Beyond the 2010 season
Now that we’ve got 2010’s star-studded class signed and sealed (most of the delivery will come in June), let’s sit back awhile. Relax. Enjoy the good feeling.
And start eyeing the Class of 2011.
Most of the in-state blue-chippers will visit campus for one of Texas’ two Junior Day weekends this month. Expect commitments to begin within a week, immediately after this weekend’s (Feb. 12-14) visits. With an eye on that, a look at how the football roster stacks up BEYOND the 2010 season:
Needs – Cornerback and the offensive line have to be priorities for the 2011 class. Both will suffer major senior losses following the 2010 season. After signing between five and seven wide receivers (depending on positional decisions); six defensive linemen, and a pair of quarterbacks last week, those positions will be lower priorities in the next signing class. (Five-star talents are always welcome, of course. Any position accepted.)
Corners Curtis Brown and Chykie Brown are seniors; Aaron Williams is a junior who probably won’t get to senior status. One corner (Marcus Davis) left the program two months ago. Another, Eryon Barnett, had to be shut down after one game last fall. A couple of last week’s signees (A.J. White, Carrington Byndom) apparently will play corner; Bryant Jackson might be a CB. Need: Critically high.
Five offensive linemen – Michael Huey, Kyle Hix, Tray Allen, Britt Mitchell and Steve Moore – are seniors. Hix and Huey will start, Allen likely will, Mitchell could. Four signees from 2009 redshirted so there is some depth up front, but limited experience, behind the seniors. David Snow is this year’s lone junior offensive lineman; sophomores Luke Poehlmann and Mark Buchanan played briefly as redshirt freshmen in 2009. Tackle will be a major focus in the 2011 class, but all five positions could be covered. Need: High.
Other areas of the team are better fortified. Two true freshmen played at defensive end in 2009 and two of 2010’s most heralded players are ends. Tackle again will be thin this fall, but three tackles redshirted in ’09 and three more were signed last week. Linebackers Jared Norton and Dustin Earnest are seniors and two returning starters, Keenan Robinson and Emmanuel Acho, are juniors. A pair of linebackers redshirted last fall, and three – including blue-chip talents Tevin Jackson and Jordan Hicks – just signed. At safety, four juniors and one sophomore have game experience. Needs: Two safeties, an end, at least one tackle (can never have too many of these).
The coaches may take a quarterback – if one is willing to come on the heels of three QBs joining the team in 2009-10. Running back will be a priority, and the quality and volume of talent at that position may never be better than in 2011. The best of the current backs are sophomores and freshmen – and fans are still looking for that “next big thing” running back. A least one tight end can be expected to sign, and no more than two wide receivers. Needs: Two running backs, 1 or 2 tight ends.
The 2010 senior class will be 16-18 players, so the 2011 signing class will top 20 and could run 22-23.

I thought this was going to be for basketball
Got a little scared I have to admit.
DBs, O-line, TEs and RBs have to be our focus in this recruiting class. You hit the nail on the head with everything you said. Mack even said he wishes that he could have taken one more O-lineman in 2010…
"The best decision I ever made was coming to Texas," James said. "The second-best decision was coming back."
Basketball will be intriguing
Texas loses James, Pittman and Mason for sure—that’s 3 of 5 starters. They could also potentially lose Hamilton and Bradley to the NBA. Presumably Jai Lucas will pick up a scholarship after paying his way for a year. Tristan Thompson has signed his LOI. That leaves 1 available scholarship for sure, which Barnes is currently holding for Cory Joseph. If Hamilton and/or Bradley were to jump, Barnes could dive into recruiting, but pickings will be slim. Expect a Varez Ward type “who dat” pickup.
Next year:
PG: Dogus Balbay (starter), Jai Lucas, J’Covan Brown, potentially Cory Joseph
SG: Avery Bradley (starter—hopefully), Varez Ward
SF: Jordan Hamilton (starter—hopefully), Shawn Williams
PF: Gary Johnson (starter), Alexei Wangmene
C: Tristan Thompson (starter), Clint Chapman, Matt Hill
Barnes
I hope the b-ball team starts looking at players that can shoot,,,,,,free throws.
I’m not sure that I buy that either Bradely or Hamilton is playing consistently enough to jump to the NBA. Maybe Bradley. Not JH. He’s had ONE good game. The rest of have been either solid or horrible. Stats:
9.3 pts, 3.2 rebs, 1.6 Ass, 1.2 TO on 17.7 minutes.
That’s to go with 39.7% shooting, 36.7% from Three point. His free throw shooting is only 63.9%.
None of that says one and done to me.
I think both Bradley and Hamilton stay one more year
they can be potential lottery picks 2 years from now, not this year.

It’s not so much about what you in college as it is how much potential you have to play in the pros. As Coach Fran mentioned, Hamilton is likely the best NBA prospect on the team. Bradley, while short, still has a pretty sweet J and some lockdown D. Besides, it’s early February…both players still have another month of Big XII play and the NCAAs to prove themselves.
I hope they come back too, but it’s no guarantee.
what type of lineman
hey im in the army longtime longhorn fan. gobr what type of lineman are we recruting in 2011 guys that are maulers of zone blockers
Maulers!!!
"The best decision I ever made was coming to Texas," James said. "The second-best decision was coming back."
christian westermans
also gobr do we lead for him,is he coming to junior day?
Barnett
I’ve also been worried about corner. We should be fine next year, but after that we could be in trouble. Remind me of what happened to Barnett — did he have trouble at the position, or was he pulled for an injury?
Also, is tcuhorns the old major vs. simms? I’m leaning towards “no,” because he ended a question with a question mark.
Info on Barnett from a late September GoBR report:
" . . . services are reporting that freshman defensive back Eryon Barnett will miss the rest of the season after injuring his shoulder."
That was after last year’s opener with La.-Monroe. OL Mason Walters hurt his foot in the same game, and neither played again. No indication that Barnett won’t be ready for spring training (Walters, however, is still out).
Walters
was questionable the whole season. It tells me that he could of played, but they were trying to save him. The same with C. Howell.
I think that "questionable" was Mack speak for
I ain’t gonna tell you.
Walters hurt his foot (arch, I believe) in summer drills, and tried to play through it. Got hurt in the opener, and Mack keps saying “not this week,” indicating he might play next week. After about a month of that, they KNEW he wasn’t going to play right away and probably figured since he could redshirt, they’d let that happen. Folks like the Statesman or other print dailies or the TV types, who have better access than bloggers, never pursued the point.
Same with Howell. He suffered a concussion in practice the week of the OU game. He was in bed for a week and wasn’t cleared for any drills for some time. There was no way he was coming back (unless we’d had 2 defensive tackles go down). And, he and the team got lucky because he played only against La.-Monroe, Wyoming and UTEP, so when he was shut down he’d played in only three games. That makes him eligible for a redshirt on the 30 percent rule.
