend’s other cousins. He was chowing down on some ice cream during the 2nd half and UT seemed to score each time. Out of superstition (and the urging of his little bro), he kept getting up to stuff himself when we needed it most. It’s evident the kid loves the Horns. That said, I want him to go somewhere he can play and be successful if he’ll be buried as an insurance policy for Wood and McCoy.
I kind of doubt we take 2
But, if they are both willing to come and compete, I think we should take them both and let them compete for a starting spot.
If they beat out Woods and McCoy, they may have some serious playing time. Even if they don’t and they all stay in class order they have 1 year leading the nation’s best team. Looking at injuries to QBs, it really is not a bad thing to have some insurance policies from a team’s point of view and it isn’t a bad thing that as a QB that you can be rested and actually recover from a mid-season injury without your team falling apart.
Does Legacy matter?
Going out on a limb to get bashed, but I do believe in legacy being a factor to make an offer to Brewer. I’m not saying every potential legacy should get an offer but it should be taken into account.
Coach Brown said in his press conference that If he has equal kids and one is a Texas resident and one is OOS, he will opt for the in-state kid. I think if the evaluations are equal, you have to give some weight to the legacy and a kid’s commitment to the program. I love the philosophy of getting kids that really want the team and program to succeed.
It would be a shame if he beat us playing for TT
Especially him being an orangeblood. I like taking the best QB you can get every year if he’s a good one. Legacy matters.

Doyle is good and may get an offer.
Then Garret’s younger brother Griffin is playing wide receiver. Haven’t seen any film on him but he made some plays. Other than that, Andy Erickson, the versatile running back/receiver, is headed to Rice.
