Help PB Move Back To Austin
My apologies for the off topic solicitation, but.... after far, far too long away, I'm finally moving back home to Austin in June. God willing, I'll never leave again.
I'm posting this because there's not much of a chance that I'll be able to squeeze a visit down to Austin between now and the time I move back home, which makes hunting for a place to live something of a challenge. I don't have time to look at places to buy, but I don't mind signing a lease of a place sight unseen.
So, if you're in the city and having any helpful information or tips, I'd be most grateful for your input. Looking to live centrally, with relatively quick access to either MoPac or I-35. Two or three bedrooms preferred.

Dude...
my neighborhood is located on Riverside and Ben White. Lot’s of 2 and 3 bedroom homes at a cheap rate. Do you own a gun? If so, you’ll love it here and shouldn’t have too many problems after awhile. Let me know if you need any help looking. The neighborhood is called Riverside Meadows. It’s a fun place to live.

They just built a new HEB Plus on Riverside...
That means the sketchiness of the neighborhood decreased a few percentage points. I think I can finally leave the shank at home and downgrade my renters insurance now.

Try downtown
If I were looking for a temporary residence, I’d consider one of those loft-condo places downtown. Pricey, but not so bad for the short term and you get to live in the heart of the city.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.
Orangetree is pretty cozy
if you don’t mind the insanity of west campus. i’ve lived there for three years and am just about to move, but rent is a little pricey – $1695ish for a 2/2.
honestly, I’d start somewhere in Hyde Park. That’s where I’ve wanted to live since I moved here, and it’s a nice area with the college feel, but without the noise. Rent over there usually isn’t that bad, depending on how far from campus you want to live.

I'm looking to sell my auto
It’s a 2007 Tahoe, black only 34,000 miles.
Great condition.

Does that count as two or three bedrooms?
Boycott Facebook. It's lame. Inform your real friends that you're going to communicate with them like a normal human being, and then delete your account. Seriously.

Apartment
i really like the Triangle, it’s a pretty nice place. if that’s not your speed check these out, prices floor plans etc..: http://www.umovefree.com/City/austin-apartments-tx/
Triangle
I lived there during my clerkship. The college kids were a little rowdy at times, but it wasn’t too bad. In fact, my next door neighbor was a UT football player. (You’d all know him if I gave his name, but, alas, that seems like TMI.) I’d recommend it.
doesnt matter
if you look at the UT directory you can see where each (current) football player lives
Urban Squared Realty
These guys got us a sweet place in 78704 for $700 off of the original price per month. That’s $8,400 a year in savings. Can’t recommend enough.

Enfield and Pease
Peter, I live right on the corner of Enfield and Pease, about halfway between Mopac and Lamar. Its an older building and the appliances aren’t new, but you can’t beat the price and location. It’s about $650-$700 for a big 1 bedroom, and maybe $950 for a two bedroom. My neighbors that had a two bedroom just moved out this past weekend so there should be availability. If you’re interested just shoot me an email and I can answer any questions you might have and get you in touch with the owner.
Cozy couch just north of campus
No fleas, ticks, or otherwise biting insects. Some mosquito hawks, but how else do you get rid of the biting ones? Beer shelf is literally feet away in the classic white refrigerator. And you can’t beat the price – FREE* rent!
*free rent used as a marketing device. Rent will be randomly determined at the end of each month based on your participation in standard household chores. Does not include access to stairs, bathroom, television remote, or fridge. Additional fees will be assessed at the end of your stay, where I will unilaterally determine the amount that you already owe me. Sometimes you may find the dog on the couch. In that case you may rent a chair in the kitchen at a reasonable rate.

Roberston Hill
Hey PB, I’m a long time reader of BON but I’m finally coming out of the wood work to take part in some March Madness.
Anyways, along with introducing myself over here, I want to tell you to check out Robertson Hill off of 35. I lived there last year and they usually have low rent on a quality place. I paid around $624 a month for a 2/2 when I signed as low income.
Plus, being able to walk to Sixth every night was worth it just by itself.
Robertson Hill
A friend of mine lived there and liked it. I toured it and thought it was a little bit pricey. My impression was that they were charging downtown prices for an east side complex.
Thanks everyone
Heard from several old friends who are in this business and are going to help get me set up.
Appreciate all the tips.

LMBO!
Only hired help with the move in August, but mid to late June is initiation to the duldrums of summer for sure.
PB, some things to consider…
1. What are you going to do with the snow shovel?
2. Is your girl from Texas? If not then sell her on the water weight loss angle. :) or not.

Looking for a sofa and a mattress
Both were set on fire by the ex. Surprisingly she wasn’t a WVU or tOSU fan. Sleeping on air mattress for 2 months . Any leads? :)
Stumpy: It's called the '80s. Ford was president, Nixon was in the White House, and FDR was running this country into the ground.

Austin Native Here
I myself live in Bee Caves, but my friend who works for Dell lives at the intersectional area of jollyville and braker. It’s a GREAT location. Everything you need is there. HEB within 2 min walk, 30 sec drive, 24 hr fitness in the same complex as HEB, restaurants / theaters / entertainment everywhere.
1 minutes access to 183 N/S, 3-4 minute access to 360 N/S, Mopac, and I-35. Look near that area of that major interchage of mopac / 183 / 360. There are some good values for apartments there. Most are relatively new because that area is more recently developed.
Places to avoid:
-South Congress unless you are into overpriced yuppy culture, which I’m not dissing if you are.
- Montopolis – it’s just in a bad neighborhood, bad access to the freeways you desire. Hispanic district representative pickets everywhere…
by LonghornHoosier on Mar 24, 2010 9:28 AM CDT reply actions
Austin native myself
And to me, Jollyville and Braker is way the hell north Austin. These days, I suppose that’s considered central, but my idea of central is skewed by the Austin I grew up in.
Appreciate the suggestions.
You ain't hurt...
I agree that I would consider it north-ish (not way the hell north though – Austin goes reeeeeeeaaally far north now – the transition into Georgetown / Cedar Park is pretty seemless now because there’s a good amount of developed North Austin), but the greatest feature about the location is the access to the multitude of freeways. Realistically it takes about an 8-11 minute drive downtown depending on traffic. If it’s bad on i-35, then it would kinda suck. But downtown at rush hour is just as bad as freeway traffic.

I lived more or less right where he is refering to (la Mirage apts). Loved it there. At the time you could get a lot more for your money. The only probelm I had was that it wasn’t on a bus route. I usually parked at farwest to get take the bus to campus. It doesn’t take long to get downtown as long as it is not between 5 and 630ish. There is also a tun of stuff to do right there, including a micro brew/restaraunt (awesome for a home brewer). You ate also not far from Pluckers, trudy’s, rudy’s or the new flying saucer. Very easy to get to 35. I loved it there.

Austin native here too
many of us have a sort of preconception about some of the parts of the area that have grown up, especially surrounding the Dell empire where trees are scarce. No offense intended.
We are tucked away in apartment land behind the trees two blocks off 360 and Spicewood. I moved back a couple of years ago in June after being gone for several years and I would advise only that you find something with some shade. It seems obvious but you’ll be thankful in August. Some shade and an electric barbecue smoker and you’re set.

Congratulations on moving home, there’s no other place like it on earth. You’ll have your heat, no worries.

PB, here's a great rental coming available:
My neighbors across the street are moving this summer and will be offering their house for lease. They are great people, super nice family. Their house is absolutely impeccable, since he is a contractor by trade. It is in a quiet neighborhood of townhomes on Hwy 290E about 3 miles east of I-35, near Hwy 183. I can be downtown in ten minutes depending on traffic.
I think their house has the same floor plan as mine: two big bedrooms, two full baths, a loft with a spiral stair, a sizeable patio, an atrium, a fireplace, an oversize two-car garage. The HOA dues are $150 a month and there’s a pool and tennis courts, as well as lots of green space for dogs to play, etc. Neighbors on this street are all very nice and chill, almost exclusively owner-occupied.
PB would have to learn how to play the bongos?
I smell a BON scandal brewing. Or maybe that smell is coming from the next door neighbor’s.

Again.
As Somebody living in a bad area of DC/Maryland and paying 1620 month for a 2 bedroom, ya’ll can all go jump off a bridge.
No offense, but simply based on your above comment -with no other non-blog based knowledge of you-I would say that your life sucks.
:)
goddammit you gotta be kidding.
im moving up there in august. to dc that is. any area recommendations?
also PB i’ve always loved it hear on the east side/manor rd area. rent is very reasonable, a lot of young yuppie families, and the hipsters dont bite.
Good Lord that's horrible.
That’s slightly less than all my bills combined per month. I don’t know how people do it.

DC Areas
Sort of depends on whether you have kids or not. If you do, and want good public schools, you’ll need to look in Montgomery County (MD) or North Arlington (VA) if you want close in ( meaning serviced by Metro [subway] and the costs associated with that). If you want even better schools, but will be further away, look in Fairfax county (VA). Even further out, Prince William (VA) and Loudon Counties (VA) and Howard County (MD).
There are a decent k-3 public school here and there in the district of columbia and one good public school above that (the Oyster School), but if you plan on living in the district with kids, you’re probably sending your kids to private school.
If kids aren’t an issue: Georgetown/ Old Town[Alexandria, VA] if you want the the really rich, old crowd (Think Highland Park in Dallas). All of Upper NW is good, but hideously expensive. Columbia Heights/Mt. Pleasant are a little edgier, younger. Capital Hill is close, but a bit quiet outside of the hill staffer bars. Urban Pioneering: Petworth/Shaw/U Street. Party all the time: Adams Morgan. Gay? DuPont, although the city is very rainbow friendly, so that’s not really an issue anywhere.
Maryland is all burbs. VA has some expensive yuppie neighborhoods around Clarendon and Del Ray.
I live in Cheverly, which is a metro accessible bedroom community in PG COunty. The Town is safe and pretty, but PG has a terrible reputation, and the rent I pay is quite low by DC standards, given I have a stand alone house, good size yard, and a ten minute walk to the subway.
im probably not going to be able to afford anything inner city that would be decent.
someone told me alexandria. and looking at craigslist, it seems that if i give myself some time to look, i can get a good deal. you know anything about the area?
Alexandria
I know a fair bit, I used to live near there. Alexandria has bad schools, unlike other Northern Virginia locations. Not DC/Detroit Bad, but definitely worse than anything you’d encounter in a standard Texas Suburb. Old Town is very old, and looks that way, with historic brick town homes and cobblestone streets. Pricey and touristy. South of Old town is bellehaven, which has some nice post war town home communities, south of that, it’s residential neighborhoods down to Mt. Vernon. All expensive. Going towards Arlington, there’s Del Ray, which is one of the cutest communities you’ll see, but it’s not cheap. There are townhome communities scattered around Alexandria that are cheaper than Single home.
You might look at Fairlington/Shirlington. They are post war condo’s in S. Arlington a short busride away from the Pentagon (which has a giant Metro station). It’s not horrifically expensive. DC has worse traffic than anything you can imagine unless you’ve lived in LA, so figuring out your commute and if you a public transit person, which I HIGHLY recommend, should shape your housing choice. E mail me at lonestar190 at yahoo dot com if you have more questions.
Alexandria?
Yeah I’ve forgotten the Titans.
Stumpy: It's called the '80s. Ford was president, Nixon was in the White House, and FDR was running this country into the ground. I was bummin' in a hole-in-the-wall town in what is now called "Utah".
The search ends
Moving to Brentwood, just off 2222.
Thanks to everyone for the input/help/suggestions.
