OK, their colors are actually Crimson and Cream, but if they want to call their spring game the Red and White game who are we to complain or throw stones? After all, despite having one of the top business schools in the country (yes, my undergrad degree is a BBA in Marketing) , the Longhorn Football Administrative Gurus keep telling us our spring game teams are actually named "Texas" and "Fight," and (rightfully so) we continue to ignore them and go back to Orange and White.
That said, the lead up to the OU spring game today was actually interesting. They drafted their teams which sounded like a lot of fun. They assigned the lead seniors to a team-red or white- and assigned them each a coach, and then let them draft the rest of the team. This lead to some interesting draft choices. It sounds like a lot of fun and perhaps we should try this out.
The top RB "drafted"--an unkown walk-on named Dominique Whaley-who was taken ahead of elite recruit Jermie Calhoun. And, Whaley didn't disappoint in the game since he was actually the leading rusher! It seems unlikely that he will jump the senior RBs who were limited in play, but he must be decent for the team and coaches to put him ahead of Calhoun. Stoops said that he was the mvp in a recent spring scrimmage.
Another intesting stat--LOTS of dropped passes. The OU receivers continue to struggle. But, as I suspected, WR Kenny Stills from CA is going to be a star for them. We are going to have to watch him closely.
Justin Chaisson, apparently he has lost a lot of weight (hmmmm...wonder why) and I read that he is undersized as a DT and needs to get back up on wieht. DT McFarland was not highly taken and recorded only a few tackles. (Yes, I will never be a fan. If he ends up in the NFL and God forbid, the Texans, I will ... ) anyway.
I think it is a good idea to keep an eye on our enemy at all time....and sometimes we can learn something. The "draft" idea was actually cool--so props to them on that. The rest of their game, OL Good went down with a high ankle sprain, McFarland was pancaked a few times, Sounds like they are decent but not going to be huge threat this year.
