Open Thread: Conference Tournament Saturday
No, the Longhorns are not still alive; however, there is still lots of great basketball. Use this as your open thread.
ACC Semifinals (Greensboro, NC)
No. 1 Duke vs. No. 12 Miami 12:30 pm ESPN UPDATE: Duke advances 77-74.
No. 7 Georgia Tech vs. No. 11 NC State 2:30 pm ESPN
With who is left, Duke is the clear favorite and should secure a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament with an ACC tournament title.
Big 10 Semifinals (Indianapolis)
No. 1 Ohio State vs. No. 5 Illinois 12:40 pm CBS UPDATE: Ohio State takes advantage of horrible use of timeouts by Bruce Weber to advance, 88-81, in double OT.
No. 2 Purdue vs. No. 6 Minnesota 3 pm CBS
Two bubble teams, Illinois and Minnesota, are still alive. I think Illinois has done enough already but Minnesota probably needs another win to earn a berth.
SEC Semifinals (Nashville)
No.1E Kentucky vs. No. 3E Tennessee 12 pm ABC UPDATE: Kentucky rolls 74-45.
No. 2E Vanderbilt vs. No. 1W Mississippi State 2 pm ABC
Florida didn't help themselves yesterday but should still be in the field of 65. Another win by Miss State will greatly improve their chances. I have Miss State as the first team out right now.
Big 12 Finals (Kansas City)
No. 1 Kansas vs. No. 2 Kansas State 5 pm ESPN
Title means little for NCAA seeding, in my opinion. Kansas is a No. 1 seed win or lose and will be in the Houston or St. Louis Regionals. Kansas State is a No. 2 seed win or lose.
Big East Finals (New York City)
No. 5 Georgetown vs. No. 3 West Virginia 8 pm ESPN
Thankfully the Luke Harangody love fest is over. Bipolar Georgetown has been playing great basketball in NYC. If they play the same way in the NCAA tournament, a run to the Final Four is not out of the question. Or they could lose in the first round depending on which G'town team shows up. Everytime I watch West Virginia I imagine what Texas would have been like had Devin Ebanks come to Austin. Both teams are safely in the NCAA tournament--West Virginia is a solid No. 2 win or lose; Georgetown is in the 3-4 range.
Pac 10 Finals (Los Angeles)
No. 1 California vs. No. 3 Washington 5 pm CBS
I now have Washington in the tournament as one of the last four in. The Huskies can revmove all doubt by securing the automatic berth. Cal is now safely in as well.
Mountain West Finals (Las Vegas)
No. 4 San Diego State vs. No. 3 UNLV 6 pm Versus
No team may have helped themselves yesterday as much as San Diego State did. SDSU knocked off New Mexico and now projects safely in the NCAA tournament. The Mountain West will get four NCAA bids--these two plus BYU and New Mexico. Solid year.
Conference USA Finals (Tulsa)
No. 1 UTEP vs. No. 7 Houston 10:30 am CBS UPDATE: Houston wins 81-73. Tom Penders is back in the Dance. Unreal.
Tom Penders' club is playing for an unlikely NCAA berth. If UTEP wins, then Conference USA is a one-bid league, as Memphis and UAB killed their chances with early tournament losses this week.
Big West Finals (Anaheim)
No. 1 UC Santa Barbara vs. No. 3 Long Beach State 7 pm ESPN2
Winner is in, loser heads to the NIT.
Atlantic 10 Semifinals (Atlantic City)
No. 1 Temple vs. No. 5 Rhode Island 1 pm UPDATE: Temple wins 57-44, probably ends URI's at-large chances.
No. 2 Xavier vs. No. 3 Richmond 2:30 pm
I think these are your four NCAA tournament teams, with Rhode Island being one of the last four in. URI may need to win this game though depending on how Mississippi State, Utah State, and Houston fair.
WAC Finals (Reno)
No. 1 Utah State vs. No. 3 New Mexico State 9 pm ESPN2
The Utah State Aggies are probably in win or lose but Selection Sunday would be a lot less stressful if they take care of business tonight.

That's what CNNSI thinks...
I don’t know if they belong in the dance. They have played like doo doo for the past two months and aren’t anything even close to what they’ve been in the RB era. I guess it’s a hiccup year for RB, and I expect better out of the team next season.
HOOK 'EM!!!

Predictions
Little practice for my bracket(s):
ACC: Duke; Big 10: Minnesota; SEC: Tennessee (you know it); Big 12: Kansas; Big East: Georgetown; Pac-10: Everyone loses; Mt West: San Diego St; C-USA: Penders; Big West: UCSB; Atlantic 10: Xavier; WAC: New Mexico St (just to screw things up)
Wow, those are stupid. Love me some March.

1 Seeds
What if Duke loses and K-State wins? Could KSU snag their #1? Is ’Cuse def a lock?

Syracuse
is fine. Their entire body of work makes them a No. 1 seed.
Duke is a little different. If they lose in the semifinals today, I could see them getting passed by West Viriginia or Ohio State or K State, should any of those three win their tournaments. But if Duke wins today, and then loses in the finals, they are still probably a No. 1 seed.

pretty sure a 12 has never beaten a 1 in the ACC conf tourney

Houston 2 min
from snagging someone’s bid. Maybe Rhode Island or Washington or Illinois or Va Tech?
--AW--
Yikes
UTEP collapses with mulitple turnovers in final minutes.
Houston up 6 with 40 sec left. Look out bubble teams.
--AW--
And someone's bubble just burst
I had Rhode Island as the last team in before the Houston win. The Cougars are in and RIU is not out.
--AW--
Don't remember a bracket being this difficult
good luck tomorrow selection guys

So
a New Mex St win would burst another bubble?
by Infield Elephant on Mar 13, 2010 12:49 PM CST reply actions
Not so sure anymore
Utah State is a long shot if they lose. They will have to stand up on resume against Illinois, Washington, Va Tech, Wake Forest, Florida, etc.
It would be close.

So happy for the Coogs...

Last At-Large Bids
Here’s where I think we stand now. Nine teams for last five spots—
Last five in: San Diego State, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Illinois, and Washington
First four out: Rhode Island, Mississippi State, Minnesota, Seton Hall
Dead NCAA Dreams: Memphis, Mississippi, Arizona State, UAB, and Dayton.
--AW--
Miami stride not lasting long
56-42, Duke; under 12

Duke advances to another ACC tournament final
Gonna be tough for West Virginia or Ohio State or K State to jump Duke for fourth No. 1 seed. I don’t see it.

Illinois & Ohio State
Double OT; 75 all

Go Coogs
Penders magic
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.
Bruce Weber
is not a good basketball coach. Use of timeouts, or lack thereof, at the end of the second and OT was horrible.
--AW--
Yep
especially considering their not getting a shot off in reg.

Minnesota on top of Purdue
23-4 under 6; Purdue def not the same without Hummel. Lowest first half points for Purdue to date is 25 – about to beat that one.

Xavier misses. Spiders rebound. Xavier steals.
Bang-bang play. Xavier up 2 with 15.1 seconds remaining and ball.
Xavier misses. Spiders rebound, setup half court play and layup to tie with 3.1 seconds left.
Xavier with ball under their basket. Crossing fingers for OT. Earlier game in the year between the schools went 2 OT with Xavier squeaking out the win by a basket.
Spiders up 78-75 with 2:32 remaining in OT. Xavier hits one ft to cut it to 2 point game.
AND THE SPIDERS HIT A 3 TO GO UP 5!
Xavier steals inbound pass. Spiders foul. Xavier sinks only one ft and fouls off the second miss. Spiders to the line 83-80 lead.
...and unlike our beloved Horns, Spiders shoot lights out from the freethrow line down the stretch to pull off the upset
and win it in overtime 89-85. Bring on the Owls of Temple in the A-10 Tourney championship game tomorrow.
Here come the NCAA tourney Giant killers. Ain’t that right Charles Barkley?

That awful station that sometimes plays Longhorn games is showing Hoosiers. I think Barnes could take some pointers from Gene Hackman.
