Reasons Wake Wins

1. Isi turns the corner against the slower footed Mason, draws fouls on the Texas bigs, and forces Lucas into action.
2. Aminu frustrates Dexter with his strength and quickness on defense and gets DaMo and/or Gary into foul trouble on offense.
3. Fast break points.
4. Texas is a mismatched jumble of parts that hasn’t remotely resembled a team in weeks. Damion will bring it—that’s for sure. Beyond that, we don’t know. Does Bradley play aggressively and take the ball to the rim? Does Hamilton play smart or revert to me-first basketball? Do we get anything out of Mason on offense? Will Rick trust Wangmene or Chappy or Hill for a few minutes here or there? Heck, we don’t even know if our coach will let our point guard play tonight. If the mind games with J’Covan and Hamilton continue, we’re doomed, regardless of how disfunctional and inconsistent Wake may be.
5. Save Damion, our best offensive players are our worst defensive players and vise versa.

yup, we have a lot of good role players

but they’re all one-dimensional, and you can only play 5 of them on the court at the same time.

Reason Texas Wins

1. Damion James—DaMo continues to be a mismatch at the college level. Aminu is taller and may have more NBA upside, but Damion is a better college player.
2. Hamilton plays team basketball. Over the last few weeks, Jordan’s game has taken huge steps forward. If Rick lets him play, I expect Jordan to have a huge game.
3. By now, J’Covan has to have figured out what Rick wants and needs. Brown makes the necessary, not the spectacular pass, attacks the ball, and attemps to move his feet on defense.
4. Dexter plays like a man. This is a make some money game for Sexy Dex. If he plays strong and doesn’t back down, he has a chance to regain tons of lost pro money. Sadly Dexter rarely dominates elite competition, but maybe tonight.
5. The defense returns. Presumably, Texas got yelled at all week long about their recent defensive efforts or lack thereof. Wake is not a great offensive team, and if Texas plays good team defense, they should have no trouble cutting off driving lanes and protecting the defensive glass. If they do those two things, Wake won’t be able to shoot their way to victory.
6. Seniors. Damion, Dexter, and Mason will the ’Horns to at least one more victory.

--AW--

by awiggo on Mar 18, 2010 8:05 PM CDT reply actions

Dexter and $$$

he can really regain most of what he’s lost if he can hold his own against Cousins.

While I'm still not a fan of it

all these upsets and close upsets gave the NCAA a reason to add more teams to the tournament.

by goingforthecorner on Mar 18, 2010 8:31 PM CDT reply actions

actually I'd say the opposite

Adding more just makes it into a lottery where the best teams will lose upsets and the national championship becomes little more than the main event in the World Series of Poker. There are almost too many teams already in my eyes.

Read an interesting point on Barking Carnival

the assistant coaches we’ve lost recently have affected us big time. I’m guessing they did the X’s and O’s, while Barnes was more like a manager and recruiter. Now our assistants are young and inexperienced.

Sure seems that way based on how our offense looks.

by JohnsonUT on Mar 18, 2010 11:33 PM CDT reply actions

Interesting to see what happens next year

- Does Barnes hire an experienced assistant to manage game prep and game strategy?
- Does this waste of talent effect recruiting?
- Who plays the point next year? I assume J’Covan
- The basketball novelty of Pittman is gone and this should improve the team

by IUTex on Mar 18, 2010 11:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Damion James is a great Longhorn

I am personally furious that RIck Barnes didn’t dial up an inbounds play to get J’Covan the ball to shoot the last free throws. As soon as Gary got fouled, I knew it was over.

I really hope Brown matures.

Emotionally and as a leader on the court.

He showed a lot of heart today

I was very pleased with his performance.

by the1austin on Mar 18, 2010 11:38 PM CDT up reply actions

i was somewhat pleased

I was also sickened at the end. he was laughing after he gave up the offensive foul, missed two big FTs, etc.

by MJY6087 on Mar 18, 2010 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Probably the biggest shock to me was him missing those two free throws.

I wanna say we were up 6 at the time? Extending it to 8 and buying us another possession would’ve been huge.

AB had multiple clutch defensive plays tonight. JH kept Texas in the game during the first half. JCB was great in the second half.

that part is not unbelievable...

the part where brown passes the ball in the back court when he knows he needs the ball in his hands was very unfortunate

Since Rick Barnes is a douchebag of a coach, who doesn’t know how to win big games.. Your fate was sealed. I just feel sorry for these guys. Honestly.. If they just had a BETTER COACH.. Wishful thinking??!!

by UTUTUT on Mar 19, 2010 12:11 AM CDT up reply actions

is that ANOTHER gay joke?

..man you need some therapy. I am NOT a fan of everything Rick Barnes does, but I’m also not a troll telling other teams how to play ball. Barnes gets the talent here, but everyone knows he’s not the best strategist. I’m sure a lot will change if he ever gets a championship (on his own merit or riding the back of a superstar). All that matters is that he keeps on winning. Am I pissed that we (Longhorns) lost? Sure. Am I ready to put Barnes’ head on the chopping block. Not yet.

So many mistakes, hard to list them all

Just in overtime, all the unnecessary fouling, missed FTs by Johnson and Brown, Brown getting called for the offensive foul late, etc.

These kind of mistakes should have been made earlier in the season, but instead Barnes kept Brown on the bench.

You’re probably not going to find another coaching staff that could do a worse job with this talent than Texas.

Another sorry performance by Pittman

We got outrebounded by 25. I thought Pittman had fouled out, but he was just watching from the bench down the stretch. Kiss the NBA goodbye, Dex.

My last Bball post for the year

Can you say dumb basketball? Why shoot 3’s when you are up by 8? Why try and get fancy dribbling the ball in the open court and get a charge. How many freaking dunks did Woods have off missed shots? WTF? Texas game WF that game….Do we start Fire Rick Barnes? Do we go there? Just bad, bad decisions….and what finally killed us? The simple FT.

by Dawnpatrol on Mar 18, 2010 11:46 PM CDT reply actions

Glad its over

Would have loved to see more 2-3 zone this year and tonight. when you have offensive players that suck at D you go to a zone. Rick never fully got this. I do not believe Rick Barnes is the coach of the future for the Longhorns. I tip my cap to him for building the bridge to greatness but I have no faith he can take the final step.
