Around SBN: Full Coverage of 2012 Coke 600

The article is In$ider, but I'll share a snippet I found particularly interesting (emphasis below is the money quote--suck it, Horn Brain). Mack is talking about when he'll retire.

"Bill [Snyder] obviously missed it tremendously. You take a guy like a Barry Alvarez. He has made a smooth transition to being an athletic director. Rich Brooks is 69. Mike Bellotti is more my age. I'm 58. Coaches are great resources. I talk to Lloyd Carr all the time. He says to make sure that you coach as long as you want to, and that you don't quit early because it's never the same after you quit. I feel like I've gotten great advice.

We've lost two games in two years. We had a tremendous recruiting class this year and it looks like we're going to have one next year. Things are so positive in this program right now. Will and I, unlike some coach-in-waiting situations, get along great. Will is young. He doesn't have to be a coach next year or the next year after that at Texas. He loves being the defensive coordinator and we're paying him like a head coach. We feel like we're in great shape.

People have asked me if I've sat down and talked to Will or (AD) DeLoss (Dodds) or (UT president) Bill Powers or (wife) Sally about the day that I'm gonna quit. I really have not. I know people think that can't be possible. I haven't because I really feel if I start talking about it, it's not fair to the kids or me. I don't want to plan retirement and not do a good job coaching. I think what I will do is continue to coach until the day I feel like it's time for a change for everybody, and then I'll walk in and tell DeLoss and Bill Powers, it's time. But there is no timetable."

It's almost too good to be true

If we keep this coaching situation as it is, I’m looking for USC-style domination of the Big 12. The pipeline of money, talent, and wins that’s going through Texas right now is unbelievable.

Yes but

the question, even though assured by Mack, is how long will Muschamp truly stay/wait?

There’s something to be said for not having the stress and responsibility of being a head coach. Some people are perfectly happy making nearly a million dollars a year.

Domination of the Big 12

Texas was kind of turned on its head a little by OU for a while there, but I think Mack and Co. have come up with a formula that works at the national and conference levels, in recruiting, on the field, and off the field. And unlike USC, FSU in the 1990s, etc. they’re taking the high road to that result. I couldn’t be happier.

I think a lot of people are probably dissatisfied with Greg Davis, the running game, and a few other aspects of the program, but really, all of these moving parts are critical elements of arguably the best overall program in the NCAA.

The other, of course, involves orcs.

He passed up a lot of overtures

for some pretty good jobs this past year. I think he stays here. I really am not worried about him leaving.

Georgia is the only school that worries me

I don’t see him leaving for any other job, although a job like Florida might be pretty appealing.

same here

Only the dawgs worry me, but they worry me a LOT because Richt’s seat is already uncomfortably warm. I’ll be seriously rooting for them until the MB-WM transition.

LSU, Florida, Georgia

I would think any of those would be awfully difficult to turn down.

I said Miles was a mediocre hire when LSU grabbed him

And while he did the Frank Solich thing in living off of the foundation Meyer had built, I think Miles has to be on the hot seat pretty soon here. LSU could indeed be a threat, and I think our worst nightmare would be if Muschamp were to go there, continue to tap the usual LSU recruiting pools, and add the considerable recruiting connections he has been building at UT.

As bad as this would be, I still don’t think it happens. I think LSU and UGA are the two most likely places if Muschamp were to leave, but I think both combined are less likely than the probability that Muschamp ascends in Austin.

*er, do you mean Saban instead of Meyer?

Just can’t see Muschamp going to LSU. He’s already turned down more attractive jobs than that. Don’t think he’d want to be in UT’s recruiting shadow. Notre Dame, USC, & Georgia his alma mater. Ryanlionrah’s right: He may be perfectly happy making a million and still getting to concentrate on X’s & O’s.

Dangit

Yes, I did. Sigh…those SEC prettyboys are all the same.

What more attractive jobs did he turn down?

As far as I know, Tennessee is the only major program that looked like it would probably offer, but I wouldn’t consider Tenn more attractive than LSU these days.

I guess nothing is as attractive as UT & Austin but . . .

. . . have you ever been to Baton Rouge? I’ve been to both & Tennessee is a much nicer place to be. Plus, isn’t wasn’t necessarily that long ago that Tennessee was a better program than LSU’s. I guess the only thing, IMO, that would make LSU a better place would be the recruiting in Louisiana & Texas would be better than Tennessee.

I mispoke. When I said “turned down”, I meant that he probably mentally refused them, nothing officially said. Besides officially being up for the Tennessee job, you know that, had he wanted it, he probably could have picked up the phone & been the front-runner for USC & Notre Dame. That’s all I meant.

I actually think BR is nice

But I haven’t been to Knoxville. But still, Honolulu is a lot nicer than either, but you don’t see coaches flocking there. Tennessee’s a big-time program, but not on the same tier as LSU. Recruiting there is a lot harder.

Well, both have their good & bad points.

2,500 miles-off-the-mainland Honolulu doesn’t quite apply to this discussion but location is still a factor of interest for a coach & his family. Think more like Florida vs. Iowa. Had Lane Kiffin stayed in place, you’d see my point in a year or two, as Miles takes LSU back to pre-Saban days. Like I originally said, recruiting area is slightly better in Louisiana & East Texas but Tennessee is still in the same tier as LSU, just below UT, ND, USC, UF, et al. Just my opinion.

Richt's seat is already uncomfortably warm?

Are you kidding me? The club of HCs to post 70 wins in their first 7 seasons of HC’ing has only 9 members. Mark Richt is one of them and Mack is not.

In the past decade, Georgia finished lower than their opening rank five times and higher than their opening ranking five times. They had 4 Top-10 finishes in the decade and finished unranked just once.

In the past decade Georgia had 98 victories. Only 8 teams in the nation posted more victories in that span — Boise State with 112, UT and OU with 110, Ohio State and USC with 102, Florida with 100 and LSU and Virginia Tech with 99.

‘That kind of work doesn’t get anyone fired!

The Mack critic appears again

Richt also took over at UGA, whereas Mack took over at Tulane. Huge difference, and you’re either forgetting that difference or being disingenuous. I have my guess.

Georgia is doing okay, but the fans probably expect a lot more out of them. I’ve heard a lot of discontent with Richt, much more than I have from Texas fans about your favorite target.

Oh please.....

….. try not to whine so much. Heck, Mack only had 54 victories in his first 7 seasons at N.Carolina. That, after 4 previous years as a HC. Try sticking to the facts. Such as only 8 teams in Div.1 have more victories in the past 10 seasons. Georgia isn’t going to get rid of Mark Richt.

The quality of the candidate usually matches up with the quality of the program. Other members of the 70 wins in their first 7 seasons as a Div.1 HC – Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops, Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer. With 49 W’s in 4 seasons, Chris Petersen is on his way to membership.

As usual....

…. you missed the part where I pointed out Texas has more victories than Georgia over the past decade. No real surprise for a shadow poster.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news.....

“If we keep this coaching situation as it is, I’m looking for USC-style domination of the Big 12” In order for Texas to have a USC type of domination, it will first have to be from 2010 through 2020 because Texas surely DID NOT dominate the Big 12 from 2000-2010. OU won more head to head victories, more conference championships, and more Heisman trophies. UT has the edge with two more bowl game victories, but nothing else. Not to mention, the three conference championships in a row. Me personally, I think once Georgia makes a call to Muschamp, he’s gone. And I don’t see why some of you are discrediting Stoops and Co. Stoops and Co. are not to be underestimated. One thing I look forward to is this year’s RRS. There is no more scrambling QB for UT. Last time UT didn’t have a scrambling QB, 0-4. BOOMER!

He has the ability to be a pure pocket passer, but the kid has certainly shown the ability to get moving.

VY 1-1 as a starter against OU

and was also a part of the 12-65 debacle. So obviously having a running qb is not all it takes to beat OU.
