Baseball Falls to Houston 1-0, Game Three Open Thread

Brandon Workman gave up a leadoff triple on his first pitch followed by a wild pitch on his second. He then pitched 8 spectacular innings giving up 3 hits and nothing else. Texas' offense however only was able to muster 3 hits of their own and no runs in a 1-0 loss. 10 games in and it's a familiar story: great pitching not being met by great hitting. In a sign that Augie may be looking for answers JUCO transfer Paul Montalbano got a two out pinch hit in the top of the 9th and very nearly tied the game if not for a tremendous defensive play by Houston's shortstop. Either way, it's baseball, crap happens, and you just have to move on and forget about it. The answer to their hitting woes has clearly not been moving to a ballpark that's even more cavernous except for a short porch in left field.

Texas plays Missouri today at 11 AM in a nonconference game. A win would give the Horns a "series" win for the weekend, which is really all you're looking for every weekend. We suspect Cole Green will be on the mound for Texas. You can watch the game online for free here. Time to take out that live rooster and break whatever's been cursing the Texas bats.

Interesting comments from Brandon Loy yesterday

Said the team was not playing with heart or hard work. Ironically, we were in the midst of an embarrassing series against Missouri 2 years ago when a freshman pitcher named Chance Ruffin asserted himself as a leader and gave his teammates a good, swift kick in the ass on the bus before the final game of the weekend. And it was enough to pull them out of their funk and salvage one win from an otherwise miserable weekend. Wonder if Loy is saying the same things in the locker room that he’s saying to the press.

Interesting

Certainly not as desperate as we were in 2008 though. I think Etier and Kevin Lusson are in danger of losing jobs. Loy, Keyes, Rowe, Shepherd and Rupp are definitely safe.

Actually the home team

We’re in the top of 2nd right now.

Missouri had a fly out to center, single to left, and a double play ground out in the top of the 1st.

by bassale47 on Mar 7, 2010 11:13 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, a few minutes early

Green only threw 6 pitches, so the first half of the inning was over in a blink.

by bassale47 on Mar 7, 2010 11:15 AM CST up reply actions

Keyes smokes a single off the box in left

Then Rupp caught going to third. Just an awful break, if he hadn’t hit it as hard Rupp would’ve been easily at second

by 40AS on Mar 7, 2010 11:07 AM CST reply actions

No kidding

The strikeouts are getting old. Guess we don’t have anyone else who can play 3rd base. Same thing with Etier at 2nd.

by bassale47 on Mar 7, 2010 11:26 AM CST up reply actions

I think they'll both have short leashes going forward

2B isn’t the toughest position to play defensively

by 40AS on Mar 7, 2010 11:28 AM CST up reply actions

And another single

3-0 Mizzou, 1st and 3rd two away

by 40AS on Mar 7, 2010 11:34 AM CST reply actions

Good morning folks

Just joining you. I saw the third run but to be down 3 runs so early doesn’t bode well. Has it been good hits by mizzou or poor fielding by Texas? What is wrong with our offense lately?

by Ohio Horn on Mar 7, 2010 11:38 AM CST reply actions

Texas has hit the ball hard

Keyes smoked a ball too hard that led to Rupp getting thrown out, then last inning Mizzou put on a hit and run that had the ball go right at the spot Loy had vacated

by 40AS on Mar 7, 2010 11:40 AM CST up reply actions

Groundout to Etier ends the inning

Then he walks to start Bot 3.

Shepherd not bunting, singles to left

by 40AS on Mar 7, 2010 11:40 AM CST reply actions

New pitcher is 0-0 with an 8.31 ERA

No doubt he’ll shut down our lineup :)

by 40AS on Mar 7, 2010 11:44 AM CST reply actions

Loy fails to bump

Then flies out to right. Pretty poor at bat there

by 40AS on Mar 7, 2010 11:46 AM CST reply actions

Rupp up

Flies out to 1B

Keyes singles in Etier, should be 3-2 if Loy had gotten the bunt down but I’ll take 3-1

Groundout ends the inning

by 40AS on Mar 7, 2010 12:58 PM CST reply actions

Groundout to Etier, double down the left field line

Getting close to Ruffin time?

by 40AS on Mar 7, 2010 1:03 PM CST reply actions
