QB Competition/Controversy coming this Spring?

With the signing of Connor Wood and Case McCoy, there will be a fierce competition come spring practice.  Wood and McCoy are already enrolled at UT which leads me to believe they will hit the ground running for spring practice.

Star-divide

Garrett Gilbery obviously will have the upper hand given his experience from the National Championship game against Alabama.  I'm pretty sure Connor Wood and Case McCoy didn't come in early to be a backup and want to vie thier way as the starting QB.  I'm thinking one or them might end up redshirting.  What do you think?

You sure Chase McCoy isn't a real person?

There’s either a Chase or a Chance that’s the middle brother that went to acu and played for a few years. Sucks to be the one McCoy nobody knows anything about….

Are you sure?

Okay, fine. Oklahomans are people too.

Chance is the other brother according to Wiki.

or you would have known that it was Case not chase.it couldnt be all just coincidence that literally every sincgle place you look spelled it Case.

I don't think there is a question here at all.

You may have found something that says otherwise, but I don’t think there is a chance in hell that GG does not start, barring an injury.

Umm..GG is starting no matter what anyone does.

John Paul Floyd! Awesome!

Too bad Tyler Walker’s hair left…could have had some real competition.

Gilbert is the starting QB without doubt. The issue is who the 2nd string backup is, as Mack’s presser has led us to believe that there will be a serious spring competition for that role.

If Case or Connor were to win it, that would leave them with only one year of separation between Gilbert and the winner (we’ll just call him “C”). In that case, C would have only one year in which he were to enter as the favorite for the QB job, unless Gilbert leaves early or suffers a major injury.

I think Mack is being extra cautious after coming off years where A) Being a VY injury away from having Matt Nordgren as your starting QB, B) Having a “never had a snap” Colt having to face a #1 OSU team in his second college game, and C) Having a “never had a meaningful snap” GG having to play for a National Championship win.

All things being equal, I think you’d like to see Harris win the backup job and have both Case and Connor redshirt, but it doesn’t look like Mack is going to play things that way. Hopefully Sherrod has a nice post-grad job in the real world lined up.

Childs May Be Part of Attrition

Just a guess, but if I were a team captain and saw the MNC film where Childs quit on a route during a National Championship Game on National TV while the rest of my team played their guts out for the Longhorn Nation and a young freshman QB, then I would ask the coaches for his jersey.

John Childs or Chiles
Chase McCoy or Case
John Paul Jones or Floyd?

by orangetower on Feb 5, 2010 5:38 PM CST up reply actions

John Paul Jones or Floyd?

Neither. John Paul Stevens will be the backup QB. He’s been throwing some pretty tight spirals, even in losing efforts.

by burntorangehorn on Feb 5, 2010 6:25 PM CST up reply actions

Jersey

I hope you’re right. I think Gilbert would be even better if he got his old “lucky number 7” back. Chiles has certainly brought it shame.

Every time I feel down and depressed, I think of seven simple words by a true wise man, Matt Leinart: "I still think we're the better team" and I usually end up hurting myself by laughing so hard.

Garrett Gilbery obviously will have the upper hand given his experience from the National Championship game against Alabama.

Actually, the majority of his “upper handedness” will come from the fact that he is a year older (thus physically more developed) and has been practicing in the system for a year.

by UT_BKC on Feb 5, 2010 3:06 PM CST reply actions

To clarify, while I think he probably got something out of the MNC game, I think he gained much more experience from his practice and play throughout the year.

by UT_BKC on Feb 5, 2010 3:07 PM CST up reply actions

That's what confused me

It seemed to me that you were saying that his physical maturity, not his full year of experience (to include backup snaps in practice, mop-up duty in games, and most of the BCSCG), was the majority of his advantage, and I fully disagree.

Competition. Of course. You hope for that.

Controversy — that’ll be what us hacks create in our idle hours.

Personal guess: Harris is No. 2 through about the Nebraska game, to hedge against throwing a true frosh out there against Tech, OU, Huskers . . . after that, Harris drops to No. 3 (because there’s no point in game and practice snaps for a sub who won’t be back), and the best of the two signees is No. 2.

CWood is my guess.

After signing the best receiving corps in the nation and Jaxson Shipley and Trey Metoyer hopefully waiting in the wings you would think these QB’s are drueling to the point of dehydration.

I don’t know about these other guys you have, but to do what he did, given his experience and age was very impressive.

by captainqtp on Feb 5, 2010 7:23 PM CST reply actions

Gilbert will have a very long leash, and the benefit of the doubt

doesn’t matter if Wood or McCoy outplays him in the spring. The MNC experience will give him priority over the others barring a complete loss of ability to play QB. I will not be surprised if one of the backups transfer, and I can only hope it doesn’t come back to bite us.

by goingforthecorner on Feb 5, 2010 7:33 PM CST reply actions

like Jevon Snead?

if he was still backup for Colt McCoy in the National Championship, maybe the offense doesn’t skip a beat.

by Ryan2907 on Feb 5, 2010 7:56 PM CST up reply actions

Wow, I couldn't disagree more

If Woods outplays Gilbert during spring practices he should be the starter. The last time Coach Brown got into trouble was when he assigned starting positions and playing time by seniority and experience only. Remember Kindle waiting behind the seniors who had “bled for the school?” Never again. Gilbert is going to have to go in and earn the starting QB job. I expect him to do that. But at Texas, nothing should be handed to anyone.

huge....quickly

by TexasGarcia37 on Feb 5, 2010 9:15 PM CST up reply actions

don't forget what he did in 4A Texas HS Football

his gaudy stats in HS proves he CAN be a successful starting QB for the texas longhorns…

…apprenticed under Colt, THE most successful starting QB in Longhorn history…

…appeared in 9 games, including performing amazingly well on the biggest stage in college football…

…is physically maturing/bulking and has strong competitive fire

real question is who will back him up…if GG gets injured, im afraid Mack puts in Sherrod and GD calls running plays entirely until GG recovers…yikes

by trueorangeblood on Feb 5, 2010 8:29 PM CST reply actions

its ok.

so longs as its not the nc game we can just send out the boys in the trenches and kill the opposing qb.

Whoa....

Gota disagree with you saying Coly is the most sucessful QB in Longhorn History. VY the clear and obvious choice.

Vince Young = Greatness

by PineypointG on Feb 6, 2010 11:46 AM CST up reply actions

You think so?

For one season, sure. For a career? Probably not.

by burntorangehorn on Feb 6, 2010 10:16 PM CST up reply actions

Absolutely.

I love Colt just as much as anyone on this site. But, VY is a Champion and Colt unfortunately is not. TOB said the most sucessful QB in Longhorn history. Its hard to argue that the QB without the championship is more sucessful than the QB with one.

Vince Young = Greatness

by PineypointG on Feb 6, 2010 11:41 PM CST up reply actions

I don't buy that one championship overrides almost twice as many wins.

And that’s particularly true when the supporting cast of one was far superior to that for the other, and also when it’s strongly possible that the only reason one of them

If the ONLY goal is to win a national championship, then yes, VY was more successful. But I would caution against that line of thinking, because if the national title is the one criterion by which to judge, then Colt, like all other non-VY QBs since 1970, had zero success.

by burntorangehorn on Feb 7, 2010 1:46 PM CST up reply actions

So, what you're saying is...

You’d rather have Tee Martin than Peyton Manning?

Every time I feel down and depressed, I think of seven simple words by a true wise man, Matt Leinart: "I still think we're the better team" and I usually end up hurting myself by laughing so hard.

by SurferHorn257 on Feb 8, 2010 8:55 AM CST up reply actions

No...

I’m saying that Vince Young is better than Colt McCoy. Not only because of the Championship. Because he was a better overall player. McCoy was great at Texas. VY was transcendent. There is a difference. And again, I hope I don’t come off as anti McCoy because that’s not the case at all. I love Colt, but let’s not lose scope only 4 years out. VY was arguably the greatest player ever in college football history. I think it’s very reasonable to speculate that if VY would have played 4 full seasons instead of 2.5 that he would have amassed just as many wins as Colt. Taking nothing away from Colt, VY was/is the better QB.

Vince Young = Greatness

by PineypointG on Feb 8, 2010 9:26 AM CST up reply actions

yeah..

but Lake Travis did the same thing w/o Gilbert. I think Gilbert is a stud though, but the high school stats don"t mean sh8t.

by Longhorns84 on Feb 7, 2010 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

Gilbert is going to start.

I’m not exactly sure who Mack would put next. Maybe somebody with the same QB smarts and intelligence? I’m comparing Colt to Garrett here. While both are great QB’s, they have a different style of playing. I think Davis caters a little to his starting QB, thus, your playbook for the past few years. When Gilbert starts, it only makes sense to let the guy with the same playing style wait in the wings. This is what happened in the MNC Game and it kinda bit Mack and Greg in the ass. This would prevent the situation from happening again.

This is all speculation and opinion. Don’t Beergut me.

How I see it

If Garrett Gilbet get the starting roll, Connor Wood redshirts and Case McCoy is backup if he shows well in spring and pre-season practice. Sherrod Harris would be backup if he’s best 2nd option.

by Ryan2907 on Feb 6, 2010 9:20 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Agree, there's no way in the burnt orange world that Gilbert is not the starter next year

but let’s not blame the coaches for doing something wrong. Colt was the best player in the country for 2 years running and Gilbert was still a true freshman when called upon. He played admirably but Colt would have been better. No scheme or preparation in the world would have changed that.

IMO, Gilbert starts next year no matter what, Sherrod is the backup no matter what, and Wood & McCoy BOTH redshirt next year – barring an injury to either GG or SH. Don’t waste the redshirt on ‘em if they’re probably not going to help much anyway. Sherrod is better than most think. If they don’t BOTH redshirt, then the one who does redshirt this year will probably be the starter in 2013 or 2014. Wood may be the most physically gifted to do this but Chase may pull another pleasant surprise ‘Colt McCoy’ on us and shock us all. I don’t know how the coaches decide something like this but it’s going to be a treat to watch all these guys over the next 5 years of Longhorn football.

by robthecob on Feb 6, 2010 9:58 AM CST up reply actions

Gilbert starts for sure...

The battle I would like to see is a next years RB battle between Herschel Sims, Malcolm Brown, Tre’ Newton, Traylon Shead, & Chris Whaley.
