No. 12 -- Sheroid Evans to Texas
An absolutely incredible day in recruiting continues with a commitment from another top 10 player in the state -- Sugarland Dulles safety Sheroid Evans, a track star with incredible range at the position. Along with Desmond Jackson, Evans is the most surprising commitment of the day -- apparently he feels comfortable enough with the track program at Texas to put his feelings for the football program over the top. Evans plans on competing in track at the collegiate level and it's no wonder why, as the kid has run a 23.5 200m.

You sure the 23.5 is correct? That is not very impressive. Sure it was not a 22.5? That would be good for a sophomore.

Thanks
Just about to post those myself. Should have researched it better the first time.

Physically he's everything you want in a defensive prospect. Athleticism is off the charts.

I have to chime in, late (f-nnnn job), WOW
I was guessing 9-11 early commits. Not a dozen before the first weekend was over.
Sounds like the coaching staff targeted the players it wanted. And sold them. AND, the coaches played the “say yes now, or tomorrow may be too late” card damn well.
Like it!!!!
As to your final point
I wonder how much of that is going on. I suspect the coaches do point out that there are plenty of other kids out there who would jump on a Texas offer in a second.

Dear Mack,
Please slow down. I went away form the computer for 6 hours and now can’t even keep track of all the new posts here and on twitter. I need a break to catch up. Thanks.
I find it amazing that UT has all these amazing athletic facilities...
Yet somehow lacks a competitive indoor track. That’s actually kind of lame, but obviously it didn’t bother Evans much. UT is still a great track program, and easily the best track/football combination in the conference.

I would suspect he is eyeing it
You just have to wander where they would put it

It's not an extremely versatile facility
I ran in a few track meets at schools that had field houses that converted between another sport (often basketball) and indoor track, but I’m not sure that Texas would consider that route, considering the basketball program. But building a nice indoor track facility would provide a great training facility for a lot of athletes in non-track hours.
The standard size is a 200m track for indoor, because that’s the size used for championship track at the college and pro levels, but I ran on some larger ones in other places. I think the biggest was at Notre Dame, which had a 350m track. Standard size is probably best because then times aren’t adjusted for national qualification purposes (adding about 0.2 seconds for a 200m race, in most cases), but Texas could really drop some jaws with the NCAA’s first full-size, 400m indoor track. That may seem like a waste to some on here, but having a 400m track would enable two things:
1. Hosting indoor track meets at the college level. I don’t believe the Big 12 or national championships could be held there if it were larger than 200m, but I think all other meets would be possible to hold there.
2. Hosting high school meets. Very few states have indoor track at the high school level, but having a 400m indoor track would allow the University of Texas to host a track meet in one of the earliest weeks of the allowed outdoor track season, since it’s regulation size for outdoor track. In fact, it could be the indoor-season equivalent of the Texas Relays. This sounds pretty unimportant to most football fans, I imagine, but I think it would actually benefit even the football season, as you’d have young track studs who also do sprints or throws coming to Austin, competing on the 40 acres, dropping their jaws at the Texas athletic facilities, as early as their freshman seasons. I think that would be a pretty good thing for Texas football, as well as for track and many other sports.

I think the ideal situation would be:
Dodds and the track program make the big push for it, secure funding for it, and break ground on it, at which point Dodds retires, Mack takes AD, and Mack names it after Dodds.

I forgot that today was Junior Day!!!!
This is amazing! 12 commits?!!!! My head is about to explode!!!! Both of them!!!!
Geez
Come on Flowers, Westerman and Hutchins. And Brandon Willilams. You know you want it. You know you have to have it.
GoBR do you expect any announcements tomorrow also or is it pretty much done for the week after today?

I'm pretty sure Williams isn't even in town this weekend
…so it’ll be tough for him to commit w/o his offer.
Good question
Flowers will probably make a decision before Westerman, who has so many options that he might take awhile to make a decision. Don’t get me wrong, Flowers has a ton of options as well, but he seems like he might come to a decision a little more quickly. Hutchins could be a quick commit, but not sure if he received an offer or not.
As for decisions in the coming days, I think the guys who really want to be in right now are in and everyone else has options to weigh and some other Junior Days to attend. Don’t think there are going to be any “get home and make the decision” type of guys — there were a couple last year. I think Chris Jones was riding back to Daingerfield with his coach when he came to his decision and Connor Wood waited several weeks. I could definitely be wrong though…

Are the commitments done for the day?

Still waiting for Hughes
Wonder if he got an offer. He would be the last one I think who is likely to commit today.
by Wescott Eberts (GoBR) on Feb 13, 2010 4:06 PM CST up reply actions
I read that everyone that came today got an offer.
"Football's so important in Texas. On the West Coast, it's a social. On the East Coast, it's a culture. Here, it's a religion."

Where did you read that?
If the list that I published earlier today is correct, I would guess that Hocutt and possibly Hutchins were not offered, because Hocutt for sure would have committed. Inside Texas is reporting that Cedric Reed got an offer and did not commit, which was expected. Flowers, Westerman, Brown, Wallace, Edmond and possibly Marquis Anderson probably also got offers, but that is speculation on those guys.

Ah.
I would guess then that Hocutt did not attend.

At this point, with all our commitments, it's unlikely we wouldn't give him an offer right?

I would think so
Unless the coaches think he would be a good defensive tackle, which is possible I suppose.

Yeah Nathan Hughes did not receive one.

I'm thinking Hutchins got an offer
aggie and USC have purportedly offered him, aggie wants him bad, he’s on the front page of their rivals page. He’s got great feet and an attitude. Also he’s not carrying a lot of dead weight.

left targets
so we still have
2 runningbacks
3 o-lineman
2 defensive lineman
2-db’s
3-lineman
gobr do you think that we wait on a oos db or take kolby griffin
Three linebackers you mean?
I would say probably two linebackers and taking a guy like Anthony Wallace would probably influence the defensive end numbers, depending on if the coaches see him as a Buck guy or not, which I think they probably do.
As for Griffin, I think that depends on the evaluation of him by the coaches and weighing whether it’s worth taking the chance on missing him while pursuing a guy like Nick Waisome, who doesn’t appear to have any connections to Texas. I like what I’ve heard of Griffin but the combination of his (potentially) his lack of elite speed and relatively low level of competition may drop him on the Texas board.
by Wescott Eberts (GoBR) on Feb 13, 2010 4:33 PM CST up reply actions
That would add up to twelve more recruits
Probably unlikely, considering the roster, no?

Best case (forgot WR):
RB – Brown and Williams
WR – Metoyer
OL – Flowers, Westerman and Hutchins
DE – Rasco and Hughes
LB – Wallace and Edmond
DB – Flowers

I would cross out Metoyer
Doesn’t look like anything is happening there. Trevon Randle I think would be a good fit or Franklin Shannon as outside linebackers in the Aaron Benson mold.
