Garrett Greenlea Officially On the Radar, Will Visit
Now for some good news on a day when two potential Longhorn targets headed elsewhere in Kolby Griffin and Brandon Williams -- one of the top offensive linemen in the state, Klein Collins' Garrett Greenlea, acknowledged that he will attend the second Texas Junior Day at the end of the month. Greenlea is a hulking, 6-7, 285-pound beast with excellent speed for his size and a nasty streak that would make Kasey Studdard proud. While he excels in run blocking, he admitted that he needs a little work in his pass protection, potentially making him a future right tackle.
Jeff Howe reported some time ago that Greenlea looked like a strong Aggie lean ($), but the Houston-area star did not mention the Aggies among his group of favorites ($) that includes Texas, Oklahoma (Junior Day visit this weekend), Oklahoma State, and Nebraska, as well as some national powers. However, Greenlea did say that he plans on staying in the Big 12 and has strong feelings for the Longhorns:
I would love to get an offer from Texas on this upcoming junior day. Texas is at this point, I'd say, my favorite school in the Big 12. It's pretty much neck and neck with them and Oklahoma in the Big 12. If Texas was to offer, that would make the deciding process much easier.
His affection for Texas and his strong run-blocking skills and massive frame make him a strong candidate for an offer and possible commitment at the second Junior Day -- the concern about his pass protection shouldn't be a major issue, especially since he would seem to have the feet, or at least the straight-line speed, to work his way into being a better pass blocker. Talk about onto the radar in a massive way.

That is outstanding news
Especially the embedded quote. I’m all about having O-Linemen who eat scrap metal for breakfast. Good news on the recruiting front. Thanks GoBR
Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.
This is good news.
As long as he doesn’t find any bitches that need to be kicked, that is.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong but . . .
Since Texas and OU are Greenlea’s co-favorites and Texas hasn’t offerred but OU has and Greenlea’s visiting OU this WE, what are the odds he walks out of Norman without committing? I’d guess pretty slim if he’s serious about Texas and OU being co-favorites.
He confirmed he will attend the second Junior Day at the end of Feb
Since Texas would be a “shoe-in” if we offered, I’m sure he would wait a couple of days to see if we do. OU is high on his list, but I think Texas’ reaching out to him lately has rekindled his love for Burnt Orange.

He speaks so highly of Texas
that I don’t think he would commit to Oklahoma without visiting. But I probably would have said the same thing about Griffin and Williams, as well.

wow
I can only say we’ve seen this before and it always works out better in the end, unless you’re talking Adrian Peterson, which I don’t think Griffin is that elite of a CB prospect that we will grieve the miss.

Pass Blocking
Is something every frosh offensive lineman has to work on. Not many come in to college and are just great at kick sliding and punching with their hands without leaning. If he has got the feet and the arm length he can play left tackle after some work on his technique.

From All Us Experts at BON
Seems like the attitude is the most important thing. Nasty, mean blah blah blah. I think if you run a finesse style of scheme it would sap the nastiness out of you PDQ.
Attitude is something you can't coach
You either like hitting or you don’t. You either have a want and need to put the other person on their back or you don’t. The bad part is this is something you can’t really measure, only try to observe by watching film.

I don't get why finesse is a bad thing
A big, strong lineman who can perform each maneuver, punch, etc. with perfect precision is a terrific thing to see. Tony Boselli comes to mind. Really, finesse means a guy isn’t just technically sound, he’s technically superior. I think that’s a very desirable thing, particularly in combination with strength and toughness. It’s not something that is the opposite of toughness.

I agree
I don’t think finesse is synonymous with weak at all. I think finesse is more synonymous with being agile and having good feet. Big guys can be good athletes, too. Where’s the love!?!

Is Greenlea as Good as Hagerty?
Westerman is obviously Westerman, but is Greenlea as good or better than Hagerty? We obviously can’t take 7 OL (offers outstanding to Hagerty, Flowers and Westerman). Starting to sour on my home town boy Doyle if Greenlea was and is a possible Texas lean. Heres to Hutchins eating 7 porterhouses a day and getting his mail in the weight room.

Its hard to evaluate Hegarty because he plays at the AA level in New Mexico which honestly is terrible competition-wise. Even the AAAAA level in NM usually only produces one or two BCS quality D1 players per year and five or six D1 players overall in a given year.
Greenlea’s much easier to evaluate. Obviously Westerman is the #1 OT target. Getting him and Greenlea to bookend the line would be a major coup for us. Hegarty is a little more of a question mark but obviously he must have great measurables or he wouldn’t be targeted by so many top schools.
Thanks, I didn’t know Hegarty plays against such small school competition. Greenlea and Westerman book ending with McWhorter clipping Ensure coupons in his bath robe sounds very promising.

Another GG?
We’ll take him. Hegarty is athletic with long arms and looks like he can get downfield. If that’s really him at DE in the last clip he’s got some tenacity and explosiveness along with good feet. Those are small linemen he’s facing but Rivals mentions him as excelling in combines in their initial 2011 Watch List. Like Aaron Green in the first couple of clips on the video in the watch list article. Desmond Jackson looks mean and nasty, he would make a good sheriff for the guys down the road.
Not too worried about Kolby Griffin, he really doesn’t have Texas speed.

Agreed, we got Evans and Scott
They are the two real stars as DBs and we got M Thompson who was allegedly recruited by Akina so that he means he is probably going to D instead of trying to compete at WR which is a smart move on his part.

Noob question here
While he excels in run blocking, he admitted that he needs a little work in his pass protection, potentially making him a future right tackle.
So he’d be a more apt RT because he doesn’t have to worry about protecting Gilbert’s blindside, since the QB is right-handed? Or is this more related to his run-blocking abilities?
by goingforthecorner on Feb 16, 2010 11:28 AM CST reply actions
Generally for an offense with a right-handed QB...
…the RT is a guy who excels at paving for the runner, getting out in front of the blocking scheme downfield. When I think of a RT, I think John Runyan in his Philadelphia days. He was just a little above average in pass protection, but he was just plain sick at moving ahead and making space for the running back, whether on inside or off-tackle plays.

haha actually 1-9
I wasn’t a paid coach. I was a coaching intern for my masters and now waiting for the school districts to start hiring again so I can get a job. Our district was nasty, though. It definitely hurt losing Stepfan Taylor. It only got worse for Mansfield, too. Did you see the new district alignments? Looks like death row.

There is a great group of freshman about to step up
So they will get back there. Not sure if that is where I will stay though it seems the opportunity is there.

Generally speaking you are right
However I will add this. Its not so much that everyone is looking for that guy who is a bull dozer to play right tackle. Right tackle is more of the second place for left tackle. That is not to say that right tackles are any less talented than left tackles, they usually are just not as physically gifted.
For instance, left tackles are generally going to be taller and have a better wing span than your average lineman. The biggest misconception among lineman is that you block with your hands. False. You block with your feet. Left tackles are at their best when they use their feet to position themselves between the rush man and the QB. When you see lineman leaning in pass blocking you know they are already beat. That is the importance of having the great reach. If you can punch and the keep rush man out of your body then that is the number two thing you are searching for.
A perfect example is Justin Blalock. I have no doubt in my mind that Blalock was the most talented lineman in his time at Texas. However, he did not have the feet or wing span to play left tackle. Thus he spent his time at right tackle and right guard. Same thing with Leonard Davis’ move.
If you would like to read more on this without me taking up a whole page I would read The Blind Side. The book is much more detailed about the whole evolution of the left tackle position from the history of it to the prototypical things you look for. Its also much better than the movie.

I think of the LT as the shutdown corner of the offensive line
…the guy with the most athleticism and skillset to prevent blindside hits, especially important for teams who run the empty set from their own 10 yd line.

It’s a combination of several factors. As CoachEtch says above generally the RT is more run block oriented, but also in a standard pro set the TE is usually lined up covering the RT as well, and can help in pass blocking. The LT is generally 1) all alone 2) guarding the blind side and as a result 3) going up against the opposing team’s best pass rusher.
Before it was a cheesy Sandra Bullock vehicle The Blind Side actually spent about half of its pages talking about how the LT became the first or second most important position on the field. To summarize, it was because of Bill Parcels and Bill Walsh.
Funny thing about the movie version: On the way out my girlfriend asked me why it was called “The Blind Side”. They never even mention the phrase in the movie.
Sandra Bullock was smokin hot, though

Book was extremely educational, even for a long-time watcher and fan
One reason why virtually EVERY GOOD BOOK ever written is a bad movie is because books tell stories. movies put glamorous stars on the screen. And the producers and writers care way more about the look and the stars than the content of their dialogue.
This from somebody who’s seen upward of 6,000 movies.
I'm right there with you
I am an avid reader and a huge movie buff. That one certainly didn’t live up to the book. Especially when they tried to twist the story about the families involvement and Oher’s impression of it. The real story was much better.

Would have been one of the best O-Line classes in history and was a distinct possibility I was strongly looking forward to. Naturally we start taking these lower-ranked guys because we are flat-out lazy. Dammit. I’m willing to take 7 O-Linemen this year if it’s those four listed above. Maybe it will scare off one of the other guys…
Don't think we'll take 7 but
We might take 6. Realistically I think 2 of the 4 above plus the 3 we have would be great. If we got 3 of the 4 above…. that would be pretty impressive. Especially when you consider 2 are out-of-staters.
And I don’t think it is becuase we are lazy. It is because we need depth at this position.

The current OL commits
Are the current commits probably future 3 star OL? It seems the BON people aren’t too happy with the OL commits so far. I’m sure its because we haven’t got any top OL recruits yet.
We're spoiled
Two of the top lineman in the country visited last week — and since neither committed, we’re not happy.
We have commits from three other top OL; give me Flowers or Westerman and I’ll be happy.
4*
I just looked at the ESPN watch list and they have Hutchins and Doyle on the list. I think they will be 4 * OL.
Heard this guy is a stud
Lots of Ags like him. Supposedly would commit if A&M offered but evidently Sherman has no interest in offering right now. Interesting because I have heard nothing but rav e reviews about this guy. My bet is he ends up in Austin.
