Around SBN: MLB Trade Deadline: Phils, Astros complete Roy Oswalt deal

Coming into the weekend of the second Junior Day, an offer and commitment from Angleton athlete Quandre Diggs, the younger brother of former Texas great and current San Diego Charger Quentin Jammer, never received his offer during the weekend, as the coaching staff told him they wanted to continue to evaluate prospects in the defensive backfield.

Turns out that evaluation didn't take particularly long, as Diggs committed to Texas about 24 hours after receiving his offer from Major Applewhite over the phone. The Longhorns offered Diggs as an athlete and he has the playmaking ability with the ball in his hands to warrant a look on that side of the ball, but he is on the record as saying that he wants to play defensive back in college and that is probably where he will end up as a Longhorn.

GOBR, why the change of heart from the Texas coaching staff?

2 schools of thought from my prospective. 1) Diggs had gotten so many offers from the big boys (nearly SEC and Big 12 school plus USC) that the Texas coaching staffing felt like they had to offer him just to keep top talent in state. Longhorn legacy, combined with “Texas good” talent , etc.. Or, 2) They feel like they will not get Walls and need Diggs to round out the safeties for the 2011 class.

What makes this committment all the more surprising is that Jerry Scarbrough did not list Diggs at all in his remaining likely committments for 2011 in the latest True Orange Report. I really like and trust Jerry. Great sources within the Texas program, really knows Texas high school football well (dude is a living legend along with Dave Campbell).

To poeple reading this post and curious on Scarbrough’s likely remain committments I will briefly surmise. Eventual committments from : Malcolm Brown, Cedric Reed and Matt Hagerty. A maybe on Westerman (believes UT will take 7 O – lineman if the next 2 are Hagerty and Westerman). Final UT schollies, some combination of : LB James Vaughters, CB Josh Turner ( a must get in my opinion) , DB Avery Walls, LB Anothy Wallace, S Laderius Brown, and S Jared Brackens.

Some questions to GOBR : What position will Diggs play in college in your opinion? Tall enough to play safety for Coach Boom, but we are woefully thin at corner back?

Gerry Hamilton twitted yesterday that Diggs was almost 5’10’’ , 180 pounds and looked like running back.

Finally, how does Diggs committment change Texas’ recruitment of Avery Walls and Josh Turner? I would think if the Texas coaches intend for Diggs to play safety we would close shop at the position, and thusly eliminate all the in state safeties and Walls.

I've seen a couple of Earl Thomas comparisons

which is why it’s great to get him in the fold. Earl came in at 5’10, 174 and just measured 5’10 1/2, 208 at the combine.

I think he goes in the defensive backfield somewhere, especially if Malcolm Brown comes aboard.

Just as long as he doesn't get bogged down in tweener status like Monroe, Hales, etc.

Monroe is a weapon

Loved his acceleration on jet sweep in MNC. Bama couldn’t stop him.

by realmccoy on Mar 11, 2010 10:13 AM CST up reply actions

He had one run of 28yds., and then two for a combined additional 5yds.

That one run was nice, but I wouldn’t characterize it as something Texas was able to do with any regularity on Bama.

He also had an 11 yard run on the first series that got us down to the 1

right after Colt got hurt. He had two nice runs on jet sweeps in the first half and then had one in the 2nd half that lost yards. He is definitely a weapon.

by 2Cor12:9 on Mar 11, 2010 11:59 AM CST up reply actions

A weapon, sure

But he gets lost in the shuffle a lot. It seems like he was only visible in about two games the entire season, although he was only suspended for about three. 143yds. as a freshman? Well, not terrible, but almost half were in one game vs. ULM.

Probably our most explosive offensive player

I think he scored a TD the first time he touched the ball in college on a kickoff. The disappointing part was on the coaches- 0 pass receptions last year-they couldn’t figure out how to use him. He’s listed as a WR, he needs pass receptions to get him more plays in space and not telegraph the jet sweep. I’d like to see him be a part of the offense, not just a Monroe series, motioning between being second RB and WR causing matchup problems for the LB’s and corners. Him and Goodwin could mess with some defenses.

monroe made it onto the field as a true freshman and returned kickoffs… hales was supposed to be electric at at least returning but hasn’t had a chance to star there, i have to think it’s more about hales than it is about tweenin.

Monroe played in 2008?

you’re right, RS freshman.

by Displaced Longhorn on Mar 11, 2010 10:49 AM CST up reply actions

Diggs stats per GH

He is a legit 5-9 1/2 and 193 per my visit to Angleton Tuesday afternoon.

by Displaced Longhorn on Mar 11, 2010 10:44 AM CST up reply actions

I'm guessing safety

is where QD he ends up. Four current safeties — Gideon, Brewster, Scott, Wells — will be seniors in 2011. Following that season, two years from now, the safety roster consists of Vaccaro and 1-2 from the just-signed 2010 class. That would be bolstered by 2011 commitments Sheroid Evans and, presumably, Diggs.

by edsp on Mar 11, 2010 10:17 AM CST reply actions

Why not CB?

Numbers are even more thin at CB than safety.

Does he not have the ability/hips to play CB?

by Horncasting on Mar 11, 2010 11:39 AM CST up reply actions

True about CB being thin as well

Assuming A.J. Williams goes pro a year from now, all that’s left at corner is Eryon Barnett, three incoming freshmen (White is already in school) and Scott (’11 commitment).

I’ve read Muschamp likes tall corners, but Adrian White and Leroy Scott are, like Diggs, 5-10. All three veteran corners are 6-0 or 6-1, Barnett goes 6-2.

by edsp on Mar 11, 2010 1:59 PM CST up reply actions

Losing Marcus Davis was a big-time punch in the balls.

I’ll hold out hope that Williams doesn’t declare a year from now.

Yep

Davis was gonna be REALLY good. AJ is all but signed. I’ve heard he’s blanketing people in spring practice.

One possible bright spot to potential 2011 NFL lockout

could be A. Williams deciding it is not worth it to leave early.

Great get and love the legacy

Welcome aboard to QD

I think (and hope) that we still get Josh Turner, Malcolm Brown, Hagerty and Westerman. Maybe 1 more CB and thats a wrap.

veery happy about this one kid obviously has talent if he has so many offers just wish he would have gotten offer at the junior day

does it matter now?

He committed.

Looks like a CB to me

Hope we don’t cap this class too small—seems like we have more potential high-level prospects than ever in this class and it would be a shame to have to say no just because of numbers. Hegarty, Westerman, Green, Brown, Turner, and one of Reed/Rasco and Vaughters/Wallace to wrap it up sounds good to me.

by GoHornsGo90 on Mar 11, 2010 12:41 PM CST reply actions

jabroni?

I am as happy as anyone about this commitment but to be insulted is quite an immature post I should say. all I was saying is I wish they would have given the kid an offer at the junior day that’s just wishful thinking im sorry I didn’t know that I wasn’t allowed to voice my opinion

by Hawk81584 on Mar 11, 2010 11:19 PM CST via mobile reply actions

I also wished the offer was earlier and wondered what happened in the last 2 weeks to make it happen

Obviously it is all good now-he got his offer, he committed, he is happy, we are happy, etc. But why do you think the coaches waited a couple weeks to make the offer?

It isn’t like he played any games to give them a better look or something else to evaluate. He certainly didn’t improve his grades in two weeks. The coaches have known him and his family for years…so what was it about the last few weeks that opened the spot?

I posted earlier about DT Marquis Anderson saying he wasn’t sure where he stood on his offer. It really sounded like he was getting some pressure to decide more quickly than he wanted to, so perhaps he or someone else’s offer expired which is why Diggs finally got his offer.

Jabroni? Serious question here is that like a bad slam word or is it more of a joke type word?

by Wrangler86 on Mar 12, 2010 1:17 AM CST reply actions

Does a later offer really matter?

Is Jeffcoat less of a Longorn, or less talented, because he committed almost a year after Wood and Hopkins and Bible?

Why the delay in offers? Who knows?

Kid had like 847 offers and may have been overwhelmed. Mack may have felt QD wasn’t clear on his future during junior day, and said he’d give him some time to get his mind cleared. Could have been an academic recheck. Maybe the staff still needed to talk to the family or the high school folks.

Here’s a few definitions here, but I remember The Rock using it wrestling

by vy til i die on Mar 12, 2010 10:57 AM CST up reply actions

I was seriously messing with the guy, but yeah a Jabroni is like a loser, lame ass, poser or asshole

but like I said I was just messin with the guy. Back to QD, who knows why they offered him late, maybe they were targeting someone else and they realized there was very little interest in that other recruit, so they went with QD instead knowing that he would commit on the spot. Just my opinion i’m certainly not the Ghost, that man knows his shit

by kcmorse on Mar 12, 2010 11:55 AM CST up reply actions

Thanks for teaching me new bad words LOL

Yeah, it is all a discussion in irrelevance now—but being a recruiting fanatic I would love to know the real inside stuff of how the offers are handled and the interaction. I know our coaches do a fantastic job and GBR does provide us better information than any of us deserve…I’m just super curious and nosey. QD never seemed to worried about it so he must have known it was coming.

Rivals interview with Diggs

http://texas.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1061951

I really love this guy already. He seems to have such a great attitude about just wanting to help the team in whatever position the coaches think he can be most valuable. He’s the kind of guy that makes it fun to cheer for on Saturdays—I really hope that he reaches his goals.

I am not thrilled about this

Not just because I am tired of football players giving the sport a bad name with the repeated criminal acts, but also because I also want to see UO beat USC—and without Masoli it will be even tougher. UO needs to figure out what is going on and get their kids back in line. The Temple RB is going to be the only man on the offense, but I’m pretty sure he will do something stupid during his career also.
