Herschel Sims Will Not Attend Second Junior Day
The deepest running back class in the state just got a little bit smaller once again on Wednesday evening in terms of Texas recruiting when news trickled out that Abilene running back sensation Herschel Sims will not attend the second Texas Junior Day this weekend.
Conventional wisdom holds that the Texas coaches probably conveyed to Sims that he was not going to receive an offer at the event and Sims decided it was not worth his time to travel to Austin.
After the commitment of Brandon Williams to Baylor and the news on Sims, landing one of Malcolm Brown or Aaron Green has become even more important for Texas and the developments may also open the door for The Woodlands running back Daniel Lasco to receive an offer, but it sounds like Texas intends to focus on Brown and Green in an effort to let them know that they are the top targets on the board for the Longhorns.

Lasco
Is there any chance he is thrown an offer as an athlete strictly due to his speed?
Possible
I think he actually could be a good safety, but I think his skills would be a bit redundant there with Evans and Thompson there, but I was actually quite impressed with his video when it finally came out and that changed my mind a bit — I think he could definitely play some running back or a running back/wide receiver hybrid, though I think he would be a change of pace guy because he doesn’t appear to have to frame to take a lot of hits and he’s kind of an upright runner.
I think an offer for Lasco would probably be as a running back.

I have to wonder if he has a position preference
And I do wonder if it would influence his decision much, if offered. Mack doesn’t seem to sugarcoat his plans for what position he wants a guy to play, which has scared off a few guys.
And yes, I’m thinking about Russell Shepard, who will now play only WR for LSU. So tell me, kids, why would you trust what Les Miles says?

Talk about your all time backfires.
This isn’t working out for Shepard as planned.

Shepard has made his own mistakes too
They ran some special formations for him, and when he came on the field he didn’t even line up right. I forget which game it was, but they had to call a timeout, and then he came out in the wrong line up again. At that point I knew he was no quarterback regardless of his arm. He is a amazing with the ball in a some space though.
Oh yea, no doubt
Granted I only watched a few LSU games this year I did see what you were talking about. I just kind of wish he would have came to this realization that QB was not his future when the good guys were still after him.

hope he has success
russell is an awesome kid and i truly hope he has success. was pulling for him to play qb, but if you can’t even beat out jarrett lee it’s not a good sign.

Sims is the one RB I really want A&M to land. To me he is a definite take.

We'll have to trust the coaches on this one
To my amateur eye, Sims looked like a definite take.

trust the coaches? he canceled the trip. is it possible he canceled because of something they said? sure. something like “malcolm brown committed last night, you probably won’t get an offer this weekend”? sure. but is it definitive? no.
by Displaced Longhorn on Feb 25, 2010 8:50 AM CST up reply actions
I'm fully aware that he canceled the trip.
I can read, much to my own surprise. But I think that the chances are that he canceled the trip because he received information from the coaches that he would not receive a scholarship offer. It could be a money issue as well, if he did indeed cancel his trip to OU, or it’s possible that both OU and UT informed him that he wouldn’t receive offers, which I would guess could be a result of either academic or legal issues. And of course someone else mentioned it could be a lack of funds for the trip, which would certainly be unfortunate and understandable.
If “definitive” is the standard for discussing an issue, then you’re setting the bar too high for the internet, IMO.

Oh Dear.
This just confirms our top prospects are Brown and Green. Sounds good to me.
by DaGoose on Feb 25, 2010 7:59 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
But no back up plan?
I guess the coaches feel really good about our chances of landing one of the two studs.
uhh oh
I think he canceled on ou two weeks ago for there first junior day. It may be just a money problem.
Went to OSU instead
But will be at the second one. This definitely sounds a bit different. Its looking very good that OU will get Marquez which will leave room for only one other RB. Sounds like Mack is putting his eggs in the Brown/Green basket and if so, this move could end up being smart. If Sims ends up committing with OU (which looks likely now seeing how he didn’t seem to like OSU at all) then I don’t see any way that they can keep pursuing Brown, who is basically between the Horns and Sooners.

Some don't have it.
And it takes more than gas money to take a weekend trip. Some people don’t even have cars that are safe to take on highway trips.

ACU has one of the top non-D1 track programs in the country
So I visited them the same week as I did programs like Baylor, TCU, etc. While I actually liked ACU for a lot of reasons, the town was just depressing.

Maybe Sims is putting out vibes through his coach
that he is going to shop the field, a la Seastrunk? Maybe he does not have the grades for an early offer?
What is the % of junior day attendees that actually receive a Mack Brown offer?
"Football is an incredible game. Sometimes it's so incredible, it's unbelievable." - Tom Landry
There is nothing to suggest that Sims
is anything less than a stand-up kid and, at the least, a solid student. In my opinion, this is more about his small stature and a commitment by the staff to make Green and Brown their priorities.
For this Junior Day, I wouldn’t expect more than 20% of the kids to receive offers.

I hope our chances with Brown are still good..
Do you think we are still recruiting Brandon Williams? And who do you think will commit this weekend?
They may send out some feelers to Williams at some point
but I don’t think Texas is actively recruiting him.
As far as possible commitments this weekend, I’ll have some thoughts on that tomorrow.

It's all about Malcolm Brown, according to Geoff Ketchum
Ketch is absolutely in love with Brown, ranking him as the 2nd best Texas HS running back in the last 15 years (right behind AP and ahead of Ced Benson). Said he’s better right now than Peterson was after his jr year. Also said he runs like Benson, but has an extra gear.
We’ll see.
I had some doubts about Brown
but I think I’m starting to come around on him. I certainly haven’t seen anyone catch him from behind and being right in front of him isn’t the safest place either.

Well you better erase your doubts Ghost...
because with Green’s ties in Nebraska, he’s our only hope for a stud RB!

Brown ahead of Benson?
That’s ridiculous! Cedric was a beast in high school and had one of the greatest high school careers ever in the state. Cedric was the single most important reason behind 3 consecutive state championships in 5A Texas football. Ketchum makes some crazy statements, but this has to be one of his dumbest.
Ummm, not so sure.
Cedric was amazing in HS but he definitely didn’t have that elite-speed gear. However, I still thought he was the best RB in the country during the same year that traitor AD was “all the rage” as a freshman and 2nd in the Heisman vote. And, he had the better college career than AD. Just because he was great doesn’t mean his legend is untouchable.
just a numbers game
after only taking one back each of the last two years they almost have to take two this year as a hedge against attrition/injury. Sims is a good enough talent to offer and take even if it means you only get one of Brown/Green. After watching jr. highlights I think Brown is clearly the best of the backs whose names are at the top of all the lists, but I’d still want to push hard for one of Green/Williams/Sims, especially without a commitment from Brown in hand. I’d hate to hold out for Brown/Green and end up with nobody.
As an Abilene guy, I would love for Sims to come to Austin
But we can’t take them all, and I’ll trust the coaches judgment on who their top targets are.

I'm starting to get that Christine Michael feeling again
I don’t like this. It’s the same old ‘gotta have a big back’ story. I’ll shut up about it until next year but Sims has the goods to be an explosive back.
Side note: Former Longhorn Willie Mack Garza is apparently recruiting Texas for USC and has Sims and Sedrick Flowers on his list.

Brown is not a "big back"
in the mold of Whaley or Shead, both of whom are tall and run pretty upright. Brown probably has the perfect build for a running back at around 5-10 — he was shorter than me when I walked past him at the spring game, but he’s solidly built and has a center of gravity right where you want it and great balance, which is why he can run through so many arm tackles. Powerful, yes, strong, yes, but no comparison to the takes in the last two years.

Brown reminds me of Cedric Benson
but Sims has an extra gear and was just sick in the playoffs, he ran for something like 270 yards against Cedar Hill in the playoffs with a 95-yd touchdown if I recall correctly. I think Sims is only an inch shorter than Brown and he catches the ball well.
I haven’t seen either one in person so I’ll defer but it would be nice to have a JC-type home run threat if we don’t get Aaron Green. I’ve thought he’ll choose OUsucks anyway.
