It would be a major upset for Reed to end up anywhere other than Austin, but watch out for the Aggies. --GoBR--

Per Gerry Hamilton, Cleveland DE Cedric Reed will announce his college destination on Friday around noon. He is reportedly down to Texas, LSU, and A&M.

Gerry also reports that Texas currently holds the edge in his recruitment.

Fingers crossed

I think the early commit is a good sign for us since he could wait awhile and still have an offer open at LSU or A&M.

It was just a joke, lighten up…

by GoHornsGo90 on Apr 21, 2010 8:40 PM CDT reply actions

Eh, I think he just mistaked the players

He would have said ‘hopefully he commits for more than 24 hrs’ as a joke. With ‘this time’ added to it he insinuates Reed has done this before. Just a mistake

Either way here’s to hoping he bleeds orange Friday! Hook’em!

Yep, go them mixed up. My Mistake.

Any chance this guy is interested in playing TE also?

by cj43 on Apr 22, 2010 8:30 AM CDT up reply actions

I suppose it's possible

But much more likely he spins down to DT then switches to TE if he moves at all

Gimme.

I'd be surprised if he announced anywhere other than us

but aggie does make me a bit nervous with Reed.

agree

my hope is that cedric is very committed to wrecking shop for boom and that his folks have warmed up to the idea after visiting.

Playing time

Horns are a little deep at DE at the moment. I’m sure that has played into his decision. Cant really blame him if he goes elsewhere. Not many Programs in the Country are as talent stacked at DE as the Horns are. That being said, I hope he is Burt Orange by Friday!

by OUSUX on Apr 22, 2010 8:56 AM CDT reply actions

not really that much a factor

i suspect we see him as a superb sacho kind of guy, capable of sliding back and forth between inside and outside as the situation warrants. he fits a niche that is a need. hence the strong push from day one to get him.

The reality

If he signs we will prolly have top class in the country, and if he doesn’t sign we will prolly have the top class in the country. My guess is that if he is a true baller he will wind up in Burnt Orange. If he isn’t a baller – he will prolly select Aggie.

C. Reed

Reed said he doesn’t mind some competition. So hopefully this means he’s leaning towards Texas. I agree seems like it could go either way, i feel like he really liked his visits to to tamu, but hopefully friday he’s a Horn!

If Reed were to commit,

he’d be the only DE (barring position change) in his class.

Typically, the playing rotation totals 5: two starters, two second-teamers, and one additional player trained to be ready in case of injury.

By the time Reed is on campus, EJones and SAcho will be gone. The 2011 DE rotation figures to have Okafor and either Jeffcoat or Reggie Wilson starting with Jeffcoat/Wilson, Mims and Daniels/Reed as the rotation. Logically, Reed would be redshirted in ‘11, but Mack has said if a player doesn’t want to redshirt, the coaches won’t force it.

Join the party, Cedric.

Even with the departures

I have to think his decision is being weighed by at least seeing time as a freshman and starting early on in his career. I am not saying he is scared of competition at all, any top player going to a top program should expect to have their eyes opened. Let’s not ignore the fact that playing time and the depth chart plays heavily into these decisions and is most likely the reason he wanted to look around. There is room and I say Gimme Gimme, but we have to be realistic.

by OUSUX on Apr 22, 2010 12:27 PM CDT reply actions

a&m a factor

I’ve heard his Dad favors a&m and a solid chance that’s the direction he will go. hope this isn’ t the case. we need to recruit top DE’s every year. Tough to figure out why a top player would pick a&M over Mack, Boom and the good guys, so maybe he won’t.

by stilltrying on Apr 22, 2010 12:44 PM CDT reply actions

Two words: playing time

They all say they aren’t afraid of competition, but the ultra competitive guys still want to play ASAP, and some of them just can’t accept redshirting. I know our coaches don’t force a redshirt on anyone, but they do suggest it when they feel it would be better for a certain player to sit a year out. And oftentimes, the suggestion alone is enough to “scare off” a player who wants to get on the field right away and thinks he can contribute right away in another program.

I saw the quote mentioned above where Reed said he wasn’t afraid of competition, but he prefaced it with how much he trusts the A&M coaching staff and how the depth charts at each school will be a factor in his decision. To me, it sounded like he prefers A&M, and he was making a preemptive strike against anyone who might accuse him of being afraid to compete for a spot at Texas.

aTm?

I had the same thought when I heard what he said. Sounds like aTm to me.

Let's play hypotheticals...

If Reed doesn’t pick the good guys…..do we go after another DE or you think we call back the Vaughters/Walls/Hakeem type and tell them we have a schollie for them now if they want it?

Perhaps a Nathan Hughes sighting? nt whills

That was the DE I was thinking of if we stay that route

Not seeing Rasco as likely so he would be next in line. I know that would be a dream come true for him

I think Hughes provides similar flexibility

when it comes to sliding inside as well.

Does anyone have a good free video link on him?

I could only find one and it was not impressive imo. He seems highly rated so I don’t know what I am missing.

86, you've hit on one of my biggest gripes of the modern college football reporting

were you around to enjoy the work of that guy who put out the ‘recruits in review’ tapes? i don’t think i’ve yet seen anybody do as good a job as he did in presenting kids in just a half-dozen or so plays and give as good an overall picture of the kid.

take that youtube of malcolm brown highlights. great looking kid and the chosen plays show his speed, agility, and stamina, but more than anything else, it shows a great offensive line that gives him a lot to work with. i’m sure there were times when the going was tough, but those plays don’t show up. there are so many highlight plays for malcolm that a big youtube (8+ minutes) can show play after play of great results, but after three or four plays, really, you are seeing the same thing over and over.

i remember particularly the ‘recruits in review’ presentation of applewhite’s class. all the talk was a cali qb and major was snagged from the ags as insurance. but several of the plays the guy chose to show on major were broken plays where major made something happen. a lot like we are accustomed to with colt. after several viewings, i was really high on major. some months later, i had cause to speak with the rir guy, and i mentioned the footage on applewhite. he laughed and said major was his favorite guy on that year’s tape.

mostly youtubes are intended to impress, not educate. and mostly the rivals, etc, tapes are intended to satisfy a requirement to present some footage.

all that said, i think we can look at what is available and get an inkling, but that’s about all.

video clips

I started my recruiting obsession with the 2009 class so I missed that. But, I do remember watching a great video clip by Coach Brown in which he prestented each kid that we signed for 2009 and he showed their video footage and discussed why they liked the kid and what their take was for the kid’s potential. I don’t recall seeing that this year for the 2010 kids.

I also remember watching the video clips of M. Goodwin and watching him make some incredible catches. I didn’t know much about recruiting etc, but I thought he looked amazing and I was surprised that he wasn’t given his full value as a football recruit with great hands because he was a track star.

Wathcing the video I saw on Reed last night I couldn’t tell which player he was. I was looking at the DE, then the guy got pancaked and I started to wonder if Reed was the TE on the play. It was a blurry, poor quality video and I didn’t see anything special about it but I couldn’t tell anything from the clip. All the experts say that he could play TE also because of his athleticism which is also displayed in his basketball skills.

Mack's 2010 signing class breakdown

The video is over an hour, starts with Mack’s general comments, then video clips of each player, then Q&A with reporters.

i’ve seen some tapes like that. yuck. a waste of time.

a move to tight end isn’t out of the question, but it’s not likely. this effort seems to be headed up by coach blood, and i wouldn’t want to be the guy having to explain that he’s losing him to the offense.

i remember an incoming linebacker one year who displayed amazing hands. next we heard he was a wide receiver. perhaps you remember kwame cavil.

regarding goodwin, i had no idea he was so good. huge surprise for me. i’m sure the coaches had an inkling, but i think they half expected he wouldn’t go out for football because of his track prowess. i think it was a surprise to them that he was blood-in-the-eye serious about the game.

my post was in response to the video clip wrang said he saw.

Goodwin's videos

Showed him making tough catches over his shoulder on long deep balls. He of course had outrun the defenders. I was impressed with the difficulty of the catch and his eyes/hand coordination to find the ball that deep.

Also, when he originally got the track schollie I remember that he made a comment that he was a football player that ran track—not a track guy that also played football. I liked that comment. Coach Brown also had an interesting comment on Goodwin after the first few games—he pointed out that Marquis was incredibly mature because of his world travels in track competitions. He said some young guys come on campus and have never been on an airplane, Marquis has traveled all over and competed in packed stadiums with lots of events going on so he knows how to focus.

you were up on me

i don’t think i had seen any footage on marquise prior to his arrival on campus. so it was a huge surprise to me. good call on your part.

Where is Beergut?

Does he think Reed is going to Aggieland or the promised land?

If we don’t get Reed I would like to see us giving Hughes the offer. I’m still rooting for Hughes.

by Wrangler86 on Apr 22, 2010 4:40 PM CDT reply actions

Wonder if Hughes would be receptive.

My gut feeling is that since he has been a lifelong Texas fan, he would be, but I think it might be more difficult than expected given how crushing it must have been for him to come to the first Junior Day thinking he was going to leave a Longhorn and then never get his offer.

I’m far from sold on Hughes as a player, but the people who are giving out scholarships really seem to like him, as he has a ton of offers.

I believe miketag is covering recruiting for the Ags, surprised he hasn’t been around besides to comment in the Lone Star Showdown thread.

I suspect it's Reed or bust

at DE . . . that might change if somebody had a big senior season and the coaches found him six months from now (like Mims) . . .

With the LBer commits for 2011, and three frosh DEs just about to enter school, I don’t think getting a defensive end for this class is vital. I do, however, like to cover all positional areas with every class.

LSU allegedly has Hughes rated higher than Cedric Reed

With bated breath I wait on Cedric Reed’s decision. Texas, aggie and Gooner hats on the table at his annoucement ceremony. I think Texas should offer Hughes if Reed doesn’t commit today. Hopefully this will be a moot argument in 15 minutes
