Sam Acho
Here's a link to a Fort Worth Star Telegram article about spring practice. In it, Mack says that Acho and Randall would be the starting tackles right now, with Eddie Jones and Okafor at ends. Had anyone else heard about spinning Acho down to tackle? To me, he doesn't seem like he has the build to make this jump in one off-season, plus with his production i just can't see possibly foregoing 10 plus sacks.
Thoughts? We've been extremely successful moving players closer and closer to the center as their careers progress, but most of the ones i can think of didn't excell at their previous position as much as Sam did this last year.

acho to dt
1. This is being used as motivation for the howell’s and johnsons
2. acho would only have to add about 20 pds because their are no really power running teams in the big 12.
He played a little bit at tackle last year
I think the idea is to get the four most experienced linemen on the field. If it sticks it will be a great sacrifice by Acho, his NFL future is more likely at DE.

Don't ever question the CHAMP!

I think it sucks.
How are the young DT’s going to get any better if Acho is taking all the reps in practice? WTF?
I have no problems with Okafor and Jones as starting ends.
Which is the real question here I think.
Id also have no problem with Acho + Okafor/Jones at end.
If Acho can cut it at tackle, and that gets more of our best players on the field at once, I’m all for it. Hell Rivals has him at 6’-3" 258 lbs as of September 2009, Houston only had 20 lbs on him. I dont doubt he could make the weight necessary.
I’m guessing the coaches are also expecting Jeffcoat/Wilson to be able to contribute as freshman as Okafor did last year. Thats easier to do at end than tackle, and makes it more attractive to have an end spin down if capable.

Jones & Okafor
are better. At least that is what I take from the move. As other’s mentioned we should have some freshman to provide depth at end. We don’t have much at tackle. I like Acho but they must feel he can be more effective on the inside. I think he cause all kind’s of havoc. Now we need to develop more traditional tackles behind him. We don’t want a repeat of the BCS game where we have stretches of getting abused against a physical team like Alabama. Still you have to worry about the Big 12 first. Being able to rush the passer is a must in this league. I think we will have the potential to be as good as anyone in the country at that.

I really don't think Jones and Okafor are better than SAcho
I actually think SAcho is probably UT’s best returning defensive player, although AW might have an argument.

Agreed, but Acho + 1 young DT in the interior with Jones and Okafor bookending likely is a better scenario than Acho + Jones/Okafor with 2 young DT in the interior.
Then again, it may just be for depth at DT and making Acho a more versatile tool.

Acho is also pretty crafty at working inside.
He always seems to sniff out the ball, which is a good quality that could prove even more valuable the closer he gets to the snap.

Although Muschamp certainly has starters...
He cycled players in and out a lot last season. You don’t tend to notice as often since the announcers have a tough time keeping up with who’s on and off the field for 22 players, but I wouldn’t worry too much about this, as Will definitely will keep the rotation fresh and get meaningful snaps for the green guys when it’s appropriate.
Acho at Tackle
A large part of Orakpo’s success in 2008 was Roy Miller. I think it’s fair to say that without Miller clogging up guards inside Orakpo wouldn’t have been free enough on the outside to warrant winning the Lombardi, Nagurski, and Hendricks awards. Miller was dominant enough on his own to shut down tOSU’s inside running game in the Fiesta Bowl, and get the Def. MVP trophy.
Kindle was a statistical disappointment because he didn’t have the same assistance from inside. He was fighting his tackle and a guard a lot of the time.
We have an abundance of good ends between Okafor, Jones, Acho, and Jeffcoat. It’s logical to move the largest of the group inside to tackle. In the pass-happy Big-12 it makes sense to favor lighter, faster tackles who are better suited for rushing passers and splitting up screens (a weakness last year) then stopping interior runs.
"Speak softly and carry a big stick."
Disagree
I don’t believe you can blame Kindle’s stats on our inside. I thought that Houston was excellent. In fact, I found him nearly, if not equally, as effective as Miller, and thought he was fantastic in splitting up screens. Keep in mind, that on the opposite side of Orakpo in ‘08 was Kindle.
I think Acho and the other ends benefited from teams avoiding Kindle this past year and Kindle getting double teamed, some times from the tight end or running back. This left the opposite side with so many opportunities. On the flip side, I think a portion of Kindle’s stats are due to Kindle himself, i.e., I don’t believe he was as dominant as Orakpo. Orakpo faced many double teams and still found a way to increase those stats.
Either way, I am grateful that both have donned burnt orange and I can’t wait to see who steps up as the dominant force the next several years.
Agree
Orakpo was a manbeast, NFL rookie of the year caliber.
The exciting part about the next few years is that there could be somebody at every position in the DL that deserves a double team. Can’t wait to see the Wilson, Dorsey, Bible, Jeffcoat combo or something similar in three or four years. And the LB’s will make them even better. The LOS will be a dangerous place to attack.

Disagree.
Houston was as good if not better than Miller.

DT
Other than Kheeston Randall, we have:
Higgins
Howell
Johnson
Kriegel
Humphrey
Wilcoxon
We did get pretty thin at DT. If Acho can slide over successfully, and we can keep him on the line at the same time as Randall, Jones, Okafor, and the Freshmen…. it would be worth it.
didn’t we lose some of these guys for some odd reasons that I can’t remember?

Humphrey I believe had a medical condition that never allowed him a single game (sad).
I think a renal condition that was pretty serious. I don’t recall an official team announcement tho.
