Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

Put to rest any speculation about whether Chet Moss is Texas good -- the coaching staff thinks so and Moss wants to be a Longhorn. He is the second commit of the class, following Jaxon Shipley's commitment earlier Friday afternoon.

Moss is more of an ILB prospect, right GoBR?

Yeah I think so

but I’m not sure how much that designation really applies to the Texas defense at this point, as calling a guy a SAM or WILL backer makes more sense — at this point, Moss looks more like a WILL backer so he has less ground to cover and is less likely to have to cover a tight end.

Less ground to cover?

You mean less than a mike, right? Peter Boulware, for example, was a sam who was basically an undersized end who rushed the passer all day, while Jamie Sharper was a will who used his great range to shrink the field for the insider linebackers.

I have beat wholesale ass for a whole lot less.

Just as a note

I’m about to head out for the evening, so the instant analysis and scouting report for Moss will probably have to wait for tomorrow morning.

Unacceptable!

You’re not allowed to have a life outside of recruiting!

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

So I’m assuming from all these comments that Moss is not very fast?

Timed about 4.6

Not sure how legitimate, but he looks about in that range. Supposedly the fastest player on Cedar Park’s team, for what that’s worth — none of their major prospects are skill position guys. I think the bigger concern is some stiffness that he shows in coverage, but in re-watching his film I’m changing my opinion of him a bit. I don’t think he’s a reach by any stretch, I think some of the skepticism is due to the fact that his commitment has been pretty inevitable for some time and that makes him less sexy than some of the other members of the class like Edmond or Trevon Randle.

Found some film on him

After watching his film you can definitely tell he is more of a downhill LBer. Often times in coverage I saw his feet stop moving which is a bad habit. When he comes down hill he does so with vengeance and explodes on contact. One area I saw that concerned me is his use of hands and getting off of blockers. It looked like he let blockers get inside his shoulder pads quite a bit and didn’t use his arms and leverage to keep them at bay. The way he shed blocks was sheer strength which at the next level is not going to work. Not to worry, though, as most high school players have this problem. Just an area of improvement.

Good Commit

I think he’ll continue to develop and do well.

A linebacker commit

… made me wonder what ever happened to Lynn Katoa, who was very high on the Texas wish but ended up committing to Colorado. Like Darrell Scott. And like DS, he’s no longer on the team.

Hawkins, according to this report, admitted that Katoa is no longer with the team, ending his short-lived, tumultuous tenure at CU.
Katoa started heading the wrong direction when he enrolled early in the spring of 2008. He was arrested during a melee for hitting another man with a rock in his hand. He eventually plead guilty to assault. Then, last fall, Katoa became academically ineligible and never stepped on the field. According to several reports, Katoa probably wouldn’t have been eligible this upcoming fall, either, which raises the question of, with that kind of academic record, where he can really transfer?

Where can he transfer?

He’s out of Utah, but I doubt Whittingham would take him even if eligible. If he were to be eligible, I’d guess a place like USF or Boise State would be possible, but if not, then he looks like a good candidate for an attempt at juco redemption.

I have beat wholesale ass for a whole lot less.
