Findlay Prep Vs. Mountain State NHSI Open Thread
[Update: Findlay Prep easily takes down Mountain State, 68-53, with 32 points from Cory Joseph and some late production from Tristan Thompson, who struggled for most of the game. Findlay will take on Montverde Academy Saturday at 12:30 on ESPN. --GoBR--]
Yesterday, lead by 16 points and nine rebounds by 2010 Texas commit Tristan Thompson and 12 points, five rebounds, and five assists from Texas target Cory Joseph, the Findlay Prep Pilots defeated Charlotte Christian in the opening round of the ESPN Rise National High School Invitational, 65-60. Today, the Pilots take on Mountain State of West Virginia, victors over high school powerhouse Oak Hill at 1 pm CT on ESPN. If Findlay wins today, they will face Montverde Academy, winners over Winter Park in an overtime match up that finished just minutes ago.
Of course, Thompson and Joseph are the players to watch in this game, but keep an eye as well on Nick Johnson, a highly-recruited 2011 guard who has helped replace some of the scoring lost when Avery Bradley graduated last year. And even though he probably won't play a lot, watch out for 2012 wing Winston Shepard, a Texas target who just transferred to Findlay this season.

Cuople bad passes in the first quarter by Thompson
Trying to bad a little too much happen. Like the fact that he’s looking for his teammates, but his decision-making could use a little bit of improvement right now. Just made another pass, this one a good decision — a wraparound to an open teammate, fumbled out of bounds. He also seems to have a little trouble elevating in traffic — he either struggles with leaping explosively or doesn’t trust his ability to do so.
Now in foul trouble, picking up two in the first quarter. The first was a reach-in foul on the perimeter playing a ball screen and trying to get a steal, then in transition was out of control and picked up a charging foul. If he’s going to handle the ball away from the basket in college, he’s going to have to work on his body control.

Joseph doesn't have the best quickness in the world
but he has a feel for the game kind of like Deron Williams with his ability to cross a player over, change speeds, and look smooth while doing it. Haven’t seen a lot of the jumpshot so far, but he shoots with great arc and gives himself a wide margin for error because of it — he doesn’t have to be in perfect rhythm to be able to hit shots.

I assume you mean Thompson
He’s a forward. I think he has trouble establishing position against anyone his size or bigger, but he can take those guys off the dribble by facing them up. I think if someone tried to put a small power forward or wing player on him he could post them up. Not a wing because he’s not going to hurt you much with his jumper from 15 feet out or so. Most of his field goals come around the basket or in the mid range.

Hmmm...
Thompson has been ordinary in my few viewings of him thus far. Sure hope we can get Joseph.
