Oh Brother! Chris Barnett to OU
http://oklahoma.rivals.com/ ($)
Just like the Civil War, brothers can fight on opposite sides of wars and it appears the Barnett family will have a son on both sides of the Red River Rivalry. Texas Safety Eryon Barnett's little brother, a 6'5" TE, has verbally committed to OU. He is commit NO. 3 for them. This weekend is their junior day.
Is it a big deal? Probably not. After all, he didn't get a UT offer.
I wonder why Chris Barnett didn't get a Texas offer? Maybe it was because he was not a die hard Texas fan like his older brother and played some recruiting games.
Chirs Barnett has been a bit of a player. If I recall correctly, originally Texas wasn't even on his list, then when Texas took didn't chase after him, he started throwing hints our way that he was actually interested in Texas. He also started forming a list of favorite schools that was longer than my arm, so he didn't seem very genuine in his alleged interest in Texas. It must have been too little too late for him with his initial coy game playing, and we all know, you don't play recruiting games with Mack Brown.
Also, it seems that while Barnett's play this past year didn't increase his stock, McFarland's play out in El Paso sent his stock soaring. Texas offered McFarland and got his commit. TE Chris Barnett was left without an offer, and so the story goes. Another recruit learning to not mess with Texas. You are either with us, or against us.
How much fun is Eyron Barnett going to have tackling his little brother? As a little brother, I know that old brothers ALWAYS win. I would love to hear any inside scoop on why Chris wasn't more interested in joining his brother. Seems like he almost wanted to cause some controversy, but I think we got the right brother (Eyron), and the right TE out of this class with McFarland.

maybe we just wanted McFarland and didn’t have room for two TE this year? I actually really hate the way you wrote what you wrote… “must’ve been playing games, must not be a big deal because we didn’t even offer him, didn’t even seem to like Texas but must have realized when Texas didn’t chase after him that he better hint that he’s interested, must not be a die hard Texas fan, must have played recruiting games”
can we stop making excuses for why kids didn’t end up at Texas? we didn’t recruit him that hard, we offered McFarland, we don’t know if it’ll be a big loss right now.

lol....that is how I feel, sorry if you don't like it
Pretty sure I’m right about what happened with him though.
I said he was a “bit of a player.” I don’t think I bashed him, but I think his ambivelance to us is part of the reason that he did not get a UT offer. Coach Brown has made it clear that we want kids that want to be here and that it does matter. That said, now that he has committed to OU it is pretty clear that he probably didn’t care about not getting a Texas offer last week.
I am surprised that he committed to OU this early, but I actually have a little more respect for him by not playing the games.
There is no excuse required by Chris Barnett or us. I don’t think he was ever high on Texas, and that is fine. Texas was interested in him, but we had another prospect that we liked better. It isn’t anyone’s fault.
I kind of “hate” that you used quotation marks above to misquote me by merging diffrent things I said by joining select parts of my statements together. You kind of missed the whole point.
Texas simply picked and offered McFarland probably for a variety of reasons that include talent and commitment to the Longhorn program, which is the right choice for us.
I hate the excuses game Texas fans plays with kids who don’t commit here/commit somewhere else… like the athlete is defective for possibly seeing a better opportunity somewhere else. I didn’t think you were bashing him, I just hate the excuses game.

I found nothing wrong with GoBR's post.
Don’t know how you took offense to it. This kid’s gonna be a suckin’ sooner and will lose to UT in four consecutive October RRR games. The Texas staff found a better prospect at TE, period. If a kid doesn’t get on board with a terrific program like UT and want to win games, that’s fine. It also shows how much state pride he has in joining up with a team outside of the state. I hope he has a good & healthy career up there – just not against the Longhorns. He made his choice.
I actually hate when people don't capitalize or punctuate properly
but I deal with it.

This is the point -- we can't get everyone. And there's no need to get in a froth
just because somebody commits to OU, Aggie, Baylor, USC or anybody else.
It’s interesting to look at the comments sometimes. Nobody was squawking about getting commitments from Cobbs, D-Money and Mike Davis late in the game this fall and winter — giving us 6 or 7 potential wideouts. But folks squawked because we didn’t take enough offensive linemen.
Scholarships is a zero-sum game, meaning if you take too many at one position, another area is going to be left thin. You can only take so many, and if you get who you target (and Mack Brown and staff are among the best at that), why worry about those we don’t even make offers to?
people were squaking about evan washington all season long (the only other instate prospect that was considered a headscratcher for not pursuing, jake matthews we tried on)

It's A Numbers Game
IMHO we don’t run fomations with TEs very often. We took two TEs year before and they hardly hit the field. We have other players that may play TE as Buckner did.So we only needed one TE.

Don't think there was anything
in the film I saw on Barnett to suggest that he was going to turn into a top-flight or even above-average tight end in college.
Not sure what the deal was with the way he handled recruiting. About the only consistent I could find was Miami with him and he had an offer. Not sure why he didn’t end up going there.
did he have decent hands? 6'5 is usually a pretty good TE
wat was his issue? speed? or just a blah-ness about him?

Didn't see any explosiveness
He looked like just another guy.

His ranking declined on most boards
I hope this is not the case, but it makes me wonder if his quick OU commit after not getting a UT offer is reactionary. It is still so early that time will tell. Maybe he thought he better lock them now because they may lose interest in him later on too.
They can still quietly say
Look for options elsewhere if they lose interest. I can see Stoopsie doing that….didn’t he do that just last year?
I think Jarrett Lake was encouraged to "look around"
Which made room for Corey Nelson. Jarrett Lake had issues related to his residency and enrollment at Jenks H.S. incluidng allegedly living with OU player Gabe Lynn’s dad. Personally, I think the NCAA was poking around a little too much so OU decided they better stay away from Lake. He switched his committment to Arkansas.
I don’t recall any other recruits getting the OU cold shoulder after committing this past year, but I have no doubt that Stoops and co. would do that in a heart beat if they needed to make room for a better player. Now that OU got commits from P.L. Lindley and Jordan Wade I really won’t be surprised if that happens this year—some phones going cold as more enticing players come on campus. Color me jaded when it comes to OU.
Yea Lake was who I was thinking of
I knew he had NCAA related issues, but OU pretty much avoided throwing him any lift rafts if I recall.
Agree about OU potentially pulling back on offers to ‘lesser talent’…..that has to happens a lot when you carpet-bomb the country!
Eddrick Lofton the safety from Irving
I believe he was OU’s first commit last year and for some reason he was all a sudden not committed to the sooners anymore towards the end of the recruiting proces. Ended up choosing Tennessee over aggie.
Yea I remember that
I remember looking at his page and seeing the switch, It’s a shame we don’t hold the coaches more accountable. We belittle the kids for changing their minds and switching their decisions, yet coaches get off scott free when they do that. Mostly the scum bag coaches, not sure I have ever seen Mack reneg to a committed kid.
Texas didnt even offer?
No worries, then. I hate to sound like Boxer (comrade napoleon is always right), but if UT didn’t offer, he’s not worth the worry.

Free story on Rivals-with Barnett interview
http://oklahoma.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1054566
“My commitment is solid, but I’m not going to limit myself, I’m not going to flirt with other schools but I’m going to keep my eyes and ears open,” he tried to explain. "The Alabamas, Miamis, Texas, and USCs, those are great schools that I’ve closed myself to. I’ve got to continue to get to know Oklahoma and the more I do, the more comfortable I’ll become.
“It’s more of a deal if something goes wrong, I don’t want to have closed all doors.”
So, sounds like his isn’t all that solid. Also, if OU’s academics are better fit for him maybe he doesn’t have the academics for Texas. That would explain a lot.
I really want LB Wallace from Skyline at Texas and it makes me a bit nervous that Barnett said he felt that OU’s future was in the room with him when he committed. (Meaning Wallace and Trey Metoyer).
Damn I figured we would still have the top recruits wanting to come to Texas just by what we reeled in for the 2010 class
You would think that guys like Wallace and Edmonds etc would want to play on the same side of the field as guys like Jeffcoat and Hicks especially with our studs recently in the NFL. Well I guess it’s the depth chart that scares some of the these 16-17 year olds away at that age they can be so easily decieved by a guy like stoops and co
What we reeled in is precisely the problem
Kids want one thing above all else — field time. For many, field time very soon.
All those high-grade signings Mack made can be seen as a message to the class or two that come behind — you’re probably looking at a lot of reserve-status time.
That’s not what a lot of kids want to hear. Some are willing to come and pay the price — redshirt, play in blowouts, get some field time with a special-teams unit or two. Start in the fourth or fifth year. Many are not that patient. That’s the price we pay for recruiting so strongly. (Check out the 2003, 2004, 2005 recruiting classes after what UT signed in 2002.)
True, but we still did an awesome job on Junior Day 1
QB, WR, DE and LB are our most stacked positions, but we still got some talent commited on the first Junior day in these spots.
QB Ash was a huge get considering the competition ahead of him with both McCoy and Wood
WR Shipley and Onyegbule are both excellent gets too-and they know the talent ahead of them—too many too list
TE McFarland was a great get
DT Jackson is the bomb and a fantastic get so early. 2010 DTs Bible and Dorsey are really good, but Jackson may think that he can compete for playing time with them and he may be right. In fact, he probably is right.
DBs Evans and Scott are the top two in the state, and probably give Byndom, Jackson and Bryant a run for their money so they could see early playing time.
DE and LB- This is where our amazing 2010 talent may scare off guys like DEs Cedric Reed/Rasco and LBs Edmonds and Wallace. It is a good problem to have though. We just have to hope that the 2011 top talent isn’t too afraid of their chances.
RB-What gives? Maclolm Brown should be excstatic at his chance to be the top back at Texas. Acutally several of the top RB recruits would probably have a good shot at early playing time.
OL-Coach Brown already said that we have a need—so guys like Westterman and Greenlea have to like their chances here.
"Is it a big deal? Probably not. After all, he didn't get a UT offer."
LOL. Seriously, UT arrogance amazes me…… The three star Sam Bradford didn’t get a UT offer but yet he finished his college career with two conference championships, a Heisman trophy, and led an offense to an NCAA record of 700 points scored in a single season. Curtis Lofton didn’t get a UT offer and he’s a freaking beast in the NFL. Maybe someone can enlighten me as to if Jermaine Gresham received a UT offer. Life as a Sooner sure must be hard…. We keep getting all of these UT rejects yet great things keep happening………….. 5 Heisman trophy winners (4 Okie born winners), 7 National championships (more than UT’s 4), a ton of Big 8 and Big 12 conference titles, a 47 game winning streak…….. The list goes on. Hell, we even produced Darrel Royal. I want to recommend a website that I found to all of my Texas brethren enemies….. www.bobstoops.com
The website is outstanding. BOOMER!
Welcome, Enraged
Glad we could brighten your day. Let’s see . . . 45-12, 28-10, 45-35, 16-13 . . .
What say you?
The point is that it's not a big deal for these guys to go to OU
Because UT wasn’t interested anyway. If UT wasn’t interested, it means they weren’t going to end up at UT anyway. So it’s no big deal.
I have beat wholesale ass for a whole lot less.

That's an unfair analysis
Obviously, we can’t take every great player from Texas. Pure logistics confirms that. We can take people we need. Logically, some will hit and some will miss. Yours don’t always pan out either. Obviously, some 5 stars are going to leave Texas to play for OU, like Peterson. I can finally say I’m cool with that because he never got his Heisman or National Championship. But throwing Bradford in our face is just plain ignorant. He’s an Oklahoma boy, born and raised. I doubt he wanted to play anywhere else. And why wouldn’t he? He’s from a small state, population-wise, with a very good flagship program. So don’t act like we missed out. Do you think Stoops would’ve taken a flyer on a small-town kid like Colt McCoy who loved UT so much? So get off your high horse before it tosses you under your “schooner.”
Every time I feel down and depressed, I think of seven simple words by a true wise man, Matt Leinart: "I still think we're the better team" and I usually end up hurting myself by laughing so hard.

Texas doesn't recruit Oklahoma
except in the rare instances that a prospect has a strong connection to Texas or desire to play at Texas, like DeMarco Cobbs last year and Josh Turner this year. As a result, the fact that Texas didn’t offer Gresham or Bradford means essentially…nothing. It has nothing to do with the Texas evaluation of those players because Texas probably didn’t even evaluate those players.
As OU knows well, to win all you need to do is recruit Texas well. And Texas recruits Texas well. In fact, if you hate Texas so much, why is that the lifeblood of Oklahoma’s program is players crossing the Red River?

Turner
According to rivals has a 3.97 gpa…..didn’t know Oklahomans could garner such scores, but since he did I would venture he may be bored with the education offered at OU as well.
Yep
OU is a cakewalk so he can just sleep through class and pull down A’s and focus on the football field…

Pretty sad if his football career doesn’t pan out though.
Yea
It’s a good thing that VY went to UT and not OU. He probably wouldn’t even be able to function without the knowledge he gained at UT.

VY is a UT graduate, so don't worry about him
Hats off to him. He kept his promise to his mom to get his degree despite his NFL millions. Not many guys come back while still in the NFL to finish up a degree.
I think Ricky did it, too.

Why is it arrogant to point out that a kid wasn't Texas' top choice?
Seems more like Sooner insecurity to me.
I saw the interweb netsite-its actually cool. A Longhorn must have helped y’all make it. Oops, was that my arrogance showing?
An OU Mod
Said the same thing about Chris that GoBR did in regards to his film, that he thought it was just average. He also said that he was much, much better when he saw him in person last summer. I wasn’t that impressed with the film either but I have heard good things. Not sure how old the current reel out there is.
