Is Dan Neill Rubbing Anyone Else the Wrong Way?

Loved the guy when he played at Texas but lately he has been pissing pissing my wife on the morning drive.  Yesterday morning he seemed to be saying that women as a gender were not very good athletes.  A few weeks ago he announced that the Olympics weren't for real sports fans, they were only for women.  My wife was a D-1 volleyball player, and she drives me to work in the morning and now she pretty much wont let me listen to 104.9 anymore, which kind of sux.  I know the guy is a pretty conservative dude, but someone needs to tell him to wake up to the modern world and put a lid on it.

Better yet . . .

. . . ask her to return your pelotas. Sounds like she’s the one wearin’ ‘em now. Man up & tell her who’s boss! (Don’t tell my wife I said that.)

Also,

if your wife won’t let you listen to your radio station then you need to fix a couple of things. First things first…

1- Go to the pawn shop and see if you can buy yourself a pair of testicles.

2- You drive the car. That shows her you are the man in the relationship.

BTW, how can Dan Neil be rubbing your wife the wrong way if she doesn’t let you listen to the station?

Well then, Dan Neil didn’t see the hot chick at the Y yesterday throw up 135 five times. She looked pretty awesome to me.

Dan Neil is a meat head

Theres not a whole lot going on upstairs and his attempts to sound intelligent or well-spoken make me cringe. He stumbles through every ad he’s asked to do, talks like his tongue is gigantic and too often settles for the cliche’ thing to say. I’ve heard too much “as you’re moving forward”, “defense wins championships”, “take it one day at a time”, among other annoyingly derivative statements. The other thing about him is he is an incessant backpedaler. At the first sign that his co-host disagrees with his opinion, he flip-flops.
ex:
Neil: “I think Michael vick should be punished harshly (paraphrasing)”
cohost: “well let’s not crucify the guy (paraphrasing)”
Neil: “No thats not what Im saying, I’m saying we should take a look at the whole situation before we pass judgement”
Me thinking: Thats not what what you just said….

Why not?

Is this some kind of macho insecurity thing? My wife drives as often as I do. I change the baby’s diaper as often as she does. It’s part of not living in the 50s, I think.

Misogyny and misandry are both kinda dumb, IMO.

My interpretation

Dan said women are not as good athletes as men. That’s not the same as women are not good athletes. Your wife (and everyone in general) needs to stop thinking everthing is a personal affront to her (them), her (thier) race, ethnicity, gender, age, nationality, sexual preference, or anything else.

by billb on Mar 16, 2010 10:00 AM CDT reply actions

exactly

who here seriously watches women’s sports when there’s a male equivalent on at the same time? would any of you watch our volleyball team the same day as a football game? or would anyone watch the women’s BB if Men’s BB was playing? no, no you wouldn’t and its nothing against women, its pure physiology they’re just not naturally as strong or fast thus less exciting to watch. I’m not advocating the destruction of women’s programs, but no amount of heart or will can completely overcome the fact that most women BB players can’t dunk. thats not to say men are superior, but when you compare the best at a sport in one gender to another its not really a contest.

p.s. love you volleyball team, you i will watch whenever i get the opportunity.

What about . . .

. . . figure skating? The gals are elegant and the guys are fruitcakes. Women’s beach volleyball vs. men’s beach volleyball? Misty May & Kerri Walsh? I’ll take the gals every time. Besides the bikinis, they’re just as skilled.

Also skiiing

Which is the better athlete? Lindsey Vonn or (pick a name) whiffing on a block in the football team’s OL? If Lindsey had the size she’d make a great left tackle. She’d be not so hot in shorts, though.

by SpiritOfTheFedora on Mar 16, 2010 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Huh?
If Lindsey had the size she’d make a great left tackle.

First, Dan Neil’s point was that Lindsey Vonn is not as good an athlete as the world-class-male skiers. Not that women couldn’t be athletic in their own right.

Second, at 6’1 285, Dan Neil was the best pulling guard in the history of Texas. At 6’1 285, Lindsey Vonn would barely be able to walk without having difficulty breathing.

by Eskimohorn on Mar 16, 2010 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't hear the context of Neil's comments

My point, without delving into the definition of ‘athlete’, was that Vonn is a better ‘athlete’ than say Adam Ulatoski or Charlie Tanner, pound for pound.

You also forgot to mention . . .

. . . that the gals play on a 7’6" net while the men play at 8’0". Aside from that, if Karch, Stoklos, Sinjin Smith were playing opposite of May & Walsh, they’d get a “net” call every time they went up because their tripod leg would be pointing towards home. Come’on dude, you gotta think of EVERY aspect.

Question: When were women finally allowed to run the marathon in the Olympics?

Memphis Bells—had to wear makeup, run in skirts and NOT SWEAT and reapply their make up at the end of the race. How absurd!!

I don’t live in Austin and don’t know Dan Neil, but sexist men suck!! Stick with your wife and find a new station with more brain power. I don’t blame her one bit!

Women can and do compete in every sport. Laila Ali would knock this fool out cold. Here are some other hot women that would beat him to a pulp. When you watch women compete in MMA and UFC fighting, it pretty shows you how stupid sexism is.

Please
Laila Ali would knock this fool out cold.

Dan Neil’s point is that Laila Ali would get knocked out by every professional male fighter in her weight class. And, probably most competitive amateur male fighters would destroy her.

I’m not a huge Dan Neil fan, but have listened to him enough to know that he’s not that controversial. I think the point he made in question was whether the Yates High School basketball team could take the UCONN Women’s team. He said yes – given how athletic these guys are (most, if not, all play above the rim). Erin Hogan, the other host, made a more succinct point that it would probably take a few halves for the UCONN women to adjust to the speed and the press, but that in a series they’d have a chance. No one pointed out that the women’s ball is smaller, making it easier to shoot and handle.

I’d say not a controversial discussion, but I guess the discussion itself could rub some women the wrong way.

yes, a couple of times. but no more so then any other opinionated sports radio host…it’s their job (at least on slow news days) to state their opinion.

one instance with neill that had me shaking my head was when he and his cohost were laughing at olympic snowboarders, insinuating that every single one of them was a pothead. given the ridiculously strict requirements of IOC testing (amongst other things, you need to declare in advance where you can be found, all 24 hours of the day, for a suprise test) and the the relatively lax requirements in the NFL, i couldn’t help but think about people in glass houses.

Why Can't People Accept that Fact That We're All Different

It’s a fact that men have more muscle mass than women generally. Because of that, male athletes are generally better (bigger, stronger, faster) than female athletes. This isn’t meant as a put down at all to women. There are some great female athletes out there that can whip a lot of athletic men, but we’re talking about this on a general level.

Pointing out how we’re all different doesn’t make one sexist or racist or in any way bigoted. It’s just pointing out facts. No reason to have hurt feelings over it.

Thank you

I have no idea why some women and overly politically-correct men are obsessed with insisting that the emperor wears a fine cloak of gender equality in sports. Bobby Riggs was 55 when he played Billie Jean King, that match was a farce. Women’s tennis is vastly more entertaining, but matches between the genders wouldn’t be close (the men’s serves are too fast – which is why the women are a better watch). Anyone who honestly considers men’s and then women’s BB won’t take issue with basic physical differences between the genders. But it’s got nothing to do with broader equality, obviously. Men can’t bear children, and that’s vastly more significant than an ability to play games. Heck, I can beat my boss at any sport, but he’s still better at our job than I am. Anyway, people who get angry about this fact of life have deep-seated insecurities, it seems.

by Zona on Mar 18, 2010 1:52 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think that was the problem with Neill

I think it was more that he (allegedly) said that the Olympics were just for women, and that women aren’t great athletes. Both are obviously false.

No one except the most deluded idealist would believe that, say, the middle-50% of women matches up at all favorably with the middle-50% of men in terms of athletic performance. By the same token, the middle-50% of some races perform at lower intellectual or athletic levels than the middle-50% of some other races. But that doesn’t mean that a gender or race can’t be very athletic or intellectual on the whole.

And regarding the watching of Olympics, well, it’s not just for women. It’s for many people, and just because we choose to watch the Olympics instead of the NBA or the latest pretentious TV crime/medical/legal/island drama doesn’t make one a woman. And saying that it is just for women is degrading women, the Olympics, and those who watch the Olympics.

by burntorangehorn on Mar 18, 2010 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Two very different things

The difference between the sexes and the difference between races are very different things.

With the sexes there are physiological differences that explain the difference (testosterone levels).

With races, there has never been any identifiable genetic differences that make one race on the whole more athletic or intelligent than another (I am not sure if this is what you meant). This is not to say that we should just be blind of the differences, but just to realize that it is not predestined in our genes to be this way. Environment, nutritional and cultural differences are what cause this difference.
