2010 Spring Depth chart (no official)
ored at home. It's pouring outside. Nothing on TV and I'm not an expert on baseball (I'm trying to understand the game. I'm already a Taylor Jungmann, Kevin Keyes and Brandon Loy fan). I made a depth chart based on Mack Brown's words. I used the MB-TF website's format.
I used my imagination and my guess with the empty spots (in orange)... What do you think? please dont kill me, its the first time I do a thing like this.
PD: Sorry if I make any grammatical or spelling mistakes (I´m not an english native speaker).
Justification:
- OL: Mack didn't talk about the 2nd string so I put the more logical (I think) subtitutes.
- WR's: Mack only mentioned that Timmons was backing up Williams at split end, so I wrote Fitzhenry and Hales in the others spots.
- H-Backs: I dont really know the orden, but I guess its like I wrote it...
- C: I cant find any other on the roster.

Justification on D:
- Safeties: Mack didnt specified where will be playing any of the safeties.
- Eryon Barnett: I know he'll be limited at first workouts but I wanted to put him on CB spot behind Williams and Curtis Brown.
- Jared Norton: Like Barnett but I forgot to add him, sorry... My thought is that he'll be the MLB starter at the end of the spring.
- Nickel: As Mack didnt mentioned, neither do I.
ST's:
- Returners: So many returners out for this spring...
- Holder: Harris was the backup last year...
- DS: No changes from last year.

I hope Chiles, Wiliams and Kirkendoll really step it up this year.
Right now my confidence in them on a scale from 1-10 is about a 3. Mostly because their national championship performance is still fresh in my mind.

I still have my money on Williams being a playmaker
I know he’s made his mistakes, but he’s also shown he’s willing to work hard and really wants to make it happen. He was one mis-timed jump away from being a hero in the NC game.
I fully expect Willams to be a threat with GG tossing the ball.
Has he shown he's willing to work hard?
I’m asking in all seriousness, not because I want to contradict you, but because I just honestly haven’t seen anything of him that makes me think he works relatively hard. He seems lazy in his catches and lazy in his routes.

Yes
He really seems lazy when it comes to making sure he runs the right route and actually sticks to what he knows he’s supposed to do when the ball is thrown his way. He seems to busy to bother with catching.

Chiles stopping on his routes
Uggghhh. What is he thinking? I’m just not sold on him. I am thinking some Feshmen may see significant time.
Don't mean to defend him
but McCoy never even tried to hit anyone on the clear-out routes, which was what Chiles was running in the NC game. His attitude on the field was poor all year, don’t know what his problem was. The good news is that Gilbert is actually willing to try to hit someone on those routes and that’s something that the offense needs once or twice a game. It’s kind of like a constraint play in that throwing that pass will help keep the safety on that side of the field honest and maybe even occupy him on some plays to free everything else up underneath.

How many times did McCoy have to throw to Chiles during those 5 plays?…

He just didn't seem to have that elite player spark
It really was like he was going 80% all the time. I still can’t figure out if that is all he has or if he was just loafing. Either way I was really hoping for more from him.
Maybe some clear opportunity with Shipley gone will put the spring back in his step. He always seemed to perform a little better once he got his frist catch and a few yards—it would start to get him more fired up and in the game. But, as a leader and veteran he needs to be the one that propels himself into the game instead of waiting for it to happen for him, imo.
He Just Doesn't Seem That Good
Never has. When he was QB – Colt was a better runner. Didn’t show any elusiveness at all. At WR – a freshman track guy comes in and looks a whole lot better. My guess is that Davis is far better. Prolly White too.
Colt
was his arm strong enough to make the out route throws?
Chiles just looked like he wasn’t comfortable last year. Hopefully that will change in his second year at WR. He looked like he was thinking too much. The coaches seem to know something we don’t.
Guilt factor
It is almost like he is getting a “pass” because of how things went down at QB. Everyone needs to let that go and now that Colt is gone maybe it should be a fresh start. For spring he probably deserves that spot, but when the guys come in at fall he has got to know that he has some talented FR that will be fighting for his spot. Maybe Coach Brown was talking to him about earning your spot in the spring or you will lose it in the fall. My money is that by the end of the year it will be Mike Davis as the starter and not J. Chiles.
Looks pretty accurate to me
Drav. Johnson has not played in two years in the program, so that’s a “zero” spot this spring . . . E Acho gets it in the fall, and Hicks or TJackson is the probable backup . . . I’d guess Jeffcoat takes Mims’ spot in the summer . . . Bible or Dorsey or both will crack the two-deep at DT come August . . . Steve Moore is probably the backup at center (maybe Walters, if he gets healthy; maybe Esponoza) . . .
WR also concerns me. I’m guessing it does Mack and GD, which could be an unspoken reason to start talking two-back offense and more inside/downhill/power running.
I worry less abouthe O-line depth now than will be the case a year from now.

Yeah, I got the impression from Mack's presser that he wasn't unhappy w/ the weight
Whaley might just be setting up to be CoJo 2.
Mack said he was in 'great shape'..nt

So, we gonna move him to FB, HB, TE or the defense?
We already have Cody with the same build in the backfield.
Cody's got a couple of years on Whaley
Whaley might just be in training to take over when Cody has to leave.
Whaley is reminding me of Henry Melton
We let Melton melt away at RB for a couple years before moving him to defense. I don’t think Whaley stays as a RB. Whaley seems like too good of an athlete for his size to not find a position where he can get onto the field more.
that may be true
But he might also get featured more ( along w/ CoJo ) if Mack is serious about moving to a two-back scheme, than Melton did.
Not sure I see Vaccaro as a 3rd stringer as he pretty good as a frosh
Assuming he stays clean in his private life.
Other than that the chart looks pretty accurate. Kudos
And that's assuming
No incoming freshman crack the rotation too
Based on everything else we know about him
that’s a very strong possibility.
Just curious, what are you basing this off of?
I think he is pretty raw on the mental aspect of the game.
He couldn’t have had more than 50 non-special team plays last year. Seems like a limited range to begin with, couple that with being a true freshman, I don’t see how any judgment could be made about his mental acuity.

I'd love to see Vacarro and Scott starting at Safety in 2010.
They can really laid the wood. I can’t imagine anybody wanting to catch a ball with them in their sights. They will also provide some better run support than we have had of late.
No DJ Monroe?
I figured him as ahead of Fitzhenry or Hales, or maybe back at tailback.

monroe will prolly be used as some kind of hybrid with no set position.
sort of like RT in 05

That'd be ideal, I've always thought.

Monroe is out with a hamstring injury
Also I think Will Harvey is gone…?
And I know this is just for spring, but we can expect that Goodwin will be in that WR rotation in the fall, quite possibly a starter…
Track Star
I think it is very cool that he is getting to fulfill his potential at track also and may be a future Olympian. Coach Brown said his grades were great too and he seemed very impressed with him. I’m a huge Goodwin fan and love it when he is on the field.
+ 1 That Kid is Money at WR
I think he will be our best WR next year. He is a baller – and with his natural ability he can skip a spring practice without incident. In all honesty, I would put Chiles and Kirk on the pine and see what Goodwin and Mike Davis could do.
Timmons
I think he’ll be pretty good next year
I haven't seen Timmons, but word is that he is good
Goodwin really is elite. I remember watching his recruiting video and although I don’t know that much, I thought he looked amazing and I thought he might be a secret weapon. He was not that highly recruited or touted really for how good he is, but the track commitment probably skewed it.
E. Jones
I like him at the Buck position next year instead of Okafor.
+1
Okafor could stand a spell at DE and build another year of playing time/confidence. This D will be amazing this year again, but I think even more physical than last year, including Gideon.
Where's Goodwin?
He could be a beast in the slot. I don’t think I would have too many problems with the dreaded GD screen if it is going to him, especially with the size we can put on the outside.
Also, I know that everybody is on the Tre Newton bandwagon (and I would have no problem with him getting the starts), but I’m not going to give up on Fozzy, especially in is senior season. If he just gets comfortable reading blocks this offseason I think he could be a more dangerous weapon that Tre. The decision to funnel the entire offense through Colt the last two years made it hard for any of the backs to step up, so hopefully we’ll find out that we’ve been underutilizing the talent we have at the RB position this year.
If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!
Oh yeah
I was thinking of Vondrell, who I hope will have drifted into “afterthought” status by now. Any snaps he gets are wasted snaps. I still stand by what I said about Fozzy; being a junior means stepping up, and we know he has the talent.
Does anybody remember the ’07 Holiday Bowl, the coaches put in Chiles and McGee (I think it was called the Q Package at that point) and they ran a speed option that broke for a huge touchdown? I thought that was a signal that we would have an awesome contingency backfield for the next few years, and both players have proven to be disappointments (IMO). So now I harbor some (probably unjust) resentment towards McGee and Chiles for failing to follow up.
