Way too early 2010 Football Season predictions
Its well known that my reactions and "insight" to Longhorn basketball and other topics on this site has been nothing short of ridiculous and short sighted. However, I am asking everyone to put away the hatchets for a second and discuss their thoughts on the upcoming Longhorn football season. My gut tells me that some of the following proposals will come true, and although it is the 1st day total football offseason, it is never too soon to begin talk of the future.
In no particular order, I offer up the following fearless predictions:
1.) We will go 11-3 next year, with a win in the Fiesta Bowl over Boise State. Losses will come at Nebraska, OU, and either at TTU or A&M. Its not like I dont think we can win 'em all, its just that next years team will be breaking in a relatively new QB and half an offensive line.
2.) Running game issues will continue, as the three headed monster of Newton-Whaley-Johnson averages 115 ypg on the ground throughout the season.
3.) Kenny Vaccaro will get kicked off the team sometime next season for an off the field issue. Either gonna be something with alcohol or an on campus fight. Note: Most surefire out of all the predictions.
4.) Mason Walters will never see the field in pads the rest of his career. Just too much weight on someone who's frame can't handle it. See: Yao Ming. Just a hunch
5.) James Kirkendoll will be our #1 receiver all year. Not the next Quan, but will have hands like glue and make some big plays that win us games in the clutch next season.
6.) Biggest freshman impact will come from Mike Davis when he takes over John Chiles starting spot midway through the season.
7.) Finally, Mack Brown will retire after this season, along with McWhorter and GD, leaving Applewhite at OC and new spots for RB and OL coach to be filled.
Thats it. Yes, I know there is very little basis for what is above, but thought this might be fun to just speculate on next years team. Feel free to agree, disagree, or add your own! Hook em!

predictions
1)i say we go 12-2 win against oh say Tennessee next year
2) our running game doesn’t improve dramatically but we use it alot more especially for alot of play action type passes.
3) top reciver is goodwin, he blows by everyone else and makes some crazy catches.
4) our defense ranks in the top 5 Nationally. Great against the run, and sound overall but possibly prone to giving up the long ball on occasion especially against better teams.
5) McWhorter retires after the end of the season. Greg Davis actually makes a few calls people like, but is still hated by just about everyone.
6) Our recruiting takes a little bit of a hit. we get more recruits nationally but end up with a 6-7 ranked class
Predictions
1. 11 – 3…yeah, that’s about right. Not sure it gets us a BCS bid…maybe Alamo Bowl.
2. Our OL is a mess coming out of Spring football, hampering any development in the running game.
2a. Tre is the starter, but DJ plays a lot as Davis works the zone read (which he likes to do with young QBs) back into the offense.
2b. Tre is brittle so Fozzy, Whaley, and CJ get a lot of PT. Maybe Hills gets into the mix.
2c. Either way its runningback by committee again, with not much success.
3. Vaccaro keeps it (barely) under together and does not self-destruct. He gets some PT in a rather depleted safety position, but ends up costing us a game with a personal foul.
4. I’m afraid you’re right about Walters. Should’ve gone after one more OL recruit instead of 5 WRs.
5. Kirkendoll…hands of glue? You’re kidding, right? Drops way too many passes. This is the year of Malcolm Williams. His turn to step up. Goodwin will definitely be a key receiver.
6. Agree Chiles loses his position. Davis and White show great things as they rotate in Chiles former slot.
7. Mack does not retire, but McWhorter does. With our running game once again floundering, MB finally realizes he needs a real RB coach and realigns his coaching staff, moving Applewhite to QB coach and hiring Priest Holmes to coach the backs…immediately improving our chance to land Sims or Green.
7. Harris, Graham, Grant, or Matthews…SOMEONE emerges from Spring football as the true TE. Otherwise, expect Smith to line-up next to left tackle as just another blocker to protect GG’s backside.
8. Recruiting indeed takes a hit, as the talent pool in Texas is off somewhat. Mack focuses on the OL and goes much more national.
How does 11-2 only get us an Alamo bowl bid?… We are such a big ratings draw that we’d likely be in a BCS game at 11-2.
I’d say Tre is a lot less brittle than Fozzy.
A ‘real’ running back coach will not fix our problems. It is the OL, so yes McWhorter has to go. Applewhite though would be an obvious and more natural fit at QB coach.
Yes. I’ll go one step furthur and say that Williams will be the name most talked about on both sides of the ball.
Was referring to the scenario that happened in ‘06 when we had 3 season losses and ended with a 10 – 3…I accidentally added a win in the Big-12 ’Ship. If we win the Big-12 Championship, then yes, of course, we get a BCS bid…it’s automatic.
Looks like Fozzy has shaken some of the injury bug. I’m not sure Tre is stout enough to be a workhorse. May be neither one is and Whaley becomes the man.
Agreed our OL is a problem…said so in #2. But I was referring to #7 and referring to possible issues recruiting the best backs in the state. I wonder how many we’re missing out on not having a RB coach with actual experience at the position. Are kids thinking “Is this the guy who can show and tell me all the techniques I need to be successful at the next level?”
Didn’t talk about defense, but I think the Achos, Aaron Williams, and Keenan Robinson will have great seasons. Also look for Jeffcoat to put on some bulk and be a solid contributor in the DE rotation.
Malcolm Williams?
You’re saying there are way to many drops with Kirkendoll, but that this is the year of MW? MW has far less reliable hands than Kirkendoll has.

10+ Wins Ok for Me - But not Mack
No way Mack retires on a 11-3 season with the 2010 recruiting class getting serious reps in the 2 deep.
I don’t think we lose to A&M at home or a TTech team that is going to be in a bit of a transition.
Playing AT and improving Nebraksa is going to be very dangerous.
Also, the other dangerous game is going to be UCLA. It will only be the 3rd game of the year and 3rd start for Gilbert (and his 4th game with meaningful snaps). They are pulling in very good recruiting classes (13, 14, 8 over the past 3 years with their new head coach). They have been improving very much on the field (more wins and making more games competitive). And, the kicker, it is the week before the RRS. That means that 1) even though we’ll be playing a big game, there will be some looking ahead to OU and 2) GD will still be holding all his ‘tricks’ in his bag. That usually leads to FAIL.
To sum it up, I see us with 2-3 losses next year too.
Where will the Big 12 title game be? I could see us losing AT Neb and then beating them in Houston (essentially a home game) or Kansas after the team gets some more experience.
So...
What teams give you the 2-3 losses? If it’s OU and Nebraska in the Big 12 then you most likely not be in the Big 12 championship game. If OU wins in Dallas and loses another Big 12 game somewhere else down the line they would own the tiebreaker. That or OU has to lose 3 in conference games but I don’t see that happening. OU moves out of the Nebraska rotation next year and would only meet them in the Big 12 championship game if they win the south and Nebraska wins the North.
The two teams I mentioned plus OU.
I’m not sure what I think about OU next year. I wan’t too impressed with their QB this year, but he was just a true freshman. I’m not sure they’ll have fixed their OL problems. I think they get a little worse on D. They are always a threat to beat us, but they have Mizzou, OSU, and A&M on the road. I wouldn’t be too surprised if they lost 2/3 of those.
Don't see OU losing to OSU
Next year. OSU is going to be doing a major rebuilding process next year but it’s always scary in Stillwater. I think the Texas A&M would be the one that could be a loss. I think Mizzou is very winnable. If OU beats Texas and Texas loses to Nebraska I think OU goes to the Big 12 championship.
I've been wondering about OC
Major at OC seems to be the way things would naturally go, but I seriously don’t think Major has shown any ability to coach running backs, and I have to wonder if we’d see the running game get any better under him. I like the guy a lot, but it just doesn’t look like it’s a slam-dunk hire.

Agreed
I find myself wanting to see him take over just ’cause I like the guy, but it is likely not the best we could do at OC.

I don't see Mack leaving right now
considering the current starter at QB is one of the best prospects he’s ever recruited at quarterback.

I think honestly, 11-3 might be selling us short
We worked through offensive ( line ) struggles throughout most of this last year, and it was a NC run.
I expect that our special teams and defense will not only be great, but outright dominant in the Big 12.
And while our offense will struggle at times, it’s not going to be anemic. I think 11-2 or 12-1 is more likely at the end of the regular season if GG and other key players stay healthy. 11-3 with a bowl loss, sure, but not with a bowl win.
I really don't see 11-3
I don’t think we miss a beat next season, I think the O-line will be better and the defense will be better as well.
I really think we compete for a national Title, for many years to come.
"The best decision I ever made was coming to Texas," James said. "The second-best decision was coming back."
If the O-Line play is better than last year, and GG stays healthy
I don’t see any problem with going 13-0
I think the O-line will be better
How many sooners were made fun of for saying the same thing int he same situation?
Texas o-line in 2010
Many of the guys who are going to start in 2010 have played a lot in the past. The ou line last year barely ever got to play b/c Stoops left the starters in to run up the score the year before.
I think two things:
1. The drop-off from our line last year to our line this year will not be as great as the Sooners experienced last year. Compare how many of our lost O-Linemen went to the NFL as opposed to the Sooners, as well as just sheer numbers. I think we’re losing 3 and they lost 4 or 5?
2. We’re not experiencing that loss along with severe loss at the reciever position. We lost Shipley, which stinks, but have a deep receiving core and good freshman class.
The huge talent drop off, with the loss of recievers left OU with no one to protect the QB and no one open for him to throw to. They had a bad situation.
12-1
I think Texas will be fine next year. The OL won’t be any worse than it was last year. The 1 loss will come against Nebrasko or ou.
ou lost A LOT of players on defense, and the ou offense wasn’t nothing to lose sleep over. The ou offensive line lost several starters again this year.
Nebraska will have a good defense, but not as good as last year. Suh was the heart of that team. The Nebraska offense is pathetic.
I think Texas can win every game next year, but its going to be difficult with some young players in key positions.
Our season will be set by the end of Nebraska
Mack Brown & Greg Davis will come through and more than compensate for a questionable O-line. I look for hardnosed running to set the stage and we set-up the pass with the run. No more EBS, but a legit TE threat and smashmouth blocking from our backs. This year should win Mack coach of the year in the Big XII.
We start a roll early and build momentum. The only QB better than Garret Gilbert is Garret Gilbert with confidence.
We win in a brawl over UCLA and the team finds it’s swagger as a strong physical unit which can score on any play from anywhere at any time either by land or by air. I look for this team to take steps from a finese type attack to a pounding assault with a howitzer firing away at will.
Stoops still hasn’t beaten Muschamp and our D wins the RRR. I will even predict at least a 14 point margin. Mike Davis shines.
We take another Nebraska heartbreaker leaving the Pelini’s to the tunnel talk, except this time ESPN has it miked up. Bo joins Ben Nelson on the pizza roll
I see us going 13-0. Another Big XII Championship.
The BCS will be BS and we end up in a BCS game too close to call. We will only get to the MNC if we demolish all comers. We must score big early in the year to get the votes coming our way. The SEC will own the media once again.
Colt vs GG
Colt didn’t have a great year last year. I feel pretty good that GG can do as good if not better than Colt did in 2009.
The WR will be better after getting the timing down in the off season with GG. Its going to be hard to replace Shipley, but GG needs to find is go to guy.
The RB’s will be about the same.
I would be happy if GG played as well as Colt did in 06.

+1
but Texas had a really good OL in 2006
Agree on Walters i just do not!!! like what i’m hearing about him. Mike Davis replaces Chiles after the Nebraska game. We need to go back to the offense that was in effect for Major and Simms when they were under the healm. Predictions we lose to Zero U, but its going to be really close and we have an open date after the Zero U game and Nebraska so that could help us. If we are still undefeated after the Nebraska game there is no!! way we should lose another game. Keep the 10 win season streak alive is important for this Dynasty!! I really hope Davis and White supplant Give up Chiles, for the 3rd spot. On another not if there is not a labor agreement in place i really don’t think Aaron Williams will leave early…just a thought
just a suggestion...
…to emphasize a word, CAPITALIZE the word instead of !!! so that you don’t confuse the rest of us with cut-off sentences. Would be much easier to agree/disagree with you. Hook ’em!
I think that people arent giving A&M or TTU enough credit
A&M will have the best offense they have had in recent memory in place and TTU will prolly be a night game at Jones. Regardless of how we have done in the past, we still have struggled vs. these two teams in the past (with the only blowout win coming vs A&M 2 years ago at home).
Im thinkin that at least one of these will be a nail-biter
"We'll be baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!"
a&m
sucks on the road and they lost their offensive coor.. The a&m defense might be worse than last year.
I think the TT game will be tough.
You figger Tuberville gives up some offense for more D?
I suspect that will be the case. Not as critical the coming season as much as 2011.
TT offense
he kept the offensive coor. didn’t he?
i don't think so...he hired dude from Troy w/ similar system..nt

Yup.
Neal Brown – does the prairie dog thing. Lots were hoping Lincoln Riley (receivers coach) would take over, but he went with Ruffin to ECU.
Agreed w/ whills – 2011 could prove to show vast improvement from the Tub.

2009 vs 2010
QB: The same. I think Colt had a bad year for his standards, and I think GG can do about the same if not better.
OL: The same. The o-line will run block better, but struggle at times pass blocking.
WR: The same. GG should allow Texas to stretch the field more, which should help guys like Davis, Williams, Monroe, and Goodwin.
D-Line: The same. Kindle and Houston are gone, but Texas should have more depth at the DT position in 2010 than they have had since Muschamp has been there. Mushamp has been able to reload every year when key players leave on the D-Line.
D secondary: A little worse. Earl Thomas will be hard to replace, but C. Scott should be able to do the task. C. Scott may be better against the run than Earl Thomas. The other DB’s will have another year under their belt as well.
LB: The same. Muckelroy is gone, but Texas has some young talent that looks good at the LB position.
Nebraska and aTm
I’m not sure we don’t have a little chip on our shoulder when playing Nebraska and A&M. Don’t forget, we “lost” to both of them last year, except for luck and officiating!!
41-38 !!
I've got my money on Mack heading out in 2012 or 2013
After GG leaves the program, hopefully with one or more titles under his belt. Mack said he wanted more titles, and I think he’s serious, and I think Muschamp is on the same page. Let’s win the championship at least one time together, then we transition…
11-1 regular season
with a loss at Nebraska, they’re due. To sour it for them we beat them in Houston and have a shot at the MNC in a rematch against Bama. GG is named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.
We beat TT in a cliffhanger in Lubbock on GG’s arm.
We beat OU by 10 as Muschamp’s defense solidifies and one of the true freshmen gains a starting job on defense (Tevin Jackson?). Turnovers are the key as AW picks of Landry Jones twice.
And we beat aggie at our house by blitzing Johnson out of his mind and running up the middle of their defense.
No way Mack retires and Boom takes himself out of consideration for the Florida job.

Greenspoints best thread yet
Nice discussion starter bro
Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.
2 really scary games
at Tech and at Neb are the two games that scare me the most. I will take a win at Tech and a close loss at Neb. for some odd reason OU doesn’t concern me as much
I don't know how to put this but I'm kinda a big deal.
OU D will be fine next year. Loses cannot be overcome
They lose Brian Jackson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gerald McCoy (which is big), Keenan Clayton, and Auston English. McCoy will hurt but JMAC has experience and we hopefully will get Adrian Taylor back after that bad break in the bowl game. Auston English was hurt much of his career and Frank Alexander has extensive playing experience in his place. Keenan Clayton and Ryan Reynolds both are in the linebacker core that is extremely deep and should not be a problem. Austin Box has a lot of experience at middle linebacker and Ronnell Lewis became a huge special teams star late in the 2009 year and even started the Sun Bowl I believe. Brian Jackson is not extremely special and his spot should be filled relatively easy. There will be some growing pains but it’s not like we’re OSU and replacing 9 or 11 starters. We lost 3 starters from 2008 to 2009 and became a much better defense. We’ll see what 2010 brings for the D but I don’t think it will be significant. Also Landry will be a redshirt Sophmore so this will be his 3rd year int he system and 2nd as a full time starter. He will be able to be efective running the offense. Running backs are still stacked. O-line is the only question I have for next year.
ou
will be worse next year tham this year, and they were pretty bead this year. The o-line and QB play is average. The D-Line is young and so are several spots in the secondary. Venables isn’t half the coach Muschamp is, so the defense won’t recover as well as Texas does.
We must be talking about different Defenses, Longhorns84.
Cause Adrian Taylor – Sr., Jeremy Beal – Sr., Frank Alexander – Jr., and Jamarkus McFarland – So. are not that “young”. The only youth I see is McFarland. You say QB play is average but considering the O-line problems I think he did well. Receivers were a huge problem and that hurt him as well. In the Sun Bowl he threw for over 400 yards and the receivers finally started to step up and catch the ball. They should be a strength going into next year. Running backs are stacked beyond belief so that’s not going to be an issue either. The only problem the 2010 Sooners could have is O-Line. If that gets straightened out I see no problem winning the South and possibly another Big 12 title. All areas of the field saw drastic inprovement but with all the injuries and movement of people around it’s hard to gauge if any progress was made. That is something that will be seen next year. How many on D do you lose this year? How many on O do you lose? Personally I don’t see with the experience gained this year the O couldn’t be better. That terrible Offense almost beat you this year.
