NCAA Tournament Second Round Open Thread
Half of your Sweet 16 will be decided by day's end. CBS has divided its telecast into quarters on Saturday: one game for the entire nation to start, then two games, then three games, and finally two games in primetime.
Friday didn't produce nearly as many upsets as did Thursday. Overall, ten lower seeded teams advanced to the second round: (14) Ohio, (13) Murray State, (12) Cornell, (11) Old Dominion, (11) Washington, (10) St Mary's, (10) Missouri, (10) Georgia Tech, (9) Wake Forest, and (9) Northern Iowa.
Today, I'll take Ohio and Washington to move into the Sweet 16 as double digits seeds, and I won't be shocked if St. Mary's, Murray State, or BYU pull off upsets either.

I'd agree with your upsets above except
I don’t expect BYU to hold their own with K-State. Would love it though.

This Omar kid is pretty darn good.

Can we finally pop the Big East balloon
Overrated conference

Big East
Winners Rd 1: Syracuse, Pitt, West Virginia, Villanova
Losers Rd 1: Notre Dame, Louisville, Marquette, Georgetown.
4-4 puls Nova’s loss now puts the Big East at just 4-5.

yes, but the seeds man
obviously overseeded.

No, not knee jerk guy
I agree. Overrated on the season. I do expect Syracuse and West Virginia to be around awhile. If they both make the Final Four, the Big East will look a little stronger.
--AW--
I've been looking at both 'Cuse and WV to lose in the Elite Eight
With Pitt losing to Xavier in the Sweet Sixteen. Yea, verily I say unto you, the Big East will be looked upon with great disdain.

so I feel stupid
I think I’m the only one here who forgot to fill out a bracket. First time since 1988 when I was a junior in high school.

I know a few had Murray St over Vandy
anyone honestly have them in S16?
by Infield Elephant on Mar 20, 2010 3:10 PM CDT reply actions
I did
I also have them losing in the Sweet 16 to St. Mary’s.

Haha yeah I had my midmajors wrong
I have St. Mary’s in the Elite Eight beating what I thought would be Notre Dame.
I had Murray St in the Sweet 16

Northern Iowa
playing fantastic team basketball. Great passing, hustle, and three-point shooting. Team defense has been very good too.
Collins looks frustrated and KU in trouble.
Northern Iowa up 36-28 at half.

Kansas in a spot of trouble
Down 10, under 16 tv timeout in second half.
Jayhawks need to get the ball inside more and stop trying to match UNI threes.
--AW--
beat me to that.
a little shocked now

They usually do, but N Iowa looking good still.

Been trying to tell people all year that he’s a notch below the truly elite PGs of the past.

Not sure why UNI guard
ran away from Cole. Allowed him to turn to the middle and finish. Why abandon the double?
Sloppy min by UNI there.

Comment I found on a KU board
Collins finally decides to throw Self’s idiotic offense out the window and distribute.
by goingforthecorner on Mar 20, 2010 6:14 PM CDT reply actions
KU losing would make me feel A LOT better about this season
If they lose, Self’s coaching job <<< Barnes (who called this season his worst)
What’s their excuse? They’re loaded with talented VETERANS.
by goingforthecorner on Mar 20, 2010 6:17 PM CDT up reply actions
Reaching
And this is the issue with defining seasons based on tourney success.
KU went 15-1 in the Big 12 and won the conference tourney also. They are the No. 1 overall seed and have been the best team in the country all year. Hard to say that Self has done a bad job, win or lose against N. Iowa.
--AW--
Doesn't a loss to UNI ruin their season?
conference championships are nice, but hardly what a team is striving for. The entire nonconference, conference, and conference tournament is all lumped into one chunk that comes 2nd to the Big Dance. Your season should be defined by how they perform in the NCAA tournament, especially a program like Kansas.
by goingforthecorner on Mar 20, 2010 6:22 PM CDT up reply actions
Probably does ruin their season
The KU fans that I know won’t care about the conference and Big 12 tourney titles if they lose in the 2nd round of the NCAA, so you’re right in that sense.
But I’m just pointing out that may not be fair. KU has accomplished a ton this year.
--AW--
Oh yeah, I agree
the season and tournament champs will be noted in the books. But years from now, people would remember this team as the #1 seed that fell in the 2nd round to a mid-major school. Even more surprising is how this team has players that won a championship just 2 years ago.
Same applies to the KU teams that lost to Bucknell and Bradley. They’ll be remembered for being upset.

This is why I don't want a playoff in CFB
The emphasis people put on the NCAA basketball tournament has made the regular season almost an afterthought, putting the cart so far ahead that the horse can’t even see it.

I'd rather not see a 64 team tournament
and it’s college football. The regular season would matter less, but not the passion of college football fans. I find it hard to believe that more postseason games featuring the best teams would be a bad thing.
by goingforthecorner on Mar 20, 2010 6:31 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't want to get into arguing the nitty-gritty of it
But I disagree that the postseason games would necessarily feature the best, or most deserving, teams. The fundamental problem with tournaments is the fact that a team like KU has to worry about being eliminated from (what is perhaps incorrectly portrayed as) the national championship by a team that isn’t even ranked in the top 25.

I don't get this
If KU really is the better team, they will win the game. What if that team was overrated all along? The tournament is all about “put up, or shut up”. The BCS is essentially a popularity contest by humans.
by goingforthecorner on Mar 20, 2010 6:46 PM CDT up reply actions
The better team wins the majority of the time
Not every time.

Are you kidding?
Losing in an upset in the tourney after having come in as the #1 team in the country, Big 12 champs, and a terrific regular season should necessarily eliminate any coach from consideration as having a worse season than Barnes had. Heck, any team in the country except maybe for the two that end up in the tournament championship game would trade for a season like Self has had.

Although I picked KU to lose in the tournament final...
…I pretty much wrap up my office pool if KU loses this game. That said, I’m as Kansan as I am Texan, I’ve been to a lot of KU games, and I have known more than a handful of KU players. I’d rather they win.

UNI up 6, under 4
Two bad threes by KU there—Taylor and Collins. KU has been dominating in the paint and they want to jack from 22 feet.
--AW--
West Coast Bball
In other news, the West Coast Conference is 3-0 and the Pac 10 is about to get to 3-0 also. Washington up 17 pts.
Cal gets Duke tomorrow and Zaga gets Syracuse.
--AW--
In the Big Dance, you throw everything out the window
All the stats in the regular season and preconceived notions – they don’t matter. Too bad in college football, that’s what decides who plays in the championship game unfortunately.
by goingforthecorner on Mar 20, 2010 6:37 PM CDT up reply actions

UNI gets the offensive rebound though

what a ballsy shot. I thought they’d try to run down the clock.
by goingforthecorner on Mar 20, 2010 6:46 PM CDT reply actions
I'm glad UNI is playing to win
a conservative approach would be to drain clock under 10 secs
by goingforthecorner on Mar 20, 2010 6:49 PM CDT reply actions
Anything but a turnover here
UNI is 1 free throw away from winning this game.
by goingforthecorner on Mar 20, 2010 6:50 PM CDT reply actions
I don't understand why teams start playing conservative down the end to protect a lead.
You gotta play to win, not to avoid losing.
Wow, so who do y'all think comes out of the Midwest now?
Ohio St?

I've watched a lot of KU basketball
and this didn’t look fluky to me. They were tough on the boards and played fantastic defense.
Sweet 16 so far
No. 11 Washington, No. 10 St Mary’s, No. 9 N. Iowa, No. 6 Tennessee, No. 5 Butler, and No. 3 Baylor
--AW--
So kansas should be looking into firing their coach now, right?..

Kentucky Dominating
My only positive take-away from Thursday’s loss was that we, Texas fans, were spared the steamrolling that was waiting in the second round.
--AW--
I'll take a steamrolling + a tournament victory
over a heartbreaking loss that ended with an embarrassing choke-job in overtime.
