Junior film from the 14th commit in the 2011 Texas class -- Daingerfield linebacker Steve Edmond. The big, physical backer could play the Buck position in college and often looks like a beefier Tevin Jackson with his hard-hitting, downhill style of play and comfort operating in traffic.

This is a great grab
And, to me, a huge recruiting coup. It says that in spite of signing Hicks-Benson-Jackson, and having two redshirt LBers from 2009, we can still recruit a high-level linebacker. Plus, he’s out of East Texas — a hotbed of talent despite its limited population, and an area Oklahoma has long been proficient - at times dominant - at recruiting.
Distances: Daingerfield to Austin is 330 miles . . . Daingerfield to Norman is 285 miles.
I don't have a great perspective
on the history of recruiting in East Texas by the Longhorns, but I think the coaching staff has done an outstanding job of locking down that area.
I think Edmond’s commitment is a major sign of Coach Boom’s impact, as someone said in the other thread — it’s really becoming apparent that the defenders as a whole and linebackers in particular want to play for him.

Rivals picked Muschamp
as the Big 12 conference recruiter of the year. Don’t want to use his name in the same sentence with Lane Kiffin but the recruiting parallels exist…

The results parallel.

Jackson is well built
but he’s pretty lean and mean. Edmond is a bit thicker through the upper and lower body and appears to have a couple pounds of bad weight around his midsection. Really would like to see Edmond in 7-on-7 competition this summer.

He looks strong enough
to play linebacker in the Big 12 right now — he doesn’t need to add mass at this point, just work on maximizing his explosiveness and keeping his muscle mass lean.
To me, it’s a matter of whether the coaches want him to add the weight to move to defensive end. I don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion.

I think that's what realmccoy was saying
The kid looks like he’s a heartbeat away from putting a hand on the ground and pinning his ears back.

Man, I'm not complaining
But what the hell are we gonna do with all these LB’s? LOL! Its not like theres any room for anybody to move down to DE either! Our linebacker corp as of yet is deeper than the secondary, right?

Wonder if Chris Jones helped at all
Being a Daingerfield WR we just signed. Maybe they are close and wanted to play together or he raved about Mack and Boom?
His coach
said that he “felt comfortable” there and hit it off with the coaches. Edmond did say a little while back that he wanted to talk to Jones about his teammate’s reasoning for heading to Austin. At that time, it sounded like the depth chart was going to be a concern, but obviously that ended up not being a factor.

I was trying to find that article the other day, where Edmond basically said “I don’t know what he was thinking when he committed there with that depth chart…” and the goes and commits to another deep position.

Love the film
After every play he just gets up and goes back to work. No show-boating. He expects to dominate all the time so it’s not a shocker when he does.
I guess my only concern (from the film)
is that his D-line was good enough that he was running through a lot of holes to get into the backfield. Big-time hitter and speed, but the routes were freeway-sized without a toll charge. And it’s Class 3A ball.
kendall thompson
are we gonna offer him at junior day or wait for wallace or vaughters
those hits look scary
wouldnt want to be on the other side of em
Agreed
The Offensive commits to OU need to take note. They might want to reconsider going to a Big 10 or Pac 10 school. Dang, our D is gonna be wicked.
GBR-2nd Junior day
Have you posted about who is coming and who is likely to be offered? Are we even going to be able to make any more offers? What a great problem to have, but dang, I want so many of these guys still out there.
There is an old list around somewhere
I’ll have an updated one probably on Friday.

Hey GoBR
Do we get a “Second Junior Day Primer”? You are doing great work. I am addicted.

Hey hates the guy with the football.
Let’s switch to the 46 and put him at safety.

And barely having been alive when they won their last Superbowl.
That gives me wood.

keep him at lb
dont wanna see him move to DE we really wont have a need and what i really like about this kid is his play recognition & tackling skills, this guy looks like a raw ray lewis, rolondo mcclain type mlb, trim the bad weight keep him in the middle of our d he will b a tackling machine, when hes hitting guys the play is over, when have the longhorns ever had that out of a lb? 182 tackles? thats sick at any class
Allow me to introduce you
when have the longhorns ever had that out of a lb?
Bobby meet Tommy. He also goes by Mr. Falcon, but around here we call him #60.

I love the intensity in this guy
I could tell he’s great 2 minutes into the video. He doesn’t just finish plays, he finishes them quickly and with a lot of power. His ability to run through the hole and then nab the guy on the sweep was beautiful.
Anyone have any idea what his 40 is? I looked at scout and rivals, but neither say anything though he is listed as a 5 star on scout, though that doesn’t mean as much on scout as it would if that were on rivals.
TEXAS FIGHT
Not sure if I've seen a 40
He would probably be listed at 4.55 to 4.6 I imagine, but he’s plenty fast enough to in a base 4-2-5.

IT
http://insidetexas.com/football/recruiting/recruit-detail.php?recruit_id=421
Inside Texas has him at 4.6 which is good for a guy his size but he clearly plays and thinks faster than that….this guy navigates traffic very well and doesnt overun plays…is it just me or are we starting to look like an SEC d, speed, depth and playmaking at every level, we’ve alway had a great dline and we pump the NFL dbs every year but the weakness has been at lb, id still like to see us go after wallace & vaughters but we can close the book on anybody else
How to have an SEC defense
Step one: make sure the rest of the conference runs vanilla, ineffective offenses.
I have beat wholesale ass for a whole lot less.
by burntorangehorn on Feb 24, 2010 7:18 AM CST up reply actions
fair
Step 2: make sure my offense is vanilla because my defense is so good i dont need much to win 4straight bcs titles? and when we won we had an SEC defensive cord as we do now
Crap
Yeah, Boom is a Saban guy, but Saban coached at Syracuse, West Virginia, and Michigan State before going to LSU. Good is good no matter what conference. And we have won quite a bit with EVERY D-Coordinator we have had here at Texas under Mack.
Don’t come here and Crow about the SEC.

The point is that the SEC defense echo-chamber is a tired meme
And its merits deserve more examination than most are willing to do.

Fantastic football specimen, hits with purpose...
Only watched half the film, but he looks poorly coached. His first step is backwards, has poor angles, and he runs around blockers. Works in 3A when you are that superior of an athlete, not going to cut it against OU. Don’t want to put any negativity on here when we get a commit from a top athlete, but glad he has some time to work on it. I see him coming off the end anyway, not a LB. Love your stuff GOBR.
?
We definitely saw two different players. The only time I saw him take a step back was in pass coverage. The rest of the time he is moving forward at the snap. It is not that he runs around blockers so much as he takes pretty good angles. I doubt seriously very many of those kids want to get in his way once he takes several steps. He has good feet for a big guy who is probably carrying too much weight.
Looking forward to the 2nd Jr Day Primer GOBR . Committ other GG
Given the current recruiting streak Texas is on , we just have to put our faith in the coaches and let the numbers sort themselves out. Here’s to Texas hitting their numbers with 4 stars and waiting for Vaughters, Westerman, Haggerty and please God, Malcolm Brown.

Middle Linebacker
I am not sure whether this would be a good fit for the buck position… He seems to be reading the formations and plays very well, his eyes are roving the offense until he makes a decision. This is a middle linebacker in the making
He is not as fast as Tevin Jackson. Also nowhere near the same body type. Great tackler and really explodes once he decides who ge is going to go hit. Really nice MLB prospect. Really doubt he runs a 4.6 but it doesn’t matter he explodes into the ball carrier. Looks have have great instincts. Change his body composition a little and you could have a 4 year starter at MLB.

I couldn't tell his body composition
With the pads, motion and quality of video.

I’m guessing he has slightly more iron than usual.

I was thinking MLB as well...
Maybe we develop a spread defense and a run defense with the depth we are getting. This kid could stop a train.

What's tough about these HS films,
beyond the quality of competition and the quality of the film, is that coaches (duh!!!) utilize their personnel the best way they can . . .
And letting SE get a running start into a hole is a near-sure way for play disruption. In other words, what he’s doing in HS is not something he’ll be able to do at the college level. Doesn’t mean he’s not a mega-talent (I think he is), but he’s made to look darn good by how the coach is using him in Daingerfield’s defensive scheme.
First thoughts that come to mind
I just dont see many people being able to break his tackles in the future. He swallows opponents.
