From #1 to 1 and done
Really? We were #1 - that is not this team and it never will be again. People need to wake and and realize this team is terrible. Honestly as I watched the game last night we have no guards who can do a damn thing. When Balbay has the ball he is no threat (other than to his own team). He will never score and cant pass. Maybe Brown can play - but he better play like the 2nd half the rest of the night. We sit at 5-4 in conferene and will be lucky to end at 8-8 (we will lose at Mizzou, at tech, at atm, and at baylor. That means we have to sweep at home. So we will be 22-8, and likely go 0-1 in our own tourney. So we will be 23-9 and get a #5/6 seed. We will promptly crap the bed and bow out in what will be the biggest nose-dive in history.

I am as frustrated as anyone by this team, but
Tell me where I am wrong??
Here:
this team is terrible.
Free Throw? Right On!
agree
I don’t know how some of these players got scholarships for b-ball. They can’t shoot.
Confidence
Is what we are lacking on this team. This is not the same team that shot out of a cannon at the beginning of the season. Damion James is the only one I see shooting with any confidence right now. Balbay needs to go to the basket. He is an excellent defender but is a liability on offense. This team is deep and talented. Coach Barnes needs to figure out a way to get the confidence back in some of the young players.
You paid for your own pom-poms didn't you?
It’s okay, you can admit it…back in December you heard we had a decent b-ball team. You weren’t sure, but with football riding high and Colt too innocent to have heard of “the stranger,” you figured life was good. What could possibly go wrong, right?
So you (and the rest of us, don’t worry, you’re not alone) went down to Cheer Station and got yourself some pom-poms. And not the cheap ones either. No sir, you splurged for the “In Yo Face” Specials cuz you were going to Bring…It….On! You may have even practiced spirit fingers a couple hundred times in front of your bathroom mirror while listening to Journey…I don’t know, wasn’t there.
But don’t feel bad, we all got Notre Damed…you mix a little pre-season hype from the pundits with a couple of wunder-froshman and add a 17 game winning streak to start the season including some wins over some big names that turn out to be suspect later, and there you have it – unmet unrealistic expectations.
And you would have thought PB would have warned us…I mean he goes to ND and all. I think he even converted to Catholicism so he could get an A in his Non-Profit Tax Tort Reform class. But don’t worry, he’ll get his comeuppance in the rectory later.
So back to this year…I don’t think your predictions above are too far off, though I will want an apology from you when we finish 10-6 in conference play and play for the title at the Big XII Tournament. The talent is there as Bill Self said in his post game comments last night and “(Texas) can turn it around overnight.” Easier said than done…
But the Texas team I watched last night never quit. If they had, I would be much more apt to agree with your assertions above. But I still believe they’re going to figure it out this season…maybe not soon enough to make a deep run in March, but soon enough that we get the pom-poms out of the trash can for another good shaking.
We’ll see…

Actually, I just took them from my 6 year old daughter after she got pissed off at our poor offensive showing at uconn. That being said, why does this team inexplicably look afraid to score. I mean I would have been happier last night if we just shot three’s everytime we came down. Does Balbay have an electrical shock cord on his sack which goes sends 200 volts if he shoots at the basket? We do have talent but appear afraid to unleash it – maybe it all goes back to confidence.
They're not afraid, they're indecisive
Not knowing exactly what to do and when to do it turns Michael Jordan into Michael Jackson on a basketball court.
First year players in college often say the biggest surprise is “the speed of the game.” Conversely, when a player comes into his own, he often says, “the game slowed down for me.” What they’re really saying is, “when I first got here, I didn’t know which way was up, but now that I do, I can go 100% all out.”
I think that explains why guys like AB, Hammy, and J’Brown are having trouble down the stretch…particularly, Hammy who has tasted some success but can’t quite figure out when he’s supposed to shoot. There were lots of examples last night where our guys either didn’t make the extra pass that would have given the ball to someone wide open or passed the ball to guy who was completely blanketed in the lane. But it’s coming.
As for Dogus, I think it’s just confidence with him. Somebody somewhere told him he can’t shoot the mid-range jumper and he is the Jason Kid of college b-ball. Problem is, Jason kid still shoots even though people tell him he can’t. Dogus seems resigned not to shoot it even when the defender is 15 feet off of him. He’s got to shoot it in my mind, otherwise, we really can’t afford to have him out there. J’Covan can shoot and drive so defenders have to play both making him much more dangerous.
My two cents.

Putting Balbay on the bench helped immensely
and I think Bobby Knight was correct in saying we’ll see more Brown at point. I love Balbay’s defense but he’s a buzz kill to the offense. His lack of confidence shooting is contagious and let KU pack it in down low in the first half. I’ve been complaining all along it’s 4 on 5 when he’s ‘playing offense’.

No question
Barnes has to regret taking Brown out of the starting lineup to begin with. Sure, we kept winning and were ranked #1 at one point. Was it worth it though? Probably not, considering it came at the expense of developing Brown, who’s going to be the focal point of the team not only this year, but in the future.
To add to that, Barnes changing his starting lineup to include both Mason and Balbay completely disrupted what was at one point our best, most efficient, and most dominant offensive force in Dexter Pittman. Now, we’re left with an inconsistent big man that struggles to play 20 minutes a game, and his NBA draft stock has tumbled into the 2nd round or even worse.
Look for a rejuvenated Pittman with Brown starting at the point with 3 other scorers around him. I would avoid pairing up Pittman and Balbay at all times if possible. With Dexter on the court, the first sub I’d make is Hamilton. Once Dexter goes to the bench for a breather, then I bring in Balbay to increase the tempo. With Dexy and his man not clogging the paint (Johnson would take his man away from the basket), the driving lanes are open for Doge to capitalize and draw fouls. A faster tempo gets Bradley, Hamilton, and the rest of the shooters an opportunity to take better shots with the opposing defense not being set.

Why doesn't Rick say to Dogus
“Shoot the damn ball!” Insist he take five shots per half — just put the damn thing up there. Maybe he’ll get a little confidence when one or two drops. Maybe the opposing defense will at least start to worry that he might be a threat to score. Throw it at the hoop, Dogus, just do it. What’s the worst that could happen — that hasn’t happened already?
It's possible that he just can't shoot.
Opponents are willing to sag on him because they know he won’t shoot the ball. What happens when he starts shooting the ball and opponents realize he only shoots like 15% (made up but just a guess) from the field? They’ll continue to sag. I don’t think he has any confidence in his jumper and there’s probably lots of evidence in his head that he just cannot shoot the ball.

Not the biggest nose dive...yet
This is not our biggest nose dive in history, but back when it did happen, it involved our key player having a season ending injury. And the result was that Abe got fired.
Offense or Defense?
Barnes wants players to play defense or sit on the bench. With talented players that usually works. Thinking the points will come with the talent we have on the floor. He is now trying to switch to think offensively. We have some great defensive guys but they can’t all shoot. If we put our offense on the floor we may put up points (assuming we create an offensive strategy) but the other guys will also score. Can we outscore other teams if our best shooters are on the floor? That remains to be seen.
