Cedric Reed in Austin for practice/sightseeing
Both sites are reporting that Cleveland defensive end Cedric Reed is in town watching practice and seeing the city of Austin.
Reed has been quiet publicly about his intentions, but all the information coming out from people close to Reed suggests that the Longhorns lead and a decision will happen in the near future.

Let's hope we get him
I also hope that we get some guys to step up at DT. I thought Howell was going to be the one but I guess that is still up in the air per the link. (Whatever the case Howell better out play McFarland-for some reason I will be watching their careers and comparing them which is probably not cool, but I just can’t help it).
Your comparison of Howell and McFarland . . . .
is not particularly cool and if your comparison needs McFarland to underachieve, it is shaping up to be a disappointment. I didn’t know what McFarland did last season so I looked. I just hope Howell is successful and productive. It looks like McFarland is going to start for OU next fall.

2.5 sacks (1.5 vs. Aggie, 1 vs. Tech), 8 total tackles (5 solo) in seven games as a true frosh
Not terrible, not great. But yeah, he could start, since McCoy’s in the draft and Granger was denied an additional season of eligibility.

No bad mojo
It was really a low blow what McFarland did and said—especially at Christmas time. He, Thayer Evans, and the NYT are all dogs in my opinion. That said, I would never wish him harm or anything stupid like that. In fact, I do hope that we line up against him this year because I want to see our new and improved OL pancake his ass, and also watch us run the ball over top of him.
I was really hoping to hear that Howell was becoming a madman or that DJ (Derek Johnson) was stepping up to be a strong starting contender at DL. Success is the best remedy and our team already showed that last year and I suspect we will be showing some more this year.
I didn't think you wished McFarland any harm.
But how he eventually compares with Howell or how he plays against anyone other than us is a non-issue to me. McFarland was obviously a highly regarded recruit and he looks like he will be a contributor at OU. I don’t think he is the second coming of Tommie Harris, but he had a good freshman year and seems to be coming along quickly this spring. I think he would undoubtedly be in the regular rotation for us in 2010 if he had come here.

We Have Taken Pleasure in "Mack Brown Jinx"
Where players who did not act with a requisite amount of class towards the Horns somehow underachieve. I see no issue with getting some level of satisfaction if J Mac underperforms. Hoping for injury or misfortune would be over the line.
Jarvis Jones
I didn’t know that he hurt his neck last year against Oregon. It now appears that the injury is much more serious than originally believed. Kiffien is now saying that it may be career ending for Jones. Apparenlty the jinx continues which is a shame for Jones since he had fantastic potential.

To hell with McFarland
The more I think about it the more I feel like I’m wasting my time worrying about someone I don’t like for no reason at all.
What matters is that we beat the hell out of OU. Period. Whether McFarland plays or Howell plays, I don’t really care as much as I want a W in the win column for the Horns. Thanks for getting me re-focused on the important stat.
cedric reed
he’s hanging out with jackson jeffcoat.
Yeah,,,
didn’t know he was on campus already.

Well I know he wasn't a December graduate
He didn’t even commit til the week before national signing day.
The only way he is here is if he drove down for the weekend to watch practice as well, which I suppose is possible but interesting that no one else has reported it.
I believe that most of the 2010 commits are in
except for several who have sports commitments, like Carrington Byndom (baseball).

So how does that work GoBR?
People like Hicks and Jeffcoat didn’t commit until February…how were they able to graduate and get here….or get out of all that class to get to practice?
Not in school.
Just visiting campus this week and probably taking in the practice on Saturday. It’s still only Wood, McCoy, and AJ White who are enrolled early.

Mack quote from IT:
"All the running backs are good," Brown said, "but not one of them has really jumped out. They could all be playing at another school. They could all be starting at some places. We just need them to be consistent."

Anyone else think this is a bit weird for a coach to say, given that he’s trying to recruit guys like Malcolm Brown into this already-crowded backfield? Honestly, it almost seems like a coach who’s subtly trying to tell some guys it may be time to move on.

Nice Article
I think the message is the RB Job is open for the taking… describing most of the RBs as nondescript.
In news on the Secondary… article says there is a lot of depth at Safety with Brewster and Vaccaro coming on and starting to develop.
Also they noted every practice has had a trick play from the Offense and Special teams, keeping everyone guessing or Boise St influence coming into effect?
Mack can't worry about who is not in the fold, yet
Texas recruits people into competitive situations. Just like Jeffcoat said, nothing was promised him, just the opportunity to come in and compete. It will be the same for Malcolm Brown if he chooses the good guys.

Starting RB spot is still open
I think that is all that Coach Brown is saying. He would probably like nothing more than for one or two of them to start seperating themselve as elite. This should be good news to M. Brown or A. Green since they would have a chance to compete for the starting job on day one. Also interesting that Whaley is getting so many reps. He may be moving spots and the sooner they decide if he is stating at RB or moving positions the better.
You're not
trust me

I am warming up
I like him, but I’m just not in love yet. I still want that superstar with break away speed who can possibly take it to the house everytime he gets the ball. He may be that guy this year and I’m hoping that he is.
I'm with you there
I’m on a wait and see approach with Newton. I think he showed some good things last year, just not consistently.

I'm still waiting for the Ricky Williams/Cedric Benson to come on scene
haven’t seen him yet on our roster but Malcom Brown might just be him
Hodges Mitchell
bridged the gap between Ricky & Cedric. We didn’t expect much from him but he came on to be pretty solid. IMO we’re okay ’til the next great one comes along.
No
I can’t wait to see him find some space to run. As much as everybody talks about power running game he’s got the cutback ability that the others don’t ; if they create some holes in the line he could make life miserable in the secondaries. Also love me a RB that can pass block.

Fozzy graduating in June?
I just read that Fozzy is graduating two years early (good for him) but what does that mean exactly? He still has eligibility so I guess he’d have to become a grad student to use it.
It Ain't Easy, But It's Worth It.
He'd be working on his grad degree as some do
Thats a great accomplishment and shows his commitment to his academics.

In related news...
I am also in Austin sightseeing.
Your tongue can't repel flavor of that magnitude!!
Is Jackson Jeffcoat hanging out with you too?

Please let me know if you see Unicorn of Pegasus. I heard they were spotted on 6th Street in the wee hours of the morning.
Thought you guys were not offering Reed? Newton is good, just does not have breakaway speed.
by miketag on Mar 28, 2010 4:57 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
Breakaway speed is a nice bonus sometimes
But UT running backs are having a hard time getting to the level where they could even use breakaway speed if they had any, so it hasn’t really come up. I’d be thrilled for Newton to regularly get to that level of the defense, even if he were tackled after 20yds. instead of taking it to the house.

I saw a headline somewhere
That he did go visit A&M. Didn’t see what was said.
"I want to be remembered as the guy who gave his all whenever he was on the field."

Aggieyell now saying he did visit again Sunday
That makes his 3rd trip to Aggieland. Cleveland is pretty close to College Station so it is easy for him to get over there, but it seems like he has serious interest in the Aggies.
From what I heard
The interest in Aggie is from his Dad, not so much him.
