How far would our bball team have to go . . .
for you not to look back on this year with a mixture of disappointment and disgust?
I have been waiting to ask this question for a while but have held back in an attempt to not judge this young team too quickly. After watching us get our ass kicked by Baylor I am now well beyond the point of calling this year a disaster. Never have I seen so much talent (young or not) do so little. Do not mistake me for a results oriented fan only. Far from it, I am more process oriented and that is exactly why this year's team has been so embarassing. If our team played together, played anywhere near their potential, showed up at all for road games, could make a free throw consistently or showed reasonable improvement throughout the year I would feel a lot better. Unfortunately, they have not.
To answer my topic question I say the elite eight would leave me feeling rather meh about this year given the embarassment of the last two months and the final four is the only destination that would save this year for me (and yes, i realize the near astronomical unlikelihood of us getting that far). Anyway, what do you guys think? What would save this year for you?

Not to sure this team is really all that talented
…atleast I have not seen the talent on a consistent basis….none of the freshmen have blown my socks off….I know they were highly rated coming in, but I have not seen it on the floor this year.
Hooking em to a Another National Championship.
I just want to see us not beat ourselves for a few games.
Improving and going out while playing well are the only things I want. A deep run would be nice, but I don’t demand it.
????
It confuses me that even one person put nothing can save this season for them. Really? If we won it all somehow, you’d still be pissed about the rest of the season? Makes no sense to me…..
Anyway, based on the wording of the question, I’d be “happy” if we made it to the Final 4. However, a sweet 16 berth would at least take some of the sting out of the year. Problem now is that our seed will probably have us playing a tougher team in round 2 than if we are able to make it to the sweet 16….
not realisitc to win it all
The b-ball team stinks right now and to even have them reach the 2nd round would be a miracle. I think some people know its not realistic for this team to do anything in the tournament. Texas will lose in the first round because they will play a pretty good team. Is Texas a lock to make the tournament?
I read an article on orangebloods about if Barnes deserves a mulligan for this year. I say no because he got his mulligan when Durant was there and they got bounced in the second round.
Is Texas a lock to make the tournament?
Yes, and the fact you asked that means you either talk in pure hyperbole or you know nothing about basketball.
I was being sarcastic
If UConn doesn’t get in, Texas should give their bid to them.
I'll take the Sweet 16 at this point
that would mean we would “upset” a higher seed assuming we’re in the 7-9 seed range. Besides, there’s a few people here that would have to eat a lot of crow if that happened.

bball
That’s baseball?
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.
Damn well should be.
I have beat wholesale ass for a whole lot less.

Touche
However, I find that baseball is watchable at both the collegiate and Olympic (well, not anymore) levels, and mostly watchable at the pro level, while basketball is only unsucktacstic at the collegiate level. The NBA and Olympic basketball are garbage. I think that says a little something about these sports.

Also says something about the Olympics

Second weekend
If we actually beat the lower seed we play (no reason to think we will) and then show up and win the second game to get to the sweet sixteen, that will be enough for me to think that this team actually took something positive away from this season. A first round exit pretty much will be a fitting end to how we’ve been playing since conference play started.
If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!
I’m in the group that thinks we overestimated the incoming talent. At least one hadn’t played high school ball in a year. I don’t care how good they looked in AAU (or whatever those leagues are) against other high school talent in league with with unorganized play that closely resembles street ball. That doesn’t cut it in college.
Hamilton seems to have gotten it, for the most part, but if he does get a round 1 evaluation it will be based on long term potential rather than what he has actually done.
Brown and Avery both have been very incosistent.
Pittman may not get much help, but at a certain point you just have to say “F it” and make your own. James hasn’t had much help either, but he goes out there, busts his ass, and averages a double double.
Then you have to throw in injuries. Losing Ward hurt. And as much as Balbay was an offensive liability, losing his defense has really hurt when you consider how poor our freshmen are playing D.
As long as we make the second day of the tournament and are in the game, I will be OK. If we make the sweet 16, then this will have been a good season when you account for injuries.
No Big XII Scouting Reports
I am hoping that playing teams (especially the weekend team if we win in the first round) that haven’t had a ton of advanced scouting on us will be helpful. This team was scouted against, but Rick didn’t (or the team wouldn’t or couldn’t) make the adjustments.
Would love to see us play up to a 6 seed this weekend (2 wins?) and pick up a Butler or a New Mexico in the second round.
I am also hoping against hope that the Big XII is just damn good and wrecks shit in the tourney. Maybe we aren’t as bad as we thought, just the 4th-5th best team in a kick ass conference.
(Is this the bargaining stage?)
Only Gary Johnson
has played up to expectations.
Dex tore up the NCAAs last year this year he did it against a team of midgets a few times.
Damion James has been less than expected. If we are to do anything in the NCAAs he must become the go to guy.
Bradley has been good.He has all the tools but he has not been the next coming of Durant.
If we are to make the 16 Brown has to play the point and play it well. Can he do it we will see soon.
Hamilton has to revert to his game at OSU if he can bust the zones then Dex, Johnson and James can be effective.
Wangmene,Hill and Chappy have not progressed. Instead they have regressed. One of them must step up in the tourney.
I am almost to the point of Aggie “wait till next year.”

James is averaging 18-10 with a block and a steal a game. Other than free throws (65%), how is he less than expected? He’s had 2 ‘bad’ games: @ A&M and @ KStae (21-12 total for both games). His contribution is consistently one of the few good things we have to talk about after each loss. We seem to rotate Bradley, Brown, ect through the “maybe this game was the step forward for them that turns our season around” delusion.
Damion James has had, by far, the best season of his UT career.
You need to seriously reevaluate your grade on him. Damion has been a beast on both ends of the court, continues to add to his totals as the Big XII’s all-time leading rebounder, and has totally transformed himself into the Horns’ best offensive weapon and one of the very best in the conference. He was one of 2 players to be voted unanimously to the all-conference team and is in the discussion for NCAA POY awards, maybe even 1st or 2nd team AA. Simply put, he’s become the player that we all (‘cept for you) hoped he’d become.
Sweet Sixteen
I just hope this season doesnt impact recruiting down the line. We have two highly touted Freshman and neither has lived up to expectations.
Vince Young = Greatness
How does that affect recruiting?

Face it, this team never gelled.
Damion has been a beast on both ends of the court. But Justin & Dex, your other senior leaders, took a step back. We just gotta face it that maybe they hit their ceiling last year. Still like ‘em, they just didn’t contribute like we thought they would as seniors. That’s what’s hurt this team. Senior leadership is very important.
If Varez doesn’t get hurt, who knows what might have happened. He & Balbay had some major misfortune. JHam & J’Covan are big-time talented but still very rough around the edges. Bradley had a great freshman year and really carried this team as a 2nd fiddle to Damion.
1st year in a long time that we haven’t had an amazing guard in the backcourt. Besides 2 of your 3 seniors not playing well, the lack of great guard play is what has hurt this team. Haven’t been able to say that about the Horns in a long time.
Still loved this team and any of those players who gave it their all. It’s hard to swallow sometimes but this was not a banner team for the greatness we’re so used to as a Longhorn fan. They’ll be back.
