No. 13 -- Marcus Hutchins to Texas
Just when it looked like the momentous day of recruiting had finally come to a close and I began to attempt a summary of the day's mind-bending events, another commitment surfaced. DeSoto offensive tackle Marcus Hutchins confirmed through his head coach that Texas did indeed extend him an offer and that he made the decision to become a Texas Longhorn and the 13th member of the 2011 recruiting class.

This is great news
13 is a great number, and I believe that makes 3 O-lineman. Bring in Westerman and Flowers or the guy from NM and This class will be amazing!
"The best decision I ever made was coming to Texas," James said. "The second-best decision was coming back."
Also, apparently, Rasco was in town today?

Which would affect Nathan Hughes not getting an offer.

i know i'll get blasted but
hutchins= luke poehlmann 2.0 the guy will never get to playing weight. i cant believe we took 3 sleeper lineman. 2 would have been fine but not 3. Oh well mcwhorter messed up the MOST important line class in macks term
Would you be happy if we landed Flowers and Westerman on top of these three?

He's twice as athletic as Poehlmann
Has a big frame. He keeps his weight down playing basketball 6-4, 250 right now (as a junior mind you) and has great agility and a mean streak. If nothing else he’ll project as a tight end if he can’t put on more weight, which I’d wager he will. Most exciting commitment to me today.

He's 16 or 17, most likely
It’s not unreasonable to expect a kid at that age to be able to put on another 10% or more on top of his current body weight. Another thing to keep in mind is that putting on bulk is easy, but putting on the right bulk takes a lot more time and work. He is reportedly working on the latter. You don’t want Hutchins to go from 265lbs. at 18% to 300lbs. at 28%. You want him to hit that weight at maybe 22-25%, give or take. For perspective, the average composition for an NFL draft combine OL attendee is about 28-30%.
I have beat wholesale ass for a whole lot less.

When I played O line in college
The coaches wanted us to be anywhere from 18% – 22% body fat. That is not completely unreasonable for a college offensive lineman, even a D1 lineman. I think the worry about Hutchins weight is a little premature. If you look at previous takes for O lineman it is clear that Mack prefers guys who are more lean and therefore you can build up. You definitely made a great point, burntorangehorn. I remember when I accepted my scholarship that my college coach wanted me to put on weight, a lot of weight. I was a 5’11 and played at 255 and he wanted me playing at 290 which was ridiculous. I didn’t get any guidance about putting on weight the right way and so while I was working out I just started eating a lot more. I got up to 290 but I didn’t bring my quickness with me and had a poor freshman season by my account. I then had to learn how to counterbalance watching my weight with putting on good weight. Its much easier to be lighter as a lineman and add good bulk than be too big and have to learn to get down. I don’t think Hutchins has anything to worry about.

He's only 16
and a half. He’ll be 17 in the fall, 18 when he comes to us, 19 as a RS frosh. So he has two and a half years to gain say 30 pounds of muscle, keeping that agility. . This guy should be MacWhorter’s and Madden’s pet project, tons of upside as GoBR says. I’ve been keeping track of him since GoBR reported on him in May. Dude can move, that’s his biggest asset right now, getting upfield, and is mean, errr…aggressive. No Mullet.

What are the projection of the lineman Texas has so far. Are they 3 or 4 stars?

I don't have anything but my opinion
But I would say that the group we have thus far are all solid 4 stars.

And Marquise Anderson also receiver an offer.

yeah but
were not getting hegarty and in such a important o-line class you have to wait on kids as talented as him but alas we took another body
I don't know
I think all the bodies will make for some great competition both on the field and in the weight room.
im worried
because guys like we took need really good coaching cause they’re not unbelievably talented like westerman and mcwhorter can’t coach see game vs neb. if we dont get both flowers and westerman were in trouble big time
i didn't think..
…it was majorvssims/rollleft, but after all these posts, i think it is.
