2011 Texas Big Board: The Defensive Backs
2011 defensive backs on the roster -- Ben Wells (2011), Blake Gideon (2011), Christian Scott (2011), Nolan Brewster (2011), Aaron Williams (2011) (possible early entry candidate), Kenny Vaccaro (2012), Eryon Barnett (2012/13), Carrington Byndom (2013/14), Bryant Jackson (2013/14), Adrian White (2013/14), Adrian Phillips (2013/14)
Notice that these are defensive backs who will be on the roster in 2011 -- the defensive backs who will graduate in 2010 will have no impact on the 2011 class.
Needs -- Four or five
Targets --
| Name (School) | JD invite? | Offer? | Commitment odds | Favorites | Quick take |
| Leroy Scott (South Houston) | Feb. 13 | No-brainer | 95% |
|
Top pure cover corner in the class -- no question about where he will play in college. Physical in press coverage with elite recovery speed. Ball skills are his only major weakness -- has trouble finishing plays and intercepting the football. |
| Sheroid Evans (Sugarland Dulles) | Feb. 13 | No-brainer | 75% |
|
Runs track and would like to continue to do so in college -- ran a 23.5 200m. Texas A&M has a legitimate shot with him because of their indoor track facility and overall quality of their track and field program. Interested in majoring in engineering. Incredible range at safety, but he's a football player all the way. |
| Charles Jackson (Klein Collins) | Feb. 27 | Possible | ? | Unknown | Just recently surfaced on the Texas radar. |
| Franklin Shannon (Dallas Skyline) | Will attend, date unconfirmed | Possible/likely | 80% |
|
Big safety with the frame to add weight and spin down to linebacker. Could end up being the smaller, rangy linebacker the Longhorns take in the class -- played linebcker as a sophomore. Strong tackler in space -- possesses tackling range -- and takes good angle. |
| Eric Agbaroji (Midlothian) | Feb. 27 | Possible | 95% |
|
Stock took a hit this fall because of a knee injury that slowed his progress and, according to Agbaroji, dropped him on the Texas board ($). Has the potential to play nickel back because of his size at 6-1. Loves Texas. |
| Kolby Griffin (Houston St. Pius X) | Feb. 27 | Likely/possible | 95% |
|
Good size and solid speed -- his lack of elite speed may keep him from receiving an offer. Strong competitor. Young for his age, as he won't turn 16 until the fall. Performed well at the Texas summer camp, eventually playing alongside Texas commits Bryant Jackson, Adrian Phillips, and Adrian White. Loves Texas. |
Other names to know -- Lyndell Johnson (Plano East), Earl Foster (Houston Lamar), Jaylon Finner (Fort Bend Elkins)
Overview -- Cornerback is a position of need, as it's uncertain how many of the recruits from the 2009 and 2010 classes will play the position in college and there isn't a lot of depth in the class, so it's a major positive for Texas that the three players who are likely the top targets -- Leroy Scott, Kolby Griffin, and Eric Agbaroji -- are all extremely high on the Longhorns.
The safety position is also one of need and Evans fits the bill perfectly for what the Longhorns desire with his pure speed. In fact, Evans and Scott may be two of the absolute top targets for Texas besides whichever offensive linemen they choose to offer and possibly even ahead of the running backs.
Wish list --
- Leroy Scott/Sheroid Evans
- Eric Agbaroji
- Franklin Shannon
- Kolby Griffin
Griffin looked like a lock for an offer and commitment, but may be dropping on the board. Agbaroji was as well, but fits a need for a nickel back. Taking two cornerbacks and two safeties would be ideal and Scott and Evans are both elite talents.

I think there is a DB from Florida
That has some serious interest in Texas as well. Will be interesting to see what happens with him. that is just what I have read around the boards.
Also really looking forward to getting Scott on campus, sounds like he has already been doing some recruiting for Texas , again just stuff I have read.
Thanks GoBR

Forgot about him, but I’ll talk about him a bit in a write-up I’m planning for tomorrow morning setting the stage for the Junior Day and talking about the out-of-state recruiting strategy.

and I thought I was going to make it through
one of these things without making a mistake. So yes, he will be around.

Thanks so much for all these big boards. Easy to read, concise, info-loaded. Your efforts, time, knowledge much appreciated. I’ll drop the boss a line and see if he’ll spring for a raise!
Yep
Thanks GOBR, great stuff!
Still expecting Kickers and Punters though ;)

Second the motion on cornerbacks.
I think this position is more critical for success in 2011-12 than even the offensive line — simply because our top three CBs in 2010 may all be gone by ’11.
On the O-line, we’ll have six freshmen (counting redshirts and true frosh) this fall, and two sophomores, so the cupboard won’t be as bare.
Solid point
Even though I am a huge proponent that everything starts in the trenches (former college lineman here so my bias is evident) I think from a depth issue you make a strong case.
