OT: Need BONer advice for Austin road trip
Alright, denizens of Burnt Orange Nation. I come to you all humbly in search of some help.
A friend of mine and I are heading down south next week to make our first "of age" trip to ATX. We're going to be in town for no more than 48-72 hours max, so we're going to have to make it count. So, if you had to come up with a very short list of must-hit places in Austin (food/bar/other), what would be on it?
Of primary importance:
- What to hit on 6th Street
- The best Mexican food (I've eaten at Chuy's previously and I'm curious about El Arroyo)
- What to do when it's still light outside and students are in class

my advice as a recent student
6th: just go everywhere, i don’t know what kind of atmosphere you are your friend are looking for, but its easy to just amble around until you find someplace you like
Mexican Food: to me, Mexican food is all nearly the same with few exceptions, (tortilla, meat, cheese, and vegetables) however the Mexican martini is a different beast. on that front i recommend Trudy’s in north campus off of 30th, could also double as your day time activity. suggestion: upgrade the jimador tequila, 50cents, huge difference. Extreme suggestion: try the trudy’s challenge. Any one Trudy’s will only sell you two martini’s, get 2 at 3 different locations. (DD needed, drink responsibly.. blah blah blah)
Day time: Drink, (see above) another choice, Cain and Abels is at 24th and Rio Grande, west campus favorite, i’m assuming you’ll be near campus when you get there. if not the possibilites are endless
Well if you didn’t gather it from the above, i did alot of studying in my day. On the plus side, the better the drinks, the less you care about how good the food is
Mexican Food:
Torchy’s is a must try on 29th and guad…if your looking to kill time driving all the way to Matts RAnchero or Maria’s Taco express on south lamar… Maria’s is awesome
Kill all of 5 minutes driving 4 miles from downtown.

Mexican Food
Manuels on Congress and 4th. Order the pork-chile rellano and thank me later.
Stumpy: It's called the '80s. Ford was president, Nixon was in the White House, and FDR was running this country into the ground.
I still dream about that EXACT dish.
It may be the best plate in Austin. I also admire the various enchiladas at Polvos on South 1st.

It was the best thing I have ever ordered
in my entire life. Completely blown away.

UT Tower
is at the top of my list. I never get tired of that – as long as the weather is decent. But you have to make reservations in advance usually.
The Salt Lick in Driftwood, El Arroyo, the Taco Shack, and Pappasito’s on I-35 are some of my faves. I will second the recommendation for Manuels, Maria’s Taco, Torchy’s…..
If you’re into history at all, the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum is pretty interesting.
Sno Beach
is a great dessert after any meal! There is one on Barton Springs in a lot next to Sandy’s. If you eat at Matt’s, just take a short trip back down South Lamar and go right on Barton Springs. It should be within a few blocks.

next week
Next week is SXSW Music, Wednesday through Saturday. You won’t be able to wander around and bar-hop. Every bar becomes a venue.
Enchiladas y mas
For enchiladas, of course. On Anderson Lane off Burnet.

Sunday Brunch
Satellite Bistro off Slaughter and Escarpment Blvd. Great food.

Mexican Food
Juan in a Million’s for breakfast. You don’t even need a menu. Just get the Don Juan.

SXSW
All next week is SXSW. You can go out and find free liquor and shows all day long and there should be some good free shows at Auditorium shores too, byob. The night will be completely different. You will not be able to bar hop in the normal fashion. There will be about 100,000 people flooding the downtown area so you may want to avoid 6th street all toghether or just go down to look at the insanity. There are several good free parties in the early evening that you must RSVP for… Here are some good lists.

For Tex-Mex I like Juan In A Million on Cezar Chavez for breakfast, or Matt’s El Rancho on S Lamar for lunch/dinner.
Mexican
El Caribe on Lamar & 2222 is tiny, but amazing. The have the best carne guisada, great/huge milanesa, strong margaritas, and an excellent salsa bar. Family run with typically only one waitress working.
matt's el rancho
get the “bob armstrong” dip. amazing
