Basketball Asssitant Coaches

While this year was certainly disappointing, and Barnes' coaching of this team lacked considerably, I think he has done far to much for this program to be fired this offseason. I think he can be the coach to lead us to the promise land, but he needs to show next year that he is still leading Texas in that direction.

Instead of firing Barnes, I think we should look at bringing in some new assistant coaches. I don't want to get rid of all of our current staff, but brining in some new ideas (meaning probably not another former player of Barnes) could be very helpful (similar to what Robinson and McDuff, Chizik and then Muschamp did for the Mack and the football team).

But I don't know who the top assistants out there are. Unlike in football, where some coordinators are known just as well as their head coach, basketball staffs are all about the head man. So, I ask, who are the top assistants we could bring in to improve our basketball staff, and our basketball team?

Thanks, and Hook'em!

We have the money

we can pry away assistant coaches from other big name basketball schools. Only question now is if Dodds and Barnes are on board with this.

Dodds

I’m sure he’s on top of it. Just a matter of waiting out the NCAAs and seeing who he can shake loose. Assistants play a lot of different roles. We need a bench coach to manage substitutions and defenses. If we can bring in an offensive guru, so much the better. I like Barnes teaching the defense himself, but he could use experienced help developing point guards and big men. Add to that the need for recruiting connections and you can see we need a lot of help here.

Would love to see a new offense installed.

Bring in Pete Carrill to teach the Princeton back-cut offense. How ’bout the Bobby Knight motion offense? Tear it down and turn it into the Paul Westhead Loyola Marymount Hank Gathers / Bo Kimble run & gun. With the talent that UT brings in annually, you know this would be interesting.

As bad as I’d like to see the offense changed, I think their biggest problem right now is the defense & rebounding. Bradley’s fine and J’Covan’s tries hard but JHam is one of the worst defenders I’ve ever seen. Let’s hope they buckle down in the next couple of years and learn how to man-up.

if a group of private school white boys can run it and have success at the collegiate level, Imagine what we could do with the princeton offense. I love it too, instead of backdoor layups , our team would be and espn highlight reel every night.

Princeton

If you want to know what that offense looks like with athletes watch Georgetown.

Offensive system

You need a “pro” style system that will attract top recruits. I doubt many kids are looking to master the Princeton offense, but you might try whatever Utah runs since they seem to get a lot of back cuts. I’m used to watching the Spurs, and their offense does not seem too complicated. In any case, you want a system that freshmen can move into without a lot of extra work, since we are going to be concentrating on defense. And once you have a system established, stay with it so that it will only be the newcomers that have to learn it.

the problem with that is that nba “pro” style systems can’t work nearly as well with college players. nba players, even on the worst teams, are the best players in the world. they are all fundamentally sound or just such freak athletes that they can get away with less fundamentals, but either way there is no way college players can consistently flourish using the same systems. watching the nba, how many open shots do they miss compared to watching the ut team this year?

So you have system for guys that can't hit open shots?

If the guys can’t hit open shots, no system is going to help them very much.

What open shots are you referring to? Rarely in 2010, did you see any kickouts to wide-open Texas players, catching the defense out of position. Heck, you barely saw any meaningful off-ball screens that freed open shooters.

I was just talking about this with someone the other day.

It’s an excellent point. Seems like we need some separation between Rick and the team. He’s a great coach, but he seemed to do so much better as the Big Bad Boss Man. How has that changed in the past 4 years?

by The Mack Attack on Mar 19, 2010 5:08 PM CDT reply actions

Rick Barnes is a good coach

But I wonder if he’s humble and flexible enough to realize that he needs to change. Makes me really appreciate Mack Brown — we had trouble between younger and older players when Derry, Killebrew, Odwuegwu, Marcus Griffin, etc were starting over younger, more talented players. But Brown and the football coaches have really learned to balance loyalty and the need to play the best athlete.

My gut feel is the some or all of the freshman are punks and refuse to buy in, making it harder for Barnes to realize that they have a point.

Not Sean

but what about some other ex head coaches who have been successful at some previous point in time but who have gotten canned for recent poor performance. They probably won’t be able to get another “big time” job and would have to go back to a small school and work their way back up, so they might be open to an assist job at a big time program (like Melvin Watkins going to Mizzou after being canned by A&M).

Two guys who come to mind are Likliter from Iowa, who had built a successful program at Butler before going to Iowa, and Ernie Kent at Oregon who had some successful years at Oregon before falling on hard times. I think these guys would be a big plus on the recruiting front too. I think a recruit might be more impressed if an Ernie Kent came into his house as opposed to Chris Ogden.

That's all assuming that the recruits know them

If I were a recruit, I’d be more concerned with the level of success of the program and who’s running the show ultimately
