Longhorns Eliminated in Overtime
Don't know what to say. No. 8 seed Texas is knocked out of the NCAA tournament in the first round by No. 9 seed Wake Forest. The Longhorns miss an opportunity to clinch the win in regulation and then blow an eight point lead in overtime. Wake gets a last second jumper from Ishmael Smith to defeat Texas, 81-80.
Wake moves on to take on No. 1 seed Kentucky on Saturday. Texas is done--way too soon.
Seniors Dexter Pittman, Damion James, and Justin Mason have each played their final game in burnt orange and white.
Use this as your disappointment thread.

Thanks Seniors
It was a tough run, but at some point in your careers we all thought you were the greatest addition to Texas Basketball. Some more than others, but you were Longhorns nonetheless, which makes you winners in life, not just on the court. Here’s to this class of Seniors…may better days lie ahead!

no surprise
well that sucked, but it was no surprise. FT shooting has killed us all year and i knew it was gonna happen in the tourney. it was nice the team was #1 if only for a few days, but something needs to be done next year about this horrendous FT shooting.

Sorry that their Senior season ending this way
But im glad the Texas Longhorn basketball season is over. It was torture watching them. But at least DaMo has a future in the league. I like Mason, but not happening…and the other fella….im not wasting text space.
Throw Ya Horns, Mayne
damion james, sadly, wont make it more than 2 or 3 years in the league
hes not big enough to be a PF and isnt fast enough to be a guard. also, he cant handle the ball to save his life. i love the guy, but just dont see him translating at all to the NBA. no wonder he stayed this last year. sure, he will get picked up in the draft, but if he makes it more than 2 years, ill eat my hat. reminds me of pj tucker

Thank you seniors
Underclassmen, let the pain from tonight motivate you to improve your basketball skills. Lord knows we have no perfect players on this team.
Barnes, take a look a mirror and decide if this is for you. You did not seem to have the drive of a champion this year. I am not convinced you are the right leader for us. Prove me wrong.
its not all just on barnes, the players really crapped it up bigtime
brown was laughing after he missed those 2 FT attempts. chapman was playing around on the sideline.
we left the door open when we went up by 8 and couldnt hold onto a lead to save our lives. yea, barnes deserves the blame, but none of these players even played with heart this game until 4 min left.
we looked like a pickup team u would see at hemphill park… only worse

JCB was probably embarrassed about the FTs
You see the smile on players’ faces after they screw up when they know they shouldn’t have. It’s pretty natural, trying to save face. Would you prefer if he had grimaced and hung his head?
season epitomized
Bad decisions (e.g., Brown giving up the ball when he otherwise would have been fouled in the final minute), missed free throws (the fatal last two shots), and poor coaching (Hamilton carried us in the first half but sits for key stetches in the second) killed Texas in the second half of the season just as it did tonight.
Although I am frustrated that we managed a combined one win in the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments, of course I wish our seniors well in their future activities.
Brown HAD to give up the ball..
..double teamed, and they weren’t gonna foul him. It would’ve been a violation. Throw that on coaching too.

from the espn recap . . .
“I was watching the 10-second clock because [Brown] should have kept the ball. We wanted him to keep the ball,” Barnes said. "I told him that. What he should have done is dribbled it, and see if they would have — because they would have fouled him, because they were yelling for the foul.
I agree with everyone else
I’m just glad the torture is over. Looking forward to next year.

Where do the Texas fans stand?
I’m a KSU fan, and I can’t help but think Frank Martin would be CRUSHING people if he had Texas’ talent. Where do you guys stand on Rick Barnes? I really think he might be one of the worst X’s and O’s coaches in the nation….but somehow 5* recruits want to play for this guy. I don’t get it.
i said the same thing
to one of my friends whose a ku fan, and he agreed completely
It's a ton of things
Facilities, Austin, young player friendly offensive scheme (ie we don’t have a scheme so you can come in and start as a Freshmen…no problem), coach lets players go to the league as soon as they get a decent draft grade, decent coaching staff…
frank martin
would make the big twelve his bitch with our team. I love his intensity and we would be cutting the nets in 4 years with him
Not convinced he does everything by the book
nor do i think he is a stand up person. I am judging this on hearsay, but I don’t want a Frank Martin type leading my program.
I thought the same thing at first.
But I’ve come around. An he is getting better with his temper all the time. I’d compare him more to Bo Pelini with his temper than a thug like Bob Huggins.
why not
the problem is that rick is soft and when he tries to be authoritative i bet the players tune him out. I would be certain that when frank martin speaks, his team listens and listens well.
yeah..
..or else he’ll hit him. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Martin get fired ala Leach, Mangino, and Leavitt.

Fun fact about Frank Martin
His car was towed during the KSU-Texas game by KSU parking services. Oops.
Im glad its over
i love longhorn sports and basketball as a close second behind football, but this trainwreck needed to end. I liken watching ut basketball during the second half of the season to that of a drug addict and its relationship with the drug. We have to have it and when its there we love it but then the reality sets in and the come down is horrible. We’re miserable the whole time we dont have it and complain about its affects, but then when it comes again we forget how bad it really is and love the moment again. I feel a sense of relief as i know that the long agony is over and look to august and next year. Damion is the man and one of my favorites all time but i will erase this one from memory. hello two a days
I'm not that mad at DaMo for missing that last free throw
I mean, that guy has played like a warrior all season and has been by far our most consistent player. I’m more upset at Pittman for pulling another disappearing act, for missing a gimme layup, and not helping us keep up on the boards. How can we lose by TWENTY on rebounds? Oy. At least his block on the dunk was pretty cool.
We clearly outplayed Wake the latter part of the game, but we built yet another hole early in the second half because we refused to rebound, rotate on D, or get back on transition defense. Or stop dribble penetration… you know, play defense period.
I was thrilled with some of the things I saw from the freshmen today, but then again, it’s the last game, not November, so rather than hoping for better things in the near future, we have to wait for another season.
In many ways, all the issues of the season manifested in this game. I don’t need to bother to list them all.

Hmm
I wasn’t really talking about the Houston area teams, but thats cool, I guess. I’m talking about your complete “Chicken Little” attitude that you’ve developed lately over our basketball team. I shouldn’t say developed, because its certainly not new with you, but now its gone as far as you attacking these kids personally.
Who are you to talk down on these student athletes? You know NOTHING about what they do and how hard they’ve worked to become players on a very competitive Div. 1 University like Texas. You know nothing of their background, yet you continue to belittle them. Being an upset fan is one thing, trust me I know (I’m a Houston Sports fan as well). However, I’ve never stooped to the level that you have before. Its embarrassing and sad to see it coming from a Texas fan.
I’m not happy with how Texas has played down the stretch, but it is what it is. I’m not going to call for their heads on a platter. I’m going to pick my team up, dust them off, and get ready for Omaha. Why? Because WE’RE TEXAS! its who we are.

Agree with this.
Especially for Hamilton. He needs some work all around to become more consistent. Bradley can be a flat out beast and a top pick in the draft with a couple more years. I mean, he could very well be a first round pick this year, but I feel that a couple extra years would be crucial to his development towards the next level.
by ElMariachiLoco on Mar 19, 2010 8:47 AM CDT up reply actions
I would change...
Play Thompson at Center:
PG, upgrade via maturity and no Mason
SG, upgrade via experience
SF, big upgrade no Mason
PF, downgrade
Center, upgrade no big fat slow donut man
True
But I don’t think he cracks our starting line-up over Brown or Balbay. Would LOVE to be wrong on that though, cause that means he is pretty amazing.
"A lot of people look for the easy way to do anything, in swimming there is no easy way." - Eddie Reese
Considering he was doing well there in the start of the season,
It should in theory be down to Brown and Ward with Balbay getting minutes somewhere else if possible because you know Barnes likes Balbay’s defense.
TEXAS FIGHT
so
wangmene hill and chapman will see significant minutes next year. That can only lead to success right?
Isn't it great?
"A lot of people look for the easy way to do anything, in swimming there is no easy way." - Eddie Reese
Once in a blue moon
Chappy does something productive I suppose….a starter? maybe for Colorado or ISU
lol
but the funny thing is, he would probably go off on us for like 20 and 10
can we get him to transfer
i would pay to see that, just for the comedic irony of chapman putting on a one man show against us. seriously, who wouldnt pay to see that
has anyone really thought about what next year will hold
i mean if they are on the floor that is absolutely no offense and liabilities on defense, i dont know what to think
I don't really think they will start
any of those guys. I think Johnson will. And it could work too, but we would have a different identity.
"A lot of people look for the easy way to do anything, in swimming there is no easy way." - Eddie Reese
Agreed
So is this what our line-up really looks like?
PG – Brown/Ward
SG – Bradley
SF – Hamilton (6’7")
PF – Thompson (6’9")
PF – Johnson (6’6")
"A lot of people look for the easy way to do anything, in swimming there is no easy way." - Eddie Reese
damn
we better run people out of the gym or well get dominated on the boards
Perhaps
It involves a lot of hustle and heart. The Rockets play Hayes (6’6) at Center but not only do they not get outrebounded, but they are third in league in offensive rebounding.
Size doesn't hurt though
But I get what you are saying. J Ham is not a good rebounder/big defender, and Thompson is an unknown. GJ can play big, but he can’t do it all is what I think is the point.
"A lot of people look for the easy way to do anything, in swimming there is no easy way." - Eddie Reese
Oh fully agree
I don’t think anyone chooses to play as small as that lineup (except for small spurts) but it’s the best 5 we have.
Unlike the pros there is less height in NCAA ball too. At least I feel like that’s true haha
I'm still excited about next year
Brown, Bradley, and Hamilton would get increases in minutes and opportunities as sophomore next year. Because of that, I think they would all have incentive to return to increase their stock.
Eventually, I’ll be ready to move on from this disaster of a season. Pittman just didn’t mix well with this team. He plays at one wavelength, while everyone else plays at another level. Sad to say, but I think we’re better without him, and I firmly believe next year we’ll see a better team than this year, even with James and Dexter leaving. Having three seniors here basically prevented the freshmen from experiencing a true trial by fire, as the conservative Barnes for example would rather go with with the reliable glue guy in Mason than taking a chance with Brown. I’m willing to say this in hindsight – James and Pittman coming back may have actually hurt this team, as it played a role in the lack of development of our freshmen.
Next year will be a much more balanced team that can all play at the same style. If our starting lineup is Brown, Bradley, Hamilton, Johnson, and Thompson, you will not be seeing complaints from me. The bench is hopefully Ward, Joseph, Lucas, Williams, and Wangmene/Chapman. I see it being significantly better offensively than this year’s team. While on paper we would struggle on defense, a good offense that doesn’t turn the ball over and take bad shots helps your D.
As a fan, I learned a lot this year. While I won’t be turning into someone like greenspointexas anytime soon, I’ll probably be paying more attention for any signs of weaknesses much earlier, instead of simply shrugging off close wins to Rice and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi like I did this season. I guess jaded would be a good word to describe how I feel about the program at this point.
Barnes should not be fired, but I feel like he really needs to come up with something special to make up for this year’s colossal disappointment. I feel bad for him personally because I think the entire nation at this point considers him as a clueless basketball coach when it comes to X’s and O’s, he can bring in talent but can’t develop them, he does less with more, etc. and so on. I believe adding an experienced assistant coach or two to help Barnes with game-planning and player development would work wonders for the program.

i think that pittman coming back may have hurt the team but i wholeheartedly disagree about james
senior leadership, teaching the freshmen. mason coming back hurt us. if pittman played pg/sg/sf where he took minutes from the freshmen then i would agree. as long as everyone returns for next year(the freshmen) then im pumped for next year.

I wonder
If Barnes is of the stubborn variety and won’t higher quality assistants.
Also you think Balbay is gone too huh? I’m curious to see, he seems like the loyal type.
Hope we land Joseph as well, which actually may push Balbay out. I actually think with Balbay tonight we shut down that Ishamel kid and win. How ironic people wanted him gone early in the year, and him not being here may have cost us tonight.
Balbay
PB’s Man-crush. He grew on me. He learned a lot of control from last year to this year. And his defense improved a ton. But honestly he hurt us on the offensive side because James, Pitt, Johnson could not get points down low because an extra defender lagged off Dogus. If he had a jumper……
Thats what would be great….. Dogus takes the summer and gets a jump shot. I swear we could win the National Championship next year.

Lovin the optimism!
Hell yeah! National Champs 2011! Bradley POY! Balbay Def. POY!

While I agree his lack of a jumper hurt us offensively
I didn’t see much improvement when he left.
Man if he gets a solid 15 footer he could be a lottery pick!
I just don't know about Barnes
Part of me is frustrated that we have had the kids we have had and we have so little hardware to show for it.
The other part of me remembers UT B-Ball before Barnes. I don’t have the energy to look it up, but tally our Tourney trips, Sweet 16’s, Elite 8’s, Final 4’s in the 20 years before Barnes and then compare to his time here.
I think his sucess earns him some benefit of the doubt.

Keep this in mind folks
No matter how bad this basketball season hurts, take solace in the fact that at least our football and basketball teams fared better than OU’s. It still feels good to be a Longhorn.

That is a good note to sleep on

I am depressed
I know this was far from the best Texas team ever, but I fell in love with this team. I always do, I think I am a bigger basketball fan then I am a football fan for sure.
Disappointing tonight, looking forward to next season…
